    1. Re: [PAMONVAL] Soundex - (and a great Link!)
    2. Hi List.... I found a great site that explains what Soundex is, and also has a "Soundex Machine" which quickly gives you the Soundex code for any surname. To explain the meaning of Soundex, this is what it says on the site. The URL of this page is: http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/soundex/soundex.html "The Soundex is a coded last name (surname) index based on the way a name sounds rather than the way it is spelled. Surnames that sound the same, but are spelled differently, like SMITH and SMYTH, have the same code and are filed together. The Soundex coding system was developed so that you can find a surname even though it may have been recorded under various spellings. Knowing a surname's Soundex code is an important first step in research using NARA's census microfilm holdings (1880-1920)". One draw back to Soundex, is if you don't know the first letter of a name (ie. Costella vs. Kostella) , but that would only happen in a small percentage of names. Hope this helps Thanks, Mike Donaldson ([email protected]) Allenport, PA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://www.my-ged.com/donldson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Listowner of: Monongahela River Valley of Penna Rootsweb mailing list: [email protected]

    2. In a message dated 99-11-10 07:12:55 EST, Peg Duffy write: << Because of the various forms through which all of us receive these messages, please include your email address with your signature at the end of a post. Otherwise we end up sending to the entire list what would be more appropriate as a reply to the just the original sender. That's what leads to the kind of confusion that muddles some discussions, as others have already noted. >> Thanks Peg...you read my mind. .. And when you reply to the list about an item you found in the digest, be sure to change the Subject Line to a statement about your responce... otherwise, the meesage will be titled something like "Re: pamonval-D Digest #000" and readers will have no idea what the post is about. 1. [PAMONVAL] Obituaries, Death notices, Birth announcements, & pneumonia
    2. Eva Dayle Zippay
    3. Good evening again, I'm going to post to this list a few obituaries and death notices that I posted to the Fayette and Washington Co. lists so they can be attached to the site. So--for some of you this won't be new. Mike, do you want me to repost the "Bundles from Heaven" and the Daily Register of the hospital to attach to the site, also? How about the news from the service men. Let me know if and what you want me to do with that. Just a little aside about pneumonia to any of you who may have that listed (as I do) as the cause of death for a family member. While pneumonia did indeed cause people to die before antibiotics, these people usually developed pneumonia because of another ailment, such as a stroke. Health care professionals used to call pneumonia "The old man's friend", because it eased people out of life in a relatively painless manner, as opposed to a long lingering death from cancer or a stroke, or some other debilitating disease. So, the moral of this story is, if you come across pneumonia on a death certificate as a cause of death--suspect something else to be a factor contributing to the development of same.
