    1. [PAMONTGO-L] BERGEY/BERGER & HALDEMAN
    2. << BERGEY, Hannah M., Abraham, Abraham, Christian, John Ulrich(immigrant) >> 1728 - Philip ENGARD was a "Palatine" immigrant to America. He signs with "X" on ship list and is named as "Hans Philip". His father may have been Jacob ENGAR/ENGER who is buying land in Salford Twp, Montgomery Co., PA by 1728 from Johannes Ulrich BERGEY. 1747 - Philip ENGERT and wife, Catherine Elizabeth, sponsor the baptism of Catharina Elizabeth, dau. of Christoph BERGER & wife, Maria, at the New Providence Augustus Lutheran Church in Trapp, New Providence Twp., Montgomery Co., PA. And the HALDEMAN name: It is thought that Jacob ENGAR/ENGER never lived on the land in Lower Salford per History of Montgomery Co., PA. However, from the Genealogies of PA Families, pp. 707 - 719 indicates Jacob ENGERS did live there (very near Nicholas Haldeman, Sr.) before moving to Coventry, Chester Co., PA in 1735. It was abt 1742 that Nicholas Haldeman moved to Coventry Twp. also. (Haldeman was from Switzerland.) Sources: Bulletin of Historical Society of Montgomery Co., Sketches of Lower Salford Twp., Montgomery Co., PA; Genealogies of PA Families. I would love to know if there is some family connection of BERGEYs & HALDEMANs to ENGARDs. We have never found the surname for Philip ENGARDs wife, Catharine Elisabeth ______. Gerre Engard Byrd.

    2. For what its worth - there were at least two Ephraims in Bucks Co also. My gg-grandfather was Ephraim Doan Tomlinson of Southampton, Bucks. The original immigrant of his line was Richard who came to Phila in early 1700's and oddly, there were no Ephraims in this line until mine (b. 1816). Somewhere I read that at least one brother of Richard came also but haven't researched them. 3. Lois, I see you have RAMBO on your surname list. Do you have anything on the Peter Rambo referred to in the following article taken from ADVERTISEMENTS AND NOTICES OF INTEREST From Norristown, PA Newspapers, Vol II, 1822-1827 Compiled by Judith A.H. Meier?: "Friday 8, 1823" "ON friday afternoon last, Peter RAMBO (shoemaker) and Nathan MILLER attempted to cross the river Schuylkill, opposite this borough, on the ice, but unfortunately before they got half way over, the ice gave way, and both went into the water, 8 or 10 feet deep. By their cries assistance came in time to save Nathan MILLER -- every exertion was made to save Mr. RAMBO also, but he perished before he could be taken from the water. His remains were decently interred on saturday last. We hope the above will be a sufficent caution to too frequent adventurers. Several others have already very narrowly escaped the fate of Mr. RAMBO this season". I am intertested in the names of both of the wives and other family members, how old the actors were, and any other information pertinent to this incident. 1. Re: [PAMONTGO-L] Surnames - Tomlinson/Cleaver
    2. Hi, I'm a Bedford Co volunteer genealogist, and also a close friend of some Quaker Tomlinsons in NJ. Yes, I have seen that name here in our county. I work at the hist soc every Friday and can check out a few things for you. But, if FLOYD doesn't give us too much rain, I'll heading for Annapolis in the morning and won't be working this week. ---------------- Hope FLOYD didn’t give you too many problems! I am a native of "Bard Hollow" near West End in Juniata Twp. I grew up on the farm that my GGF Rev. D.S.A. Tomlinson purchased in 1883 after he sold the parsonage that is pictured in the 1884 Beers Atlas of Bedford Co . The mercantile store in this drawing was moved to the farm and is still being used by my brother, who now owns the farm, as his woodworking shop. ================= The NJ/Phila Tomlinsons are concentrated on the name of "Ephraim" in every generation. They very early had mills in South Jersey, then Gloucester Co, now Camden Co. (I grew up in that area, and moved here on retirement). I can give you their pedigree chart as I drew it up for them. ------------- I have tried to connect my GGGGf Joseph Tomlinson to the Maryland clan and can find no connection - even though there was a Joseph and Benjamin (from Maryland) who both owned land in Londonderry Twp, Bedford Co, South of Hyndman and also in Somerset County up on the mountain from Helixville. 1. Joseph Tomlinson (b. 23 Mar 1772 d. 06 Aug 1858), The 1884 Atlas of Bedford Co - article on D.S.A. Tomlinson is only one of three references that I have found about my Joseph. This article says he came to Bedford Co in 1810 from Adams County. Shortly after arriving, his first wife died and outliving his second wife he lived the remainder of his years with son Joseph W. The second reference to him is the Spring Meadow cemetery listing of his first wife, Sarah McCreary - "consort of Joseph Tomlinson" and the third reference is one I found in DAR records at Ancestry.com and then I got copies of the actual documents. This was the first document I found regarding Joseph’s second son ‘s name - Benjamin. I have never found where Joseph is buried. He is not with Sarah at Spring Meadow. And he is not in any listing I have seen of Messiah Lutheran Church where his son Joseph W. and most of his children are buried. He could be buried somewhere with his second wife but I have never been able to find out who she was. I have not been able to locate Joseph in Adams county or find out who his parents were. I believe he was in Adams Co because Sarah McCreary’s parents Amos McCreary Sr. and Hannah Whinery came to Bedford Co from Adams Co. Fred Ickes from Fishertown, local Quaker and McCreary expert, doubts that Amos McCreary is Sarah’s father because neither she or her descendants were named in Amos Sr.’s will. However, Hannah Whinery’s father’s will from Adams Co. refers to his grandaughter Sarah McCreary. I have found lots of info on the Whinery’s who were Quakers. The children of Amos McCreary, Sr. were also active in Spring Meadow but Joseph may not have been a Quaker. His son Joseph W. was an elder in Messiah Church and produced four sons who became Lutheran ministers. I have lots of info on Joseph W. and his descendants. Because of the DAR info, I just this week received word from a "look-up" in the will index of Jefferson County, W. Va. that there is indeed a Benjamin Tomlinson will listed for 1886. I have sent off for this will. Dad remembers his mother saying that after the Civil War her Grandfather, Joseph W. and his brother never spoke to each other again. Now I know why. He lived his life in Charles Town, W.Va. and married into a Virginia family. This is also why I never found a reference to him in Bedford Co. ---------------- This is the story of my family, what I know and what I don’t know. Other than my Tomlinson family, I have found only three other references to Tomlinsons in Bedford Co. that I cannot connect to my family. 1. The "Release of Legatees" for Lydia Ann Tomlinson Cleaver listing Montgomery Co & Phila residents 2. In the 1850 Census of Bedford Co. there is an Ann and a John listed as well as my Joseph W. family 3. The Benjamin and Joseph of Maryland who owned land in Londonderry Twp. So this is why I am trying to track down Lydia Ann family to try to find some connection. If she was from the Philadelphia area, why did she come to Bedford Co.? The administrator of Lydia’s will was Uriah Blackburn, brother of Tom Cleaver’s first wife. I believe Uriah Blackburn owned property near Joseph W. Tomlinson at Dutch corner. Could Lydia have been a relative of Joseph, visiting Pa and met Tom through his first wife’s brother?? Perhaps I am grasping at this point? I have 286MB of info in my Tomlinson file and still no parents for Joseph. What else do you do when you hit the brick wall and spend so much time getting no where?? Sorry to ramble. Thanks for any help you can provide.
