I am interested in information about the community of Monessen. If any one can help or lead me in the right direction I would be grateful. early history of the land and its inhabitants: Native peoples, geology, etc. early family settlers: Manown, McMahon, Miller, Luce, McGowan, Cook, Neil, Mathews, Reeves, Neil. Any family stories about Monessen through the years. Thanks, Cassandra Vivian

The following info was sent to me by others on this list, which I recived with deep gratitufe and now share with other inquirers. [my apologies for not recording the original presenters] Cora -------------------- In 1900, Hope Church (Mifflin Twp, Allegheny Co) had a railroad station, a telegraph station, an express office, and a post office. Population: 1,000 according to Bradstreet's Commercial Reports. Hope Church was in Mifflin Township near Lincoln Place. Hope Church was at the bottom of Mifflin Road and Lebanon Road (Rte 885 N) and was adjacent to Hays P.O. and ran along Streets Run Road near the Pgh and Virginia Railroad tracks. The majority of the property was a plan of homes owned by I.D. Risher. This may be the same person that owned Risher Coal. Risher married into the John Hays family (they started the coal mines in Hays). John Hope and William Hope had coal mines in the northwest corner of Mifflin Township in 1876. On the 1876 Allegheny County Map there is a Hope Church in the NW corner of Mifflin Township. It looks like it would be situated where Lincoln Place is now - close to the Munhall border line. About where West Run Road and Main Street and Interboro Avenues meet. In 1876, Gill Hall P.O. was in Jefferson Township nearer to Snowden Twp.
Sorry about the previous email from me, it was sent to the list by mistake. Wendy

Thanks to all who answered my last request for information sometime ago. I am hoping some new viewer might see this and could tell me what happened to HUGH A DUMMETT (Dummit...etc who was born in Washington Co. Pa in 1813. He married Nancy Cox, daughter of ENOCH COX and MARY RARICK, also from Pa. She was born in 1817. I need to know where HE came from, and who were his children and parents. They later moved to LaSalle Co. Ill. I'm not real sure if he came with his wife and children or not. He was my GGGrandfather. I know he had children, but not how many. Thanks for ANY help. Subject: Searching for Leibrook, Salisbury, Ramsey Hi All, I am new to this list. I am searching for Leibrook ancestors who came from Germany. Mary Leibrook, b @1825, Francis B @ 1824 and Catherine b @ 1825 were siblings - all born in Germany. Their parents were Henry Leibrook and Mary Eve Ginder, as noted on Francis' marriage record. The siblings married and settled in New Orleans as I found Catherine's marriage record from 1836, but I can't find anything earlier. Mary Leibrook m. Issac Ramsey (from PA) in New Orleans in 1841; and then married William Salisbury from VA @ 1842-43. Since Issac Ramsey was from PA, I am wondering if the Leibrooks might have also come from PA. Issac Ramsey died in West Goshen, Cheste County, PA, 1842. If anyone has a connection to the Leibrook's, Salisbury's or Ramsey's, I would like to share and exchange information. Any ideas about the Leibrook name would be appreciated. I don't find many in New Orleans. Thanks and appreciation. Rose
Hi, Some one on the list was asking about early Funeral Homes in Belle Vernon, PA. In my 2nd. G Grandfather George W. Rose's (1823-1905) Civil War File, "C. Reppert and Son's" of Belle Vernon handled the funeral arrangements. He is buried in the Belle Vernon Cemetery. The file (70 pages) contains many local names. Marge

Not many readable ones here, but all you need is one --- if it's the right one! Felgar Road Cemetery Directions: Take Route 31E towards Somerset. Where Routes 31E and 381N intersect go approximately 7/10 mile, turn left on 381N towards Kregar; 381N will cross 130, go approximately 4 miles to Felgar Road. You will see the Pennsylvania Turnpike on the right. Mailboxes in this area list their address as Stahlstown (Westmoreland County). Bear to the right on a small gravel road. The cemetery is on state game lands (Forbes State Forest). Do not attempt to visit this cemetery in the winter to spring. Road is only passable with a 4-wheel drive vehicle. http://www.rootsweb.com/~pabtcdar/felgar.html Cora PS: Can anyone tell me who Stahlstown was named after?

I found these folks near the family of Thomas Courtright & Mary Scott in Green Co.,PA 1860. first has anyone proven the parents of Thomas to actually be Jacob Cortright & Anna Quick? Thomas lived just across the river in PA from my John in OH, they both moved to PA/OH the same time. No other Cortrights around Thomas & no other Cortrights around my John. My working theory is that the parents of my John were John Cortright & Susanna Kittel. Thanks, Cindy Descendants of Silas Kittel 1 Silas Kittel b: 1817 MD .. +Susan b: 1817 VA 2 S.E. I know that the recording of deaths was required by PA as of Jan. 1, 1906, and have obtained several Death Certificates from New Castle for people who died early in 1906. Has anyone ever experienced instances where New Castle has misfiled a Death Certificate? Does anyone on the list know who the undertakers or embalmers were who would have service the deceased of Belle Vernon? We do not know whether Nathaniel was at a funeral home or whether he was laid out at home. Thanks to a very helpful person on this list I have identified that two of my ancestor families lived in Gill Hall at the time of the 1870 Census. This is the first time I have heard Gill Hall as a place where they lived and have no background on the town during that period. Can someone fill me in? Also, they are listed as living in dwellings # 614 and # 636. Is it possible to find out the street addresses of these dwellings? Jeff Haberman
