    1. [PAMONVAL] PAMONVAL Roll Call
    2. Esther Nixon
    3. Hello Listmates, My name is Esther Nixon. I live in Uniontown, PA I have been researching my LEWIS family for a long time. I found my ancestor William LEWIS in the 1850 Census married to Margaret SUTTON. They were living in Belle Vernon. He had several children. The Oldest Child was Arthur Palmer Lewis aged 19. This was my Gr. Grandfather. The next son was Ephriam LEWIS, aged 17. BOTH of these men were in the Civil War. I believe some of the other brothers were also in the War. I can find no record of the Death of Arthur Palmer LEWIS. There is information on BURTON LEWIS, supposedly the father of WILLIAM. Of this I am not certain. I would like to find other descendants of William. I would like any information I can find about them. They were in the Glass Industry. Arthur & Ephriam were involved in starting IOOF Lodges. They were members of The Methodist Church. I find them on the Belle Vernon Tax Roles . Someone else introduced themselves as living in the Chicago area. I was Born in Chicago in 1917. That was where the Lewis family was living at the time. My Father & Mother came to Fayette County, which was the Home of my mother . After Graduating from High School, I returned to Chicago, in 1936 where I spent my young adult years. Again with my Grandmother Lewis. My research must be done via the computer, because, I do NOT drive. This makes it very difficult. I am mainly interested in Dates of Death and where my ancestors were buried. ALL family records held by MY branch of the family have been destroyed. I am hoping to complete my search soon , so that I can pass it on to my children. Esther ===== Esther L. 2. Eva Dayle Zippay
    3. Hi everyone, My name is Eva Dayle Zippay and I've lived in Tallahassee Florida for the past 20 years. I was born in Charleroi (Charleroi-Monessen Hospital to be exact), graduated from CAHS, then moved all the way to Pittsburgh to go to nursing school. (My first nursing job as an R.N. was at Charleroi-Monessen Hospital, as a matter of fact.) We lived in the Mon Valley area until 1973 when we moved to Wheeling, W.Va.--but I could still see a river daily :) Then, as I said, we moved to Florida in 1980--no rivers :( I took early, early, early retirement from nursing (Obstetrics) nearly 3 years ago, and now I stay busy by keeping 2 grandchildren--14 months and 17 1/2 months--during the day while their parents work. (Good thing I quit working!) That doesn't give me as much time as I would like to work on genealogy, and most of my postings are done late at night when I am very tired, so excuse the obvious mistakes, please. I'm so happy that Mike has started this list, as I had begun thinking recently that there was a real need for it. It just seems that the people who settled on the river were "different" somehow. In my family they settled on the river at about 1810--maybe earlier--and didn't move away. Some of my line are still there. I guess you can say I'm a real "Valley Girl"--excuse the bad joke, I couldn't resist. The main lines I'm researching are Hamilton, Hagerty, Cope, Parker, Conaway, Gardner, Geho, Gamble/Gamielle, Call, Minor, Sisley, Kobala, Deeb, and Nedrash. I also have an interest in Crow, McCormick, Hall, Shepherd, Foster, Furlong, Spengler, Zippay, Thiry, and Flesch. I hope this list takes off and flies! I have lots to post also--just waiting for some directions from Mike about posting to the rootsweb site as well as to the list. Nice to meet you all. 2. Marjorie Smallwood
    3. Mark - don't believe we have been in touch before, but your listing of Hildebrand especially caught my eye. I have spousal connections to Crago and Swan and direct to Thomas. My Thomas line is from Eli and Sarah Knight Thomas s/o John, s/o Ellis of Frederick Co., VA, My Hildebrands are probably descended from Henry b. 1758 to Henry b. 1778 to Lewis Lantz Hildebrand b. 1816. Lewis' son John Marshall was (from his obit): MEMBER OF PROMINENT FAMILY. Squire Hildebrand was a direct descendant of Henry Hildebrand, who came to America from Germany and settled in Massachusetts in colonial days. His parents were Louis Launtz Hildebrand and Maria Catherine Matheney [sic] of Greene county, PA. A few years after their marriage they moved to Clinton district, this county, [Monongalia]John M. Hildebrand being a boy two years old at that time and one of a family of twelve children. One of those twelve children was Margaret who married John Henry Smallwood and who lived on the Tygart Valley River a short distance from where it joins the Monongahala. John Henry was my ggrandfather. Early in life Squire Hildebrand established a small store at the place which now bears his family name. Hope we can connect with these Hildebrands. They have been very illusive. I have most all of their descendants. 3. Hello Mike and All, Thank you for starting this list! Though much info may be repeated on other lists I think this a little more specific list and something I am looking forward to. My name is Mark Dodd I lived all my life in the Mon Valley. I graduated from Elizabeth Forward High School and currently and probably forever live in Elizabeth. I guess you can say I'm following family tradition. My families showed up in the Mon Valley in late 1700's and early 1800's. Yes, many of their descendents have moved on but all my direct lines stayed and they stayed mostly on the banks of the MON. Here are a few of my surnames: HUGHS, LUCAS, O'NEIL,SHARPNACK,CRAGO, COOPER, MCCRORY, MCFEE, MILLER, HILDEBRAND, BROWN, THOMPSON, KEARNS, THOMAS, WINTERS, MCCLAIN, SWAN, DOUGHTY, COPELAND, PARKISON, MEANS, MITCHELL. Those are the ones that were mostly around the Mon Valley. Mostly all my others were in the "Yough Valley". Some of my other hobbies besides genealogy are local history (of the mon valley and Elizabeth and Forward twps) and I collect anything dealing with riverboats..mostly pictures. Thanks and Happy Hunting! ~critically addicted to genealogy~ Mark Dodd Elizabeth, PA

    3. My name is Marjorie Smallwood and I live in the Arkansas Ozarks. Nearly every one of my ancestors have lived in the area along the Monongahala River at one time or another from abt. 1750 to hopefully the present. In PA, predominately in Center twp. Greene Co. the direct surnames are Stewart, Knight, Huffman, Smith, Manning, Thomas, Tuttle, Strope, Sturges, Kinnan; in Washington Co. Sharp, Woolverton, Petit, in very early times Bonnett & Baker, in Monongalia Co & Marion Co., WV Matheny, Wright Hartley, Hanks, Vincent, Smallwood & Hildebrand. And collaterally many many others. I've probably left off some. I hope I haven't overextended the definition of the river valley. I have never been to the area, except WV, so am unfamiliar with the geography. Hope to hear from you and have over 8,000 individuals in my data base to share. Marjorie

    2. Hi, My name is Mary Jane (Stephens) Hennon. I live in Brentwood, Missouri which is a suburb of St. Louis. My main lines are STEPHENS (father)and ELLIS (mother). On the ELLIS side the patriarch in this area of Pennsylvania is ELLIS ELLIS who lived in the Redstone Old Fort area in the mid 1700's and later moved to Catfish Camp (Washington) in Washington County around 1775. Other lines connected to the ELLIS family include CURTIS, DOWNING, LEET, CLARK and GREEN. These folks eventually moved on to Ohio and Kentucky. I am also not familiar with the geography of Pennsylvania. Have been reading some of Allen Eckert's books about the frontiersmen and their battles with the Indians. I am also a senior citizen and hooked on genealogy. Right now though I have to rake those leaves. Mary Jane

    2. My name is Sally (Fisher) Chenier. I was born in South Strabane Township, Washington County, PA. Moved to Avalon, Pgh. PA when I was 6 and went to school in Avalon and graduated from Avalon High School. I married Raymond Clair from West View in 1952 and went to Salzburg, Austria with him while he was in the Army. We then settled in Wexford, then Bellevue and finally Allison Park before moving to Anaheim, California in 1958. I have been researching my family mostly online but have heckled family off and on for years for information and even that was given sparsely. My father's family was from Washington, PA and my mother's from Allegheny City and then the North boroughs. I now live in Chino, California so that is almost as far as Seattle. Far enough to make it just a bit more difficult as I would love to be doing some of this personally. Names that I am researching are: FISHER, BROWN, FOSTER, BALDWIN, SMITH, CLARK, WEIBLEN, HERLING, CLAIR, HEYL with names to be added as necessary. Sally Chenier [email protected] Chino, CA 91710

    2. Hello Listmates, When I started this list I didn't know quite what to expect in the way of number of subscibers. I'm happy to say that for the first day, I underestimated your response!! I've noticed some very familiar names on the list, and if anyone is concerned with the amount of help to expect with their research, rest assured that this list looks like a who's - who of Southwestern Pennsylvania researchers. I've also noticed quite a few folks that are new to me (and there may be a possible cousin or two out there). Now it's time to introduce our selves to others on the list. I suggest that each of you to drop a note about yourselves and/or the folks your are researching. I'll go first (actually second, Rosalie Carroll beat me to the punch! :-) My name is Mike Donaldson. I grew up in Belle Vernon (Lynnwood) and graduated from BVA High School. With the exception of about 4 years, I've lived in the Mon-Valley all of my life. I started researching using the internet and the Rootsweb mailing lists about two years ago, while living in Buffalo, NY. As I found out from my isolation in up-state New York, distance is no problem, when using the tools that are available online. ( As far as I can tell so far, this list has members who live in 6 states, the most distant being in Seattle, Washington). Of course, theres no place like home, and I now live back here in the Valley, in Allenport, less than a mile from my ancestors farm that was settled in the 1820's! Names that I am researching are: DONALDSON, BIENEMAN, DALE, BEVAN, STEPHENS, CROW, SWANEY, McCANN, SHANNON, BEAZELL, FURNIER, KREPPS, HIGGINS, HUGGINS, PARKS. On my wifes side of the family: McKEE, KOSTELAC, CONAWAY, HILL, JENKINS. My website (see URL below) includes about 4,700 individuals, and about 975 surnames. It gets updated about once a month! 1. [PAMONVAL] Welcome
    2. Hello... and thanks for becoming one of the Charter members of the PAMONVAL List!! This may take a day or two to get fired up! I am changing the Welcome message that you recieve when subscribing to the list, that will ask for new members to list their Mon Valley Surnames when they first join. The first round of invitations went to folks who I know where interested in the area, and who may know each other already. However, in the next couple of days, we should be joined by some new folks, as I've gotten the OK to post messages on other lists to alert them to our list. Keep an eye out for new cousins!! I have a large number of newspaper clippings that include obituaries, wedding announcements, birth notices, and other stories. It is my intent to begin posting these on the list, and encorage you to do the same, as time permits. Members will be reminded how they can search our archives, so something posted today can be found a year from now. Also, in the not too distant future, there will be a website for the Mon Valley researchers. (Give me a month or so til my head stops spinning!) I'll be asking for info to be included (gedcoms, pictures, links, etc.) so be on the lookout for that announcement. Thats all I have for now... I talk to you soon (feel free to talk amongst yourselves! ) Thanks, Mike Donaldson ([email protected]) Allenport, PA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://www.my-ged.com/donldson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Listowner of: Monongahela River Valley of Penna Rootsweb mailing list: [email protected]
