    3. In the Pennsylvania Archives Series, there is mention of a Seven Stars 'Tabern', Plymouth Twp., Montgomery Co., in 11/7/1775 where a person named James RYAN had enlisted. Quite often the inns/taverns were used as voting places, mail delivery, sheriff/court notices, and points of recruitment/enlistments! The Pennsylvania Archives Series 5 Volume IV Body Abstracts Of Pension Applications On File In The Division Of Public Records,...p 545 Sherry, didn't I read that it had been torn down? Well, it was still there in 1775! Several of your replies added extra tidbits that help me pinpoint the location on a modern map. It was definitely located in Montgomery County. I have a reprint of the 1758 map that shows it in tiny letters, but definitely right where the written descriptions place it. The inn of the same name in Chester County is a different one, given that it is dated to 1718 and was being operated during the same time period as the one in Montgomery County. The quote below is from the modern Seven Stars Inn's website and explains why so many taverns used the name. "The name "Seven Stars remains a mystery. Some say it was named for Seven Crossroads, or Seven Daughters. Others say it is for the seven stars in the Big Dipper or the Seven Years of America's War for Independence. From antiquity people have been fond of using the number seven in naming their properties. Seven Stars" was a popular name for inns and taverns in England and Colonial America. The name lent itself to simple, clear symbolic signs which were much in use for the benefit of those who did not speak English." A Google search for "Seven Stars Inn" brings up 9,500 hits! Thanks for your "hits." Sherry Johnson - ------------------------------- Yahoo! Photos Got holiday prints? See all the ways to get quality prints in your hands ASAP. ______________________________
