Hello All, My name's Mike Ciotti, and my gr-gr-gr-grandfather was George W. Guss, Captain of Co. "C" of the 138th Pennsylvania Volunteers. I am looking to see if anyone has any information on this unit, whether an ancestor served in it or just if they have any idea on where I could get some information. I have already checked Bates' Unit History/Roster and have also viewed two different copies of the regimental history, one at the Montgomery County Historical Society and another at the Grand Army of the Republic museum. I'm compiling info for my own personal knowleade as well as perhaps a more in-depth regimental history then the one published in 1867. Thanks ahead of time for anyone that can help! ----Michael Ciotti
Diana, I don't know if the Leger was a weekly or a daily. Something tells me it was both. Perhaps the early version was weekly, but it eventually became daily. Betty Burdan
Betty Burdan: Thank you for your info on the Pottsdtown paper. I will check at my local library here in AL to see if they can get a copy from the library there under inter-library loan. If anyone is going to the Pottstown Library anytime soon, I sure would like a copy of the obit for Charlotte K SAVAGE died 12/4/1902 and buried in Mt Zion. Do you happen to know if the Ledger then was a daily or weekly paper? I found the one here in AL was a weekly published on Wednesdays! Diana
As far as I know there is no interlibrary loan the Mercury which is the paper is at the Pottstown Library some are on film and the rest is in the basement which you have to make an appointment and if they do a lookup it 25.00. I have had it done. I know they are in the process of microfilming all the papers in the basement/ O how I wish they had a library loan. You might be able to get someone in the area to do a lookup. I have had luck with that. Good luck ellie
Hi Margaret, My grandgrandparent's attended the New Hanover Lutheran Church, in New Hanover, PA. There was also the Falckner Swamp Church, but I believe there are different spellings of it. The Christ Lutheran Church on Niantic Rd, Barto, PA 19504. I have relatives buried there. I have been researching the Hubers. Hope this is of some help. Judy, The Montgomery County Court House has marriage records from 1884 to present, and birth and death records from 1893 to 1913 only. They are at 610-278-3000, Orphans Court, P.O.Box 311, Norristown PA 19404-0311. Earlier marriages are usually only available from church, bible, or similar records. You might try The Historical Society of Montgomery Co., 1654 DeKalb St, Norristown 19401, 610-272-0297, or someone like that, or books on earlier Marriage records of PA. Dan Judy A. Hi List, I wrote some time ago asking about research at the courthouse in Norristown, and I think there was one response that said to go to other places. However, I would still like to know where I can find the birth, marriage, or death records of my Hunsberger relatives who were living in Upper Hanover Twp. in 1850, according to the census for that year. My gggrandfather Jesse Hunsberger was a blacksmith and attended the evangelical church, although I am not sure which one. He was married to Leah Hittle (her parents are Mary and Daniel Hittle). In 1850, Jesse and Leah are shown with two children, ages 1 and 2, and four other persons living in the same house. Where can I find marriage application records and birth records for them? I plan a trip down to PA in January and need to optimize my research time as I will have only two days, one of which I will spend in Reading. Thanks for any help anyone can give. One of the names of the papers in Pottstown was the Pottstown Ledger. Your ancestor is listed in the Pottstown Ledger Necrology Report [deaths from the past year] in January of 1903, as follow: Died Elsewhere and Buried in Our Cemeteries; Dec. 4, 1902; Charlotte K., widow of George Savage, Talladega, Alabama, aged 76, [buried] Mt Zion. This does not mean there was an obituary in the paper, there may be and there may not be. The Pottstown Public Library has the Ledger on micro film as does the Pottstown Historical Society. The Historical Society library is open the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month from 1 to 5. The Pottstown library hours probably listed in the phone book. I would venture a guess that is highly unlikely that they would permit the film to go out on loan. The Montgomery County Historical Society also has the Ledger on micro-film, but they probably do not make loans either. Betty Burdan <bjburdan@ptd.net>
