Hi list mates... I put together a little list that is derived from information in the Thurstons 1859 directory. This is a list of farmers along the river, and a few other proinciple citizens. To make this easier to read, I am listing the name , which side of the river the farm was located, the size of the farm (or other notes), and the present day name of the location of the farm. The exact location may be off a bit, due to the limited info in the directory, but it's safe to say, they are close! The order of the farms should be also pretty accurate. Imagine yourself getting on a boat in Bunola, Allegheny county, and traveling south on the river. Farms listed os being on the West side, would be on the right bank (Washington Co. Side) and those listed as East on the left (allegheny, Westmoreland and Fayette Co). Locations shown as Across from (somewhere), means across the river! Hope this helps someone pinpoint a relative! Regarding this message: ...Based on what I've found on the family John and Elizabeth (Lucas) Swan -- which has been fairly well researched and documented -- the Catherine Swan who married Joseph McIlvaine is not their daughter... As a descendant of John and Elizabeth Swan I agree that this Catherine isn't part of the family. I have run across other 'Swans' as I researched my own; the majority were a part of the Swan family which were first in New England and then moved through PA into VA. Information about them can be found in the beginning pages of S.D. Swan's book, "Family Record of John Swan of Greene County, Pennsylvania." I have seen copies of this book in the Greene and Fayette County libraries and, having made a copy of the information I researched long enough to prove to myself that the author was absolutely wrong about the connection. In addition, these other Swans appeared to be of a more gentile lineage, not like John Swan's rough and tough pioneer family of which I am so proud!
