    1. [PAMONVAL] Charleroi Methodist Church "Frolic"---1944
    2. Eva Dayle Zippay
    3. >From the Charleroi Mail, Saturday, May 6, 1944, Page 3: "W.F.J. Class of Methodist Church Entertains With Frolic Last Night An evening of fun and unusual entertainment was presented last night by girls of the W.F.J. class of the methodist church, when they held a 'frolic' in the social rooms of the church. Mrs. Dorothy FRIES, teacher of the class, was master of ceremonies, and the program opened with 'gaxoo(sic) band' numbers. The band, under the direction of Gladys MORGAN, composed of Florence CREITZER, Bess FOSTER, Elma ZINSIUS, Viola CARSON, Theda Mae CARSON, Sara HILAIRE, and Betty RUTY. Mrs. Mary SODERHOLM, president of the class, then extended a welcome to the guests, and Mrs. Mary Jane BOOTH sang, 'With the Wind and the Rain In Your Hair,' and 'Three Little Chestnuts.' She was accompanied at the piano by her mother, Mrs. Earl NICHOLSON. A colorful sketch entitled 'Mike and Ike' was presented by Louise COLBORN and Florence CREITZER and as a piano duet, Theda Mae CARSON and Viola CARSON played 'Stars and Stripes Forever.' A midget chorus, composed of twelve of the class members, sang several popular tunes. A pantomime with Gladys MORGAN as reader, was then featured. Those taking part in it were Vesta JOHNSON, Leah REEVES and Theda Mae CARSON. Paul MATTSON, husband of Mrs. Alice MATTSON, a class member, then entertained with a chalk talk and several tricks of magic. The concluding, and one of the most amusing features of the program was a one act comedy, entitled 'Be A Little Cuckoo.' Those taking part were Mildred BICKERTON, Jane COLBORN, Annetta CANTARELL, Bette HAZLETT, and Sally BROWN. After the program home-made cookies and candy were sold by Mrs. Mary SODERHOLM and Mrs. Gertrude HOUGH. General chairman of the affair, assisted by several members of the class, was Mrs. Sara HILAIRE." ===== Eva Dayle Zippay Tallahassee, Florida [email protected] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. >From the Charleroi Mail, Saturday, May 6, 1944, Page 2: "Proposed Two Way Radio May Aid Police Work Uniontown, Pa.----Uniontown police department, faced with a manpower shortage due to the Selective Service Act, may find a partial solution for its problem in the proposed purchase of two-way radio equipment which long has been advocated for greater service to the city. Council, at its meeting this week, authorized Mayor Russell E. UMBEL to advertise for the furnishing of frequency modulated police communication type, two-way radio equipment to be installed at the police station and in the prowl car. At the same time, reading was given an ordinance providing for the appropriation from the current general fund of $2000 to the department of public affairs for meeting cost of the equipment. The department, at the present time, is short three men who now are in military service. Five more are within draft age, with one already having passed the required physical examination. 'All of these men will not be replaced, pending their return from the Armed Forces,' said Mayor UMBEL. 'We may have to temporarily employ several men but these will be above draft age. 'The two way radio equipment may help, at least partially, to solve the manpower shortage. At the same time, such equipment, without doubt, will materially aid in the promptness and efficiency with which the police endeavor to serve the residents of this city.' The mayor explained that some investigation already has been made and that should the equipment be purchased, it will be subject to approval of the War Production Board." ===== Eva Dayle Zippay Tallahassee, Florida [email protected] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. The library here in Seattle has all three volumes as well as the PA archives. Check with your local genealogy libraries. Mine tells me over the phone if a book is there. If nothing else books about Washington County, PA are very likely. What townships are you researching? Sutro library in San Francisco is a gold mine I hear. 3. I have been told before New Eagle PA, Washington County (next to Monongahela PA) there was a town named "Eagle" and then "Old Eagle". This was supposed to be across the river in Forward Township around or near the old Monongah Mine (spelling?). I have also been told it was near Courtney PA (Houston Run). Dave Copenhaver Sr.

    3. Is the Second Ward school and Central School (c.1880's) in Monongahela the same building reference? This would be the school with the semi-gothic architecture and the clock on the steeple. It was located across from the Monongahela post office at 4th and Chess St. Was there another school that burned down in the early 1880's across the street and replaced by this building? 3. I am searching on the MCKNIGHT surname, and another researcher had sent me an obit from the newspaper with the following information: It is a long obituary, but I will shorten it with info needed. EVELYN FRANKS MCKNIGHT, widow of WILLIAM L. MCKNIGHT died on OCTOBER 2, 1999 in Miami, Florida. She was born in CONNELLSVILLE, PA on November 10, 1914. She was the daughter of ARTHUR and BARBARA FRANKS, deceased. Also deceased was her husband WILLIAM MCKNIGHT and a brother CHARLES V. FRANKS. Surviving relatives included cousins LEWIS WANDEL, GARY WANDEL, MILLIE BURNS, KATHY ANSELL, DARLENE SHAW, and JOY SAMPEY who reside in the general vicinity of Connellsville, PA. I am wondering about the WILLIAM MCKNIGHT, if he also is from the CONNELLSVILLE, PA area?? Did anyone happen to know anything on him? OR is any of the surviving relatives of EVELYN that are listed in the CONNELLSVILLE area on this list that would maybe be able to provide some information on the MCKNIGHT.... 1. [PAMONVAL] The (Old) Belle Vernon - Speers Bridge
    2. Another tidbit from the Belle Vernon SesquiCentennial (150th) anniversary Commemorative Book: The Belle Vernon ridge Co. incorporated on Feb 11, 1891. Its stated purpose: "To construct a wagon and foot bridge across the Monongahela River at Belle Vernon". Congress authorized construction in Feb. 1893 Incorporators: S.F. JONES, J.S. JONES, S.C. SPEERS, Charles J. SPEERS, Thomas P GRANT, J.S. VanVOORHIS, J.C. CUNNINGHAM, Issac S. VanVOORHIS, A.L. BROWN, T.L. DALY, R.J. LINTON, and W.J. MANOWN/ note: The plans and specifications for the new (1890) bride over the Mon at Elizabeth, provided for a bridge that waas too short to span the river there, but matched the length needed for the Belle Vernon bridge. This must have saved lots of time and money! When the bridge was opened (Jan 1 1895) there was a signabove the roadway: "Horse must not be driven over the bridge faster than a walk. Penalty $10 fine or 10 days in Jail". Bridge was a toll road until it was purchased jointly by Fayette and Washington Co., and declared free in July 1910. The old bridge was remodled and rebuilt (probably to better carry vehicle traffic) in 1940. The bridge was torn down in 1952and replaced by the new (route 70) bridge which exists today.
