Hi, Listers, My association with the Mon Valley is both ancestral and personal. Some ancestors, the McCloskeys, came from Northern Ireland in the 1830s and moved from the port of Baltimore, through Mt. Savage, MD to settle in the long gone town of Port Perry. Port Perry was a thriving town near what is now Braddock. It ceased to exist as it was swallowed by the mills along the banks of the Mon. There has been talk of a limitation on the geography of this list, stopping in Elizabeth. Port Perry was downstream from there. It was, however, definitely in the Mon Valley. Family legend has my ggrandmother McCloskey rowing down the Mon to shop at Boggs and Buhl, returning the same way. I know that her in-laws, the Dunns, were from the North Side, so I suspect that if this legend is true, she may have spent the night with them. Other branches of my family were from the areas of Washington county called Candor, Cherry Valley and Burgettstown. I've not yet visited these places, but it does not appear that they are in the Mon Valley. My personal connection with the Mon concerns forbidden trips down Nine Mile Run, from my Regent Square home to the river. Nine Mile Run, named for the distance from the Point to its place of entry into the Mon, was a running sewer. The Mon of the late 40s and early 50s was not much better. That's the story of "Me and the Mon." Is this the list for me? Ken Jones in NH
Subject: RAYMER-HEVEKER-McCARTY-HOHMAN-HOWLEY My g grandfather, John Raymer, descendent of George Conrad Raymer (Romer) came to the USA from Langd, Germany via Johnstown. He moved to Dravosburg, PA and was married to Elizabeth West. They had several children, of which my grandfather, Bertram Albert Raymer was one. He married Louise Heveker and they lived on Hartman Street in McKeesport. Louise was the daughter of August Heveker and Louise Meier. Louise had a brother August who was a detective in McKeesport and died in Fort Worth, Texas. If anyone is researching this Raymer family, I was handed down a wealth of information and will share it - hopefully you have some things I could add to it. Willard McCarty was born in Scotland in 1875 and immigrated to the USA via Wheeling,WV, where he met and married my gram, Mary Cecelia Hohman, born 12-1886, d/o Catherine Howley, (unsure of father's first name, however, he died during a rescue attempt in one of the Wheeling floods - maybe a John Hohman?) Catherine was born in Ireland in 1864, possibly in the county of Sligo. Catherine is buried in the Mt. Calvery Cemetery on the Howley plot along with an uncle of mine, Charles and many other Howley's. Willard S. (Mac) and Mary Cecelia (Mame) Hohman McCarty lived on Camp Street in McKeesport before moving to Westmoreland County in the 1940's, where Willard took up farming. Any help in info on any of these people will be greatly appreciated, as I have no relatives left to ask questions of. This provided a wealth of knowledge for me. I work for Allegheny Power which is the utility that serves the Mon Valley and I find this stuff really interesting. I have a book that is the historical stuff of West Penn Power with pictures and news - if anyone has a need for something I could help them with let me know! Kathy M. Hi Mon Valley, I usually never participate in petty remarks about the content of subject matter on the various roots lists, however, because I live in the Mon Valley and am happy that we "natives" have a list to call our own, I am responding this first and last time. Genealogy is more than a list of birth and death names of family members. It is an appreciation of the lives of our ancestors, their trials, experiences, and everyday events. Just as I get excited when I see some particular point about my ancestors' lives during the 1700's, I appreciate seeing what occurred this century. On the list of movies that was just sent is the cost for service men to see a show. Although trival to some, it stood out to me because I remember standing in awe and looking up at a marine when I was just a little girl at the same theater mentioned. It was called respect, admiration, and honor. I was 7 years old. These types of things have brought back a lot of memories for me. On one message, Eva sent a list of service men called up for the draft. Among those was my father's name. Dad served in the U.S. Navy and saw active duty in the Atlantic. He is dead, but his spirit is still much alive tonight. Thanks Eva, for good memories of days past. Rosalie

I have a bit of a mystery in my BULGER research that one of you just might be able to help my out with. My Great Uncle (whom I know very little about) was MAURICE SCOTT BULGER b. 9-Nov--1892, son of Thomas W. Bulger and Flora BRAWELY. He is said to have attended Amherst College, served in WWI (picture in Uniontown Boys in the War) and from what I understand died in his 50's (maybe stroke) in the Pittsburgh area. I have been told by my dad that he married a McCLELLAND and that they had two girls. I'm guessing that there were quite a few McCLELLANDS in SW PA, but that just maybe someone out there might have some info that would help me out . I am at a loss as to whom Maurice married and where the girls went. Thank for your time... hope you can help me out in this mystery! Hello list members... Lets try a little experiment... sort of a mini roll call... that will help to pin-point when and where our ancestors first settled in the mid-Mon Valley. Lets keep it short and sweet to start, listing your earliest known direct ancestor that first came to the Valley, when, where they settled. Maybe your granddad and my granddad were neighbors!! I'll go first. Great great grandfather, John DONALDSON (1800-1880) and his brother James (1810-1863) were born in Perthshire Scotland. Moved in the 1920's to Canada (along with two sisters and their father.) The father died in Canada , the sisters remained there, and John and James moved to what is now Vesta / Allenport. John was willed the farm where he lived and worked, from his Uncle William DONALDSON in 1841. He eventually bought his cousins share of the farm (totaled 160 acres). The farm is the first, northernmost property as you enter present day Allenport coming from Charleroi. It streched nearly a mile, along the river, down to almost where "downtown" begins. (This area was known , unofficially, in the 1890's as "Donaldsonville") Thanks, Mike Donaldson ([email protected]) Allenport, PA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://www.my-ged.com/donldson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Listowner of: Monongahela River Valley of Penna Rootsweb mailing list: [email protected] - Mail mode [email protected] - Digest mode
