Within the estate papers for Conrad EMICH that I brought home from Montgomery Co. last week, was a document stating, "The petition of Nicholaus ENGART one of the children of Barbara ENGART sister and devisee under the Will of Conrad EMICH late of said county...". Conrad's Will lists dec'd brother, Henry; brother, Nicholaus; sisters, Elizabeth & Barbara. The latter three were residing near Bosdorf/Rosdorf (Germany?). (1827) I have the following documentation for a Nicholaus: Burial - Upper Dublin Lutheran or Old Puffs reads: John N. ENGARD 1772-1861 Buried in same cemetery is Conrad EMICH and ADAM RODEMICH. Census records coordinate with tombstone dates. However, census records for 1850 and 1860 also state Nicholaus was born in Germany. Some of his children are in the "Poor School". He names one son, Philip. I have copy of Will in file of Philip ENGARD (proved 1813), naming 9 children including Nicholaus, with estate being divided nine ways which implies that Nicholaus is a son of Philip. I have a marriage record for Nicholaus and Caty FABRITZ in 1796 - St. Michael's Zion Church, Phila. By 1850, he is married to Margaret/Eva Margaret -------. And per the dates I have accumulated for Philip's kids, Nicholaus was the last one born just 10 1/2 months after the one before him. I know that is possible but doesn't fit the normal pattern. Any ideas? Has anyone encountered an uncle in America taking in a nephew as their child when child's parents are still in Germany? Gerre Engard Byrd
