Hi Mike and Mon Valley, Short and sweet....Ancestral Grandparents Earliest ancestors to Mon Valley were Stephen and Margaret Brannon Maxon who arrived in Fayette County around 1789 and settled in Franklin Twp. They had three sons, Joel Maxon b. 1791 m. Hannah Fields; (my ancestral ggreats) Stephen Maxon, Jr. m. Rachel Cook, and Jesse Maxon m. (?) who had a son, Morris Maxon. They were Seventh Day Baptists and Quakers, then M.E. This family has roots to Mass and R.I. beginning in 1620 from England. Later my ancestors moved to Coal Center, Elco, (Woods Run) Roscoe, and Dunlevy. Joseph and Sarah Lancaster lived in Redstone Twp. in Fayette Co. in 1850. Next earliest Thomas Morgan son of Isaac and Sarah Morgan arrived from Wales in 1860, and settled in Jefferson and Franklin Twp. in Fayette County. Joseph and Missoura McIntosh lived in Bridgeport around 1860-parents of my gggrandmother, Catherine Elizabeth McIntosh Morgan Patterson. Barney Walker served in the Civil War in the Calvary and lived in Brownsville in 1860. Husband's earliest Thomas Wells, Capt. in Rev. War. Washington Co. (partially Virginia). Lived in Washington Area and in Monongahela. (1770's)His sons lived in California, Pa. Bridgeport, and Monongahela before some of them moved to Ohio and WVA. John Carroll and Mary Shields Carroll arrived from Scotland (Irish) in 1870, settled in Houtzdale, then California, Pa. before arriving in Charleroi 1901. Andrew and Anna Mary McIntrye Cairns arrived in California and Roscoe around 1870 from Scotland. Rosalie
Our MonVal ancestor arrived in Greene Co, PA, with some of his brothers around 1800. He was Joseph Wisecarver, out of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He and wife Rachel Hibbs located in Center Township and had Saloma (Orndorff), Susannah (Coen), Henry, Joseph(m.Mary Danes), Samuel (m. Mary Anne Wilson), Daniel?(m. Mary Seals) and Jacob(m. Jane McCormick). I cannot find Joseph(2)and Mary in the 1850 or later censuses of any imaginable states.I know of them only through their daughter's death certificate and the Hibbs FHL film #1033506. Does anybody out there know where Joseph (2)and Mary went to? He was born ca 1818, Center Twp., Greene County. Also searching Mary Dane's parents. Was her mother Puah Conklin Danes Martin, dau of Ananais Conklin? No clue on the Danes. I have information on the Wisecarvers and some of their cousins. Hope we can help each other. Also, any proof of John OWENS supporting the Revolutionary War--soldier or patriot. Would also like to know where John OWENS was buried.
Hello, I am looking for a relative who went to school with a BOOTH. My we do become bold on a list, don't we? Any way, you never know.... She was Maud Alice WOODS, my grandfather's first wife. If anyone thinks this looks familiar, I would love to know who Maud WOODS was. Maud was reportedly a schoolmate of the daughter of General Booth, of the Salvation Army. Family history gives us no date of the time or place of schooling, but may be a lead later as to where Maud was born and raised. I have attached a little about my grandfather, Charles Arthur STEWART, KY>Pittsburgh>Butler Children of WILLIAM STEWART and SALLIE (STEWART) are: i. JOHN WILLIAM2 STEWART, b. Bet. 1862 - 1866, North Carolina, age 14 on 1880 census. ii. JAMES HENRY STEWART, b. Bet. 1878 - 1880, North Carolina. iii. CHARLES ARTHUR STEWART, SR, b. December 18, 1872, Brooklyn, KY; d. My ggg grandfather, John GIBSON, born about 1799, probably in Scotland. Arrived in the Mon Valley approximately 1830-1840, Married Rebecca CRITES. They lived across the river from Monongahela, right along the river, where the old Monongahela bridge used to be, until they lost their home in the "Great Flood" (I'm not sure when this was, maybe someone can help me with this date.) After the flood, I think they moved across the river, into Monongahela. anyone have any clues on this one?? it is soooooooo early.............. From: [email protected] JANE ALLEN, b. 6/15/1739 in Scotland; d. 9/7/1814 in Warren Co., OH. Jane was a midwife in Washington Co., PA, where she met and married George Gillespie in 1762. George and Jane had 10 children in PA, before moving across the Ohio River into Warren Co., OH in 1794. Both George and Jane eventually died in Warren Co., but a number of their offspring went on the western OH---Miami and Shelby Counties. I would love to know who Jane's parents were, who she came to America with (and when), and if she had any siblings. I know there were a number of Allens in Washington Co., PA at the time of the 1790 census, but I've not found Jane listed. (She would have been a Gillespie by then, anyway.) Having no other Allen names, I can't tell which Allens on the census might be her family! Can someone help? Diane, Based on what I've found on the family John and Elizabeth (Lucas) Swan -- which has been fairly well researched and documented -- the Catherine Swan who married Joseph McIlvaine is not their daughter. Although I don't know (of course) why Catherine's parents disapproved of Joseph's revolutionary sympathies, I would suggest that you might look at any Swan families in Pennsylvania that were Quakers (or perhaps Loyalists). John Swan certainly would not have disapproved of a son-in-law for supporting the Revolution, which he himself actively supported. Also, at least four of his sons and two of his sons-in-law were Revolutionary War veterans. Ed & Lists: Knowing there have been requests for information concering the SEESE surname (as well as MILLER) I am sending this to the posts, as well as individually. I have been reading the Washington Pa newspapers on microfilm through interlibrary loan, and have read since 1850 to 1938 and have maintained a database of various information which may relate to my research for myself and others. I hope it will be of help to someone. This is not a line I am personally researching. Nancy Giles Harold Miller, Of This City, Drowns - Wading In Ohio River Near New Metamoras, W. Va. He Is Caught And Carried Under By Swift Current - Was Working On Highway - Harold Miller, 24, who left Washington in May to go to Ohio to seek work, was drowned in the Ohio River yesterday near New Metamoras, W. Va. while wading with several com-panions, none of whom could swim. The accident occurred on the Ohio side of the river. The youth was a son of Mrs. Charles Seese, Washington, R. D. 6. His father, Harold E. Miller, a painter, died six years ago. In a letter to his mother recently he explained that he had obtained work on the roads near Fly, O. and that he would begin work when the high water had receded. He had been staying with an uncle and aunt, Mr and Mrs. Cecil Timmons. Miller, a Timmons boy, and Ben Jones went into the river early in the afternoon and had been wading about half an hour when the strong current swept Miller away. The body was recovered about 30 minutes later 100 yards down the river, by Tex Talbott and Bill Hazlip, of Fly, Ohio. After trying artificial respiration for 40 minutes, a doctor pronounced Miller dead. Members of the West Virginia Heat, Light & Power Company's life-saving crew, however, worked on him for several hours after with an in-halator. Surviving in addition to his mother, are a number of brothers and sisters: Mrs. Daniel Varner, 139 West Pine avenue and Myra Miller, Francis Miller, Ruth Miller and Roy Miller, with their mother. The body will be brought to Washington late today and removed to the home of his sister, Mrs. Varner, where funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial will be in Washington Cemetery. The Washington Observer, Washington, PA 14 Aug 1935

Dear Carol How intriguing about the Booth living next door to Aaron Booth! Thanks to you Phil Booth
Once upon a time there was a baby boy born July 6, 1822. No one knows who his parents were. His descendants checked Census records, courthouses, historical societies, and books; but, no parents. He just appears in the Census as one Stephen Whetsel m. to his second cousin, Jane Whetsel b.1831. Stephen and Jane had one daughter and seven sons. For the most part Stephen lived in the Mon Valley; but, where his parents lived is a mystery. Does anyone have info on the parents of Stephen Whetsel?. I have seen at least 4 different spellings for Stephen's surname. We have a clue that Stephen's father may have been named John. Stephen and Jane named their first born son, John Homer and their second son George after Jane's father. Need some help to give Stephen some parents. I have found in the 1880 Harrison Co., W.Vir. census a Abraham Nuzum b. Dec 1838. Listed with him is wife Nancy E. born Jan 1836. Is this Nancy E. McCoats, the dau. of Sam McCoats and Hannah Springer? Can anyone confirm she is Nancy E. McCoats? Children listed in the census were Helen F. b. Apr 1873 and a son A. H. Nuzum born Sep 1884. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL RITES IN HONOR OF LATE BURGESS HUNDREDS PAY RESPECT AT CHURCH AND CEMETERY F. Lawson Teets, Former California Pastor, Eulogizes Character and Accomplishments In Sermon Masonic Rites Held At Cemetery The entire comminity suffered a shock last Sunday evening at the news that Burgess Eldridge Mansfield Copenhaver had been ovetaken by sudden death. Telephone wires were busy until far into the night as residence of California and vicinity made inquiries in the hope that the sad news might turn out to be an unfounded rumor. It was difficult for people to convince themselves that their esteemed fellow townsman who had been seen on the streets in what was apparently his usual state of health could have passed away. As Burgess Copenhaver died before a physician could be summoned it is impossible to say what the exact cause of his death. He had complained some during the last two or three weeks about not feeling very well but had been at work every day and been seen about town in the evenings. On Sunday he went to Pittsburgh to see his brother, Hubert, who had been a patient in South Side Hospital for some time. While he has been stated he was not feeling well, those who made the trip with him said that he seemed to be in an unusally good humor. He laughed and joked with his brother and the other members of the party and seemed to be his usual self. Arriving in California on Sunday evening he complained ---- have been indigestion and -- down on the couch at his home. According to his mother, Grace M. CARSON-COPENHAVER, who was the only person with him at the time he gave one gasp and passed away. Mr. Copenhaver was born April 30, 1887 and dies Sunday, January 18, 1931. That made his age at the time of death 43 years, - months, and -- days. Early in life he was married to Pearl Kiesling ------death, dying three yeas ago last December. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Copenhaver; Harold Ray, Edna Mae, and Paul, and these three survive their father. The son Harold is the eldest and is a student in the California High School. His brother and sister are both younger than he and are grade school pupils. The sympathy of the entire town goes out to the children who were bereft of both parents. Their aged grandmother remains with them. The deceased was in the midst of his second term as Burgess of the Borough of California. He had served his community faithfully and well dealing with intricately difficult problems as he presided with strict justice and fairness during a hard fought coal strike and coped with the ever present problem of law enforcement. It can truthfully be said of him that the best interests of his community were contunually uppermost in his mind. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons and had been made a Noble of the Mystic Shrine. He was also a member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. He was also a devout churchman belonging to the First Methodist Episcopal Church. of California where he rendered faithful and efficient service as a member of the Official Board. Funeral services sere held in the First Methodist Episcopal Church on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. The Reverand Harry Allan Price was in charge of the service and the music was furnished by the church choir under the direction of Prof. E.E. Halstead. The sermon was preached by the Reverand F. Lawson Teets, a former California Methodist pastor and a close friend of the Copenhaver family. He delivered an eloquent and masterly funeral address which will not be forgotten by those who heard it. He alluded to the distinguished character of the service which the decesed had always rendered to his church and to his community. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in California, the church being crowded to overflowing. There was a Masonic buriel service at the grave following the ritual of the church. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
