Does anyone know of any Brethren or Mennonites who might have migrated from Chester/Berks Co to Lawrence KS about 1877? I am looking for a William George SAVAGE or George William SAVAGE b 6/11/1855 in Chester Co, PA, who left Reading,PA and went to Lawrence KS in 1877. I do not know when he died. According to "Cutler's History of the State of Kansas", particularly Douglas Co where they relocated, George W SAVAGE was married to Julia HUGHLETT, a native of Virginia, on 3/8/1876 in Reading PA. He was a machinist in Reading and was employed by the Scott Iron Works, having worked on Carliss engines, cotton presses, rolling mill machinery. He and Julia moved to Lawrence KS in 1877 where he was first employed by the Kansas Pacific Railroad and then went to South Park CO for a few years to learn mining. He returned to Lawrence in 1882 and, with a Mr. LIGHTCAP, founded the Douglas County Iron Works in Lawrence in spring of 1882. He and Julia had a dau Maud H SAVAGE. George W SAVAGE had two sisters: Clara SAVAGE 1851-1900 (w/o Daniel W. LANDIS -1850-1886) who was my gr grandmother and Minerva SAVAGE (1850-1906) who married a Dutton LIGHTCAP of Pottstown 1837-19??) and with her moved to KS and then to AL. Mr LIGHTCAP became a prominent dentist in Talladega AL. His parents were Samuel and Mary LIGHTCAP (a locomotive engineer) and were shown on the 1850 Census in Pottstown PA with 2 sons Dutton age 13 and Samuel age 8. I am not sure if he (George SAVAGE) was Brethren or Mennonite. I have not been able to find his religious affiliation. The SAVAGE family was from E Coventry, Chester Co PA and his grandfather, Zenas SAVAGE, who died in 1877 was interred at E Coventy Union Meeting House (which I believe is now called Oak Grove Cemetery). Daniel and Clara SAVAGE LANDIS lived in Pottstown and were members of the First Baptist Church there. They are buried in Mt Zion Cemetery outside Pottstown. Minerva and Dutton LIGHTCAP are buried in Talladega AL. I would appreciate anyone's help on the Douglas Co, Kansas SAVAGE connection and any Chester/Mongomery/Berks Co information on these SAVAGEs, LIGHTCAPs and HUGHLETT. I am also searching for information on the father of these SAVAGEs: George W SAVAGE born 1/17/1825 and died 1/12/1856. He married Charlotte KERST MOHR, (dau of Elias N MOHR and Mary KERST of Union Twp, Berks Co PA.) on 12/26/1848 by a Rev G Orem. This was in the Village Record newspapaer on Accessible Archives. Where would I find out what religious affiliation Rev Orem would have been? Would anyone have a newspaper OBIT of his death? He was young - age 31 and cause of death is puzzling at such a young age. He is buried next to his parents, Zenas and Rebecca MARCH SAVAGE in Oak Grove Cemetery, Chester Co. His widow, Charlotte K SAVAGE, is buried in Mt Zion Cemetery, Pottstown. If anyone has any reference to any of these kin, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank you. Sorry to be so long winded! SAVAGE, LANDIS, KERST, MOHR, LIGHTCAP, HEWLETT, JONES, NEUKIRCH, DUGAN in Chester, Berks and Montgomery Co PA and Lawrence KS Diana
