Many thanks to all for the help re Flourtown. Now what do I do? My gr grandfather was buried in Old Cathedral Cemetery on Feb. 1, 1896. I obtained this information from his death certificate from the Philadelphia Archives. No Section, No Range, No Lot number, No grave number were on the certificate. Wanting to obtain a "lot survey", in other words, to find out exactly where he is buried, and who else might be buried with him, I obtained from the Catholic Cemeteries office what the phone person refered to as a "genealogy form". The form requires that I fill in all of the above blanks - section, range, lot, grave number, (if known) , or without that specific information my request for a Burial Record cannot be processed. Any records the family may have had regarding the above information disappeared decades ago. Any suggestions on how I would go about getting the required information? Or does your experience tell you that if I just send in the date of burial and his name, that the Catholic Cemeteries Office will pull up the information? Or will I have to plow through the Philadelphia cemetery returns for that date? I can get a film from the LDS but what a daunting task. Since it is the Old Cathedral Cemetery, would I look for "Cathedral Cemetery" or for "Old CAthedral Cemetey"? I'm tempted to send them the $15.00 required and write in "unknown" on section, range, lot, grave number. So, what do I do now? Ruth in GA.

Donna, I only copied the first few pages of the book. It is in the Schwenfelder library in Pennsburg. I have recently learned that my great grandmother was a descendent of one of the early Pastors, Rev John Philip Leydich. His daughter Catherine married Philip Miller. Their son John Miller (1783-1839) married Mary Heebner Nyce. Their son Absalom Miller (1834-1892) is the father of my great grandmother, Emma Jane (Jennie E.) Miller. I know nothing further about Philip Miller other than he married Catherine Leydich. Actually what started me on the genealogy quest was the fact that Absalom Miller and his wife Catharine are buried with Jacob and Mary Ann Hunsberger. However, I cannot find a link between these two families. Hi Ruth! I don't know exactly what your original request was, sometimes I think I may not be receiving all the email on the mailing list. Anyway, I am not aware of any other Flourtown but the one in Montgomery Co. (Zip 19031) You also mentioned a quarry - Corson's Quarry located on Joshua Rd. in Flourtown. Hope this will be some help to you. - Peg
I know there is a 'Flourtown' in Montgomery County, in Upper Dublin Township. However, when I first started hunting for the elusive quarry, I was told that my gr grandfather lived in 'Flourtown' The LDS computer pulled up 'Flourtown' AND as being in Blockley Township in the 17th and 18th century. Blockley was evidently on the main road across the river, and in what is now West Philadelphia. Very near the line with Delaware County. To the best of my knowledge, gr grand lived his adult life in the general Spring Garden district in the mid-1800's The book reference only referred to 'Flourtown' in that context once. And I sat there and read the whole thing on the computer screen!! Does anyone know anything about a 'Flourtown' in the Spring Garden or Blockley areas of Philly? Ruth in GA
Hello Montgo Listers! I am searching for the ancestors of John Benjamin Rishel born in Swedeland, Montg. Co., Sept. 17, 1884 and died April 2, 1949. John married Mary ROCKETT on June 28, 1905. There were three children: E. Ruelma, C. Armour and DeLorme F. I am told John B.'s father was also John and I believe his middle initial was "A". This John married Rachel RISELL. I know John Benjamin had two brothers and three sisters: 1. Benjamin - Left home at 17 and never heard from. 2. William - Married Emily EMERY 3. Ruth - Married Thomas FERRIER 4. Tracey - Married James Howard FRENCH 5. Jessie - Married a HOMSHER If you have come across any of these families in your research, I would be very grateful for any information you could pass along or direct me to. I have not been able to find any information on John Benjamin's ancestors, nor do I know what area his father may have been from prior to his marriage to Rachel. Thank you for your time and interest. Can somenone explain to me what is the difference between "Lutheran Church", "Evangelical Lutheran Church", "Evangelical and Reformed Church" . Not the theology, but are they each different denominations from the other two? And the same question is applied to the varieties of German Reformed ; Dutch Reformed, etc. type churches. and denominations. Would they each have a central depository for records? It would help my [and everyone else] search for birth, baptismal, marriage, burial, cemetery records. Does the Presbyterian Church in America hold the records or -- does each church congregation hold its own records?
Catherine, There are 29 different Lutheran denominations, of which the 2 you mentioned are a part. The Evangelical and Reformed denomination merged with the Congregational Christians in 1956 creating the United Church of Christ. It is possible that includes the German Reformed Church, altho some congregations might not have merged. The Dutch Reformed Church name is Reformed Church of America. Norman Vincent Peale comes from that denomination. There is also a Christian Reformed Church. These 2 are a product of a split. Hope this helps. Mary and Gene, I live (right now) not too far from the TENNIS/LUKENS family cemetery, and recently went there to take photos of the LUKENS names specifically. There are many TENNIS family names from Ambler, not too far from this plot. And I personally know some of the still living Lukens from the area. Some of the stones were hard to read, others weren't' too difficult. If you are interested, I will put the photo's up on a website for you to see them. Vince Summers is also looking into this family (LUKENS) as he is the one I took the photos for. Perhaps he knows the connections you are seeking. There is not one "Lutheran Church." It would be almost impossibe to determine what the actual denominational affiliation of a special church would be without checking with its staff. So in most cases, you will need to contact the church and ask who holds their records. Lutheran churches are especially confusing. The Lutheran denominationas - as well as the Reformed - originally were differentiated by nationality. About 15 years ago most of the liberal Lutheran denominations merged to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The conservative ones - such as the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod - are still separate. I would bet that a "Evangelical and REformed Church" was started by immigrants who came from Germany in the mid- or late 1800s. In the early 1800s, the German Lutheran and Reformed church basically merged and many took that name. >From: "catherine r. buck" <buckr@mindspring.com> >Reply-To: PAMONTGO-L@rootsweb.com >To: PAMONTGO-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [PAMONTGO-L] church denomination differences >Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 16:43:38 -0500 > >Can somenone explain to me what is the difference between "Lutheran >Church", >"Evangelical Lutheran Church", "Evangelical and Reformed Church" . I am looking for Pine Swamp Emanuel as I have been told I have ancestors buried there. Is there anyone on the list that can help me locate this church and or cemetery (address/phone #)? Where might I find the church/cemetery records? I live out of state so I would prefer to have contact directly with the church/cemetery in stead of the Chester Co. Archives or Hist. Soc. unless they are the only ones who have the information I'm seeking. Thanks in advance, Terry

In Abstracts of Philadelphia Wills, there is one George WIDNER, Yeoman of Gwynned, Co. of Philadelphia, Will Book N116. Will dated Mar. 8, 1764, proved Mar. 20, 1764. It names wife Margaret, children Abraham, Elizabeth, and Catharine. Executors are Joseph LUKENS and Jacob WENTZ, and witnessed by Mathias and Abraham LUCKENS. Gwynned Twp.(WIDNER Family) is adjacent to Worcester (WENTZ family) and Towamencin (WEBER family) Twps., and there are many other interactions between the Wentz, Lukens, and Weber families. An Elizabeth WEIDNER married Christian WEBER, Jr. of Towamencin in 1765, just a year after George's death. I have searched the records diligently and find no other Weidner/Widner family in such close proximity to the Weber family. I believe Elizabeth mentioned in George's will is the wife of Christian WEBER. Now I am curious as to the LUKENS connections, Joseph is executor, and Mathias and Abraham witnesses. Usually people who accept this responsibility, especially at a mans's death-bed, which this was, are related somehow. Could Margaret, the wife of George WIDNER, have been a LUKENS? I know Abraham LUKENS, son of Jan, had a daughter Margret born in 1727. I would appreciate hearing from anyone on any of these families, especially the WIDNER/WEIDNER family. Gene Rooks in Gotha, Fl.
