Did anyone get back with the person that needed info on the Clark family? If not, I'll have time this evening to search for the names you need..Laura Nelle
hi folks... The following message came from a non-subsciber, please send return messages to Cora <[email protected]>, AND CC: to the list. Cora will be joining the list in the future. Thanks, Mike << In a message dated 11/11/99 4:28:40 PM, [email protected] writes: << I would like to know if anyone is researching this line. The sister of my ggGrandmother: Sophia WHEYL/WEYEL/WILE/WEIL/WILD [many different spellings on various official records!] died in 1923 and her obituary mentions her sister only as Mrs. John Evans of Dravosburg, PA. Sophia was 74 when she died and had come to the USA in 1852 as a very young child. Her obit also mentions her brothers [whose surname they spell as WEYEL]: John, Frederick, George and William. Sophia and her husband Peter CLINTNER lived in McKeesport, PA. So they are in the same vicinity as the EVANS you are seeking. Any connections? Cora <[email protected]> >>
Hello List Members, I agree 100%. there is more to Genealogy than names and dates. Items from the newspapers reflect life, as it was lived during that time period. It is especially interesting , when the prices are indicated. The names of the stores and the industries are important clues in Genealogy. If our ancestors did not own the stores, at least we know they did business there. I do not think we should be so critical of someone who takes their time to type the information for all of us to see. It does NOT appear by way of magic. Hello everyone, I have been told by the Fayette Co., Pa. list that my messages appear (to some subscribers) with non-ASCI characters in the title. These messages are then bouncing back to the listowner. Is this happening on these lists also? The Fayette Co. list is the only one which has complained so far, and I would like to know if the problem is theirs or mine. If it's mine, I don't know what to do about it. Thanks all. ===== Eva Dayle Zippay Tallahassee, Florida [email protected] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com
I think it was wonderful. It brought back memories, Showed the price for a first run movie at that date. I went to the second time around. It was 10 cents. Grant
Hi folks, I am a WEEKLEY, HIGGINS, TENNANT, BUCHANAN. ENOCH, and PRIBBLE researcher. Hopefully, I will meet some new 'cousins' on the list. Sharon (Weekley) Pawlowski, Cincinnati, OH
Hello list members.... (This started out as a "short note", but it soon became clear that a short note would not be enough. I appologize for the lenghth of this message) There's been a recent thread of messages concerning what does , and what dosn't fit within the scope of genealogy and/or Family history, and what should or shouldn't be included in messages to our list. The actual intended purpose of this list is, as with most mailing lists on rootsweb, would be more Family History, rather that the literal, scientific meaning of genealogy. According to Websters, it give these definitions of Genealogy: "1 : an account of the descent of a person, family, or group from an ancestor or from older forms 2 : regular descent of a person, family, or group of organisms from a progenitor or older form : PEDIGREE 3 : the study of family pedigrees" The original use of genealogy, was not as a hobby, but more as a way of recording "cold hard facts", that would be used for legal (finding heirs, for inheritance, birth parents, etc.) social (classes, clans, royalty), and later, medical purposes. Family history could be described as the study of persons, places, and events. My files here at home are full of personal notes, either from my own memory, or from stories of others, as they help to form a picture of what life was like for my ancestors, what kind of person they were, what type of hardships they may have endured, who their friends were, etc. Most of these notes would not fit into the literal discription of genealogy, but are most definately a part of "family history". I have chosen not to share a lot of this information on the list, unless a.) the event would pertain to, or include a number of other persons, who I could name, and whose family members would find it useful. or b.) the event was a major one that would effect the history of the Mon Valley, or the persons living there. With all that said, we must remember that not everyone has the same idea of what is important, and what isn't. We must also remember that these messages are all being archived, and 20 years from now, someone could be searching for information on our list that is important to them,! (buisnesses opening and closing, persons involved in an event, etc.) So, you see, this "debate" is not black and white. There are many grey areas. It all depends on your point of view. My point of view is that if the info might help someone else understand the life and times of their ancestors, it should be included. (Remember that businesses, organizations, clubs and churches are made up of people, so statements as to the when's and where's of these, even if not containing actual names should be considered acceptable). Messages stating your personal views, beliefs or opinions (political, social, religious) are best kept in private email, and not on the list. Please use you best judgement when posting messages, and if your not sure something should be posted, ask yourelf "could this someone else?" If the answer is Yes, send it. (If it is a response to someone elses post, and you're not sure if it belongs on the list, send it in a private email to that person). And when reading messages, if something seems insignificant, or worthless to you, ask yourself the same question. Again, sorry for my longwindedness. Kin Seekers, I do agree that the little tidbits about movies and prices do enhance our genealogy. I call it putting meat on the bones. It is part of doing Family History rather than just Genealogy. However, I do think that we do need some type of guide lines as to what we post and we all need to stick to it. Some could say my answer to Abbreviations was not "Genealogy." JANICE Lompoc, CA
Kin Seekers: "SL" or "Sl" is used in Soundex and Miracode Indexing Systems to mean Sister-in-law or Son-in-law. "Hk" was for Housekeeper, "Se" for Servant, "Se.Cl" for Servant's Child. Many census takers used their own Abbreviation, even if they were not 'official'. I highly recommend The Census Book by William Dollarhide. He lists 129 Relationtion Terms and Abbreviations Used in the Soundex and Miracode Indexing Systems. (By the way, he only lists Son-in-law for SL ). Many of these abbreviations were taken from the unoffical abbreviations used in the census schedules.I have this book and several others and would be more than happy to try and find answers to general questions concerning the census. Hello, If there is anyone on the list that is connected to the Vance family, would you please check your records to see if you have a Margaret Vance who married a John Roley who lived at Chestnut Ridge at Mt Pleasant? John Roley's dates are 1749-1822. Margaret was a second wife and was less than half his age. She had two sons: Robert b. 1812, and Michael Vance b. 1816. After John's death in 1822, she married someone by the name of Ryan or Ryam and seems to have disappeared from the PA Census. A man by the surname of Stauffer was appointed a guardian for Michael Vance. We have not found a guardian for Robert. We would like to know whether Margaret was a Vance or a Stauffer. I have not gotten the foggiest notion what church would have been in the area around 1800 to find marriage records or baptismal records. I hope someone can help with this Roley wall. The meeting of the Council, composed of units from Washington, Greene and Fayette counties, was held in the local Legion home with over 125 delegates representing 23 units of the Council. The executive board convened at 1 o'clock, followed by a regular meeting in charge of Miss Harriet WAGNER of Charleroi Auxiliary. Reports were submitted by subchairmen on activities of the units. Mrs. William PANCOAST, Charleroi, reported the coupon returns and announced that 175,000 of the coupons were turned in at the meeting. Uniontown alone brought in 135,000 of the total and is now leading in the State in coupon collection. Mrs. Earl BERTON, of California, sub-chairman of rehabilitation, spoke of the need of the Auxiliaries in rehabilitating the soldiers of the present war, especially in the veteran hospitals. Mrs. Ben DAVIS, Charleroi, sub-chairman of legislation, talked on the bill before the House for soldier benefits and asked members for its endorsement. Mrs. J.E. GAULT, reporting for war activities, announced plans for participation in the Fifth War Loan drive to start in June. Mrs. J.E. MOBLEY, of Belle Vernon, poppy chairman, announced the date of Poppy Day as May 27. She stressed the importance of the sale this year to assist the veterans of World War I and the present war. She said that many of the younger soldiers are now making the poppies in the veterans hospitals. Mrs. Austin DILLE, Waynesburg, who is department chairman of coupons for the State, congratulated the Council on its coupon work and stated that the group has kept up its collection so that the State department is reaching its quota of $2,100 a month, the value of the coupons. Mrs. Mary McANDRESS, of Pittsburgh, sub-chairman of Child Welfare, conducted the welfare shower, when money and clothing was contributed at the meeting to total $200.55 in cash and merchandise. Guests were Mrs. Edna CHAMBERLAIN, past state department president, and Mrs. Martin EISHLEMON, who is a candidate for state president. Mrs. Leonard BRADLEY, of Braddock, Southwestern director, spoke to the group stressing active participation on Poppy Day and the awarding of medals to the eighth graders. May 31 was announced as 'Patriot Day' when it is requested all Auxiliary members contribute a pint of blood to the blood centers. Mrs. George GEY, of Canonsburgh, Western vice president, congratulated the units on the work of the past three months. Mrs. Elizabeth HARRIS, of Charleroi, who is president of the Past Presidents Parley, announced that election of officers will be held at the next meeting of the Council, August 2. At this time the Council will nominate and elect officers. The meeting will again be held in Charleroi." Do they still have Poppy Day in the Valley?
