Hi!! While trying to research information about Joseph T Hipple (1861-1039) I obtained information about one of his children who died in infancy. Since the photocopied page has several names. I am sending out the information. The handwriting is hard to read, so there may be some mispelled names. This entry appears in the pastoral record of the Rev. L. Kryder Evans who served the Reformed congregation (Trinity Reformed) from 1867 to 1912. This is also listed as the German/English Reformed Congregation of Pottstown. Additional information can be obtained from The Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society. 555 West James St. Lancaster, Pa. 17603 What is truely sad about this, is that some of the same children who were listed as Baptized on the previous page, are listed here as well. |--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------| |Date of Burial|Name |Disease |Age |Text | |--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------| |Nov 19, 1890 |Clarence |Diphtheria |7-3-4 |Jno 4:50 | | |Schell | | | | |--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------| |Nov 20, 1890 |Jacob Bush |Typhoid Fever |25-1-17 |German Ps | | | | | |90:12 | |--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------| |Nov 22, 1890 |Miss Joanna |Consuption |60-2-12 |Ps 77:2 | | |Krause | | | | |--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------| |Nov 27, 1891 |Mrs Margaret | Dropsy |52-5-13 |Amos 4:12 | | |Mayo | | | | |--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------+--------------| |Nov 29,1890 |Garrett leroy | ???? Joan, Ther formatting in your list did not travel well. Often when tab-sets are used in lists they are lost in transport. Between the missing tab stops and word wrap differences I wasn't able to make out who belonged to who on the list....at least any thing I would rely on. Send again in simple text format, no tabs. Last Sunday I posted a request for help in tracing my ancestor on this list. Within two days I received a lot of replies, some with advice and some with information. I now know that the Rev. William Mathews was minister of Montgomery Baptist Church from 1841 - 50, that in 1850 he was a farmer with real estate valued at $600 and was married for a second time with a young son. His wife was born on 18 Sept 1807 in Pennsylvania, and she died on 23 Jan 1876. She is buried in the Montgomery Baptist Church along with her son John who died on 5 Jul 1872 aged 25. (I expect William is buried there too, but there's no record of a gravestone - perhaps there's a memorial inside the church - something else to pursue.) All this from one post on the list. I'm now following up all the suggestions for further enquiries, and once I'm a bit further I'll probably post another plea for help. I've replied individually to all the people who contacted me, and I've taken up their offers of further help. This post is just to acknowledge their assistance and to say thanks again for such a helpful list. Dick Mathews (in freezing cold Essex, U.K.)

Try looking at http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/census/ discover all the possibilities to get a state and country profile of where your ancestor lived. 1790-1970 census data covered here agricultural, manufacturing, foreign born % of pop. and many other interesting statistics down to the county level. Barb
Hi Listers, I was just at the Alfred State College library this afternoon and came across a wonderful research aid by way of the Abstract of the 1910 Census. I wanted other years, but this was the only one they had, so I used it. It is published by the Bureau of the Census and takes all the census info and compiles tables and all kinds of information. This is extremely helpful to family history researchers if you are trying to compile a profile of the area where your ancestors lived. I believe there is a book like this for every census. Many of my ancestors lived in Reading and Berks from 1850 to the present. So what kinds of information can you find? I will summarize a portion of it for those of you who might want it for your records. This book covers the whole US and had a NY state supplement at the end. Here goes! Berks County in 1910 had an area of 865 Sq. miles and a population of 183,222, up from 159,615 in 1900, and 137,327 in 1890. The population of PA in 1910 was 7,665,111. Fifty to 75% of this population was living in urban areas, defined as cities and other incorporated places of 2500 inhabitants or more. The population of Reading in 1910 was 96,071, of which 74,714 were native born; 11,750 were of foreign or mixed parentage; 8,812 were foreign born whites; 787 were Negroes; and 8 were Ind, Jap., Chi., & other. There were 47,576 males and 48,495 females. It further breaks down the population of the foreign born by nation, the highest percentage being from Germany. It gives statistics on the number of persons 15 and older who are married, single, divorced, widowed, also divided by male and female within these categories. It lists number of school children and number of illiterates. The number of dwellings was 20,798, families 21,809, and breaks it down by persons per dwelling and per family, showing a comparison of the same to 1900 and 1890. Reading's population in 1890 was 58,661 and in 1900 was 78,961. There is data on industry, mining, and agriculture. The agriculture section lists average size of farms and value of farm lands back to 1850. This helped me since my gggrandparents had property on the 1850 census valued at $1500. Taking the average price per acre of farm land in 1850, and dividing it into that total value, I have determined they owned somewhere between 90 and 100 acres. Now.....if I can just locate that farm!!! Next trip to PA, I will!!!!!! It also showed that farmland nearly doubled in value by 1870. Since my gg's moved to Reading in 1867, they probably realized a significant profit when they sold the farm (assuming they did so!) Although this book and the same book for other census years won't help you with specific surnames, it might give you a ton of clues about the times in which they lived and what surrounded them, both people wise, property wise, and economically. So keep researching!!! Judy in upstate NY ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! Hello everyone, I found this article in a local paper, "The Intelligencer" http://www.phillyburbs.com/intelligencerrecord/news/news_intell/607573.htm Board to identify at-risk historical buildings By Leo Shane III Staff Writer HORSHAM Council's newest advisory committee will make identifying at-risk historical properties its primary focus for the next few months, board members announced Tuesday. The Horsham Historical Advisory Board also appointed its officers at its first meeting, naming Peter Walts chairman and Margaret Choate secretary. The five-member board will meet the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the township building. Last month, the council commissioned the advisory board to research and report on historic properties in the township, in part because of the near loss of the Culf house last spring. After plans for its demolition had been approved, the Norristown Road structure was found to have Underground Railroad tunnels in its basement. The historical advisory board members said they hope to focus on similar endangered structures, including three they have already identified. The buildings are rumored to be targets for development and include a Babylon Road building believed to be a colonial schoolhouse. Choate said she has already received permission to photograph the interior of one of the three threatened structures. "If we can't stop demolition, I want to get some record of all of them." Township manager Mike McGee said the board cannot set policy regarding historic matters, but will advise the council on the best ways to preserve the township's past. Choate is also president of the Horsham Preservation and Historical Association, an independent corporation that has done extensive research on the area's history. She said the group has already identified nearly 100 private residences in the municipality that were built before 1900. The preservation group is also acting as the caretaker for the Penrose/Strawbridge property, located on Governor Road and once used as a distillery for Pennsylvania's provincial governor in the early 1700s. The advisory board will also research that township-owned property and recommend possible uses. The board members said along with a list of council requests, they hope to establish some means of monitoring incoming construction proposals to make sure historic buildings are not being jeopardized.
I was watching Antiques Road Show and saw a chest that belonged to Johanne YODER of Mifflin, Pa. in 1835. He was married to a woman who's surname was ZUT. Value of the chest was between 10 & 12,000. ( Program #401 Premiered Monday, January 10, 2000 at 8pm ET ). Thought I would pass this on to all you YODER hunters out there.
HI Sharon, What data base are your referring to? My obit of Leah shows her parents as Daniel and Mary Hittel (le) and says she was born near Boyertown. I have an extensive family list of a Daniel and Mary and numerous children, but it does not include Leah. The person who provided it says that it includes ALL of their children, that Leah is not in the line. So I checked this particular Daniel's estate papers at the Montgomery County courthouse last week, and he died intestate. The records do not list the children. So I am still at a dead end on her. Thanks for your post. HI Terry, Thank you for your response to my post and to everyone else who also responded. The book is called "The Hunsbergers" and consists of three volumes, sells for $91.00, and can be ordered on the Hunsberger Assoc. website. The address is http://www.hunsberger.org/assoc.htm If you find your line in the book, you can download forms from this website to update your entries, or add additional entries for the next publication. I am currently updating and correcting my family entries that I found in the book. When I get my book, I will be glad to do lookups if I don't get swamped with hundreds of requests. Good luck with your research. Judy in upstate NY On Tue, 18 Jan 2000 04:00:33 -0800 "Terry D. Smith" <tsmith@lds.net> writes: > Dear Judy... > > It sounds like you had a fruitful visit to PA. Judy, Not sure where I got the info ------ I was referring to my personal database. Maybe I got it from you originally?????? Sharon
I posted a couple of queries and got zero responses, so maybe I'm not doing this right. I'll try one more time... I'm looking for any information on Jacob Ellsworth KEPNER. He would have been born around the 1860-70s. His wife was Ida Belle SWEITZER. They had a son named Charles Ray KEPNER born 27 Dec 1896 and died Jul 68. Charles Ray lived in Scottdale and married Birdella Marion Herwick. I live in Germany and don't have alot of access to things in the states. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Steve Koehler
Judy, My database shows Leah Hittle's parents as: Daniel Hittle & Mary. I'm not sure how accurate that info is as I have no sources listed. You may want to check into it. I have no further info on this couple or other children besides Leah. Sharon
Hi Lists, I apologize if you are getting this post more than once as I am on several lists. I just returned this past Friday from a week in PA and NJ. In addition to visiting my parents in NJ, I spent several days researching in Reading and Norristown. I broke through one brick wall at the Berks County Genealogical Society when I researched in the Hunsberger Book. I found the ancestors of my gggrandfather, JESSE FRANKLIN HUNSBERGER and discovered that they were German speaking Swiss Mennonites who originally came here to flee religious persecution. I was amazed to find myself, my siblings and cousins galore in the book. I plan to buy this book at some point. If you are researching Hunsberger, or any of the variant spellings, you and they are most likely in this book. It's a good source to research to fill in your family trees. The BCGS in Reading has this book as well as the Montgomery County Historical Society in Norristown. The above breakthrough led me to find the location of the grave of my ggggrandfather, John Hunsberger, two of his siblings, and his parents. We got photos of the grave sites and cemetery, which is behind the Mennonite church in Franconia, Pa, also rubbings of the tombstones, one of which is in German. I also got a copy of the will of my gggggggrandfather at the Montg. County Courthouse. Copies there cost $1.00 a page. I found Jesse Hunsberger's date of licensing with the Evangelical Association in the minutes of the same. We explored the Reading City Directories and found early addresses for many ancestors. Also found baptism and confirmation dates for others in church records. Upon leaving the Reading Library, I learned they have most of the censuses there on microfilm. Will have to do that next time. We did the Reading courthouse and got a few estate papers. I am still at a dead end on MARY ETTA ROTHENBERGER, THOMAS HOLT, CHRISTIAN BARTH, and LEAH HITTLE (Jesse Hunsberger's wife). Thank you to everyone for your help and suggestions. I will be busy for some time entering all the new data into my family tree. If you go to Reading, be very careful of the parking meters. The meter readers are vultures! I missed getting more money in by 15 minutes while researching at the library and got an $8.00 parking ticket (in the pouring down rain!) We used the parking garage across from the courthouse, which isn't cheap, but saves worrying about the meters. In Norristown, there is a parking garage directly under the courthouse and elevators take you directly into the building. Again, there are security checks. They will confiscate pocketknives and nail files, to name a just a few items. Does anyone have a John BUZZARD who married a Hannah SAVAGE in 1/3/1816 in Reading, Berks Co, PA? According to Family History file AFN BVZ3-VX he was born in Coventry in about 1790. He died 6/16/1856 in Montgomery Co PA. Hannah SAVAGE was born in Coventry, Chester Co., PA. on 2/17/1794. She was dau of Zenas SAVAGE and Catherine BOYER. Does anyone have info on them? Audiana@webtv.net Diana
From my experience........ 1. First always check what counties were in existence when the person was born. New counties were created from old ones. And sometimes because of that, you find you are researching in the wrong county. For example, my ancestor was born in Huntingdon County, Pa. (present day Blair County, Pa.). So even though his record said he was born in Huntingdon County, I would be wrong to research in Huntingdon. I need to research in Blair County, Pa. 2. Delayed birth certificates can have correct or incorrect info on them just as early birth and death certificates can have correct or incorrect info on them. Generally speaking, the closer the relation of the person giving the info, the greater chance to have correct info. So I try to identify the source of the info. Usually a spouse gives the most accurate info. But even children can give a place of one time residence as a birth place, believing that was where he was born. I guess the best thing is to try to work the clues you found...... check out federal census for the area he was supposedly born in and see if you find the surname there and that specific family, check church records in that area etc. and after some investigation, you will prove or disprove that bit of info. Good Luck.......Judy
People didn't always take the time to travel to the county seat to record a birth, especially if there was no doctor present at the delivery. Later, they may have discovered that they needed proof of the birth of a child, so they went to the courthouse and recorded it then. I had an Uncle born in the 1890s, probably in Montgomery County, and his birth certificate was a delayed issue in Berks at the time of his death (in Berks County). I guess they couldn't record him as deceased until they had him recorded as being born. Check the delayed date issue and see if there was anything els going on in the family at the time....(i.e. an estate settlement, entering school, death, etc.) Betty Burdan <bjburdan@ptd.net>
