Patricia, Here is the line you are looking for, working backwards. The Bertolet Book was printed in 1916, so the children of Laura and Calvin would have been born after that time. March 11, 1852 Samuel (Abraham, Jean) second son of Abraham and Esther DeTurk Bertolet was b. at Oley, Pa on Sept. 14, 1743 and d. Jan. 1, 1805. He is buried on his own land, now the Bertolet burying Ground at Frederick, Mont. CO, Pa. In 1771 he was married to Esther, the oldest daughter of Jacob and Susanna Frey. They were first cousins. She was b. Aug 26, 1756, d. June 12, 1788 There were eight children born to this family. On Jan 26, 1790 Samuel was married the second time to Elizabeth Frey. She was a sister to his first wife and was born June 6, 1762. She d Aug 8, 1823. There were 5 children born to this union, including your Daniel. This is an interesting story. Heinrick Frey was here on the dock to welcome Wm. Penn. He was said to be the first German in the state. He had a grandson Jacob who was m. to Susanna Bertolet, sister of Abraham. He was building a house in Frederick Twp, when he died, and Susanna sent for her nephew Samuel to come and help finish the house. This he did, but ended up marrying his first cousin having children, and upon her death, he married her sister.(nothing like keeping it in the family). Samuel continued living in the newly completed house, and was a rev. war participant. His next door neighbor, Frederick Antes got up a company, and Samuel joined. He was engaged in the battle of Brandywine, and Paoli, and took provisions to Valley Forge in the dreadful winter of 1776. In the fall of that year, George Washington came to the home of Antes, and his body guards and all the horses stayed with Samuel. G. W. would walk next door each day to drink from Samuel's mineral spring. Some of the land of the farm of Samuel was set aside for a burial ground, and in 1847 a Mennonite meeting house was built in front of the cemetery, made of bricks made on the farm. My daughter was married there this past July. Because Samuel was Mennonite, he served his time in the army as a wagoneer, hauling wounded soldiers to hospitals, etc. Jean, the grandfather of Samuel was a French Huguenot. I will send you another email with the URL of my data base where you can pick up the line of Jean and Abraham (I am tired of typing). If you are at all interested, I suggest you purchase the book which was reprinted a few years ago. In it you will find much infro about Jean, Samuel, and Daniel. There is also a picture of Benjamin Bertolet, Abraham, Daniel and Ezra. Interesting point that Benjamin looks like a twin to an Uncle who is 92 and still living. I hope this helps. If you need more, let me know. Yvonne
