It's been a while since I've posted the Montgomery County families I'm working on, so I thought I might do so in case anyone might see a connection. My 4th-great-grandfather Henry BECKER was b. abt 1758, m. 1790 Anna NEWMAN dau of David Newman, d. 1818 in Towamencin Twp, Montgomery Co, PA. A family Bible identifies Henry's father as "Peter Becker, a native of Europe." Henry was a weaver and was in Skippack Twp before moving to Towamencin Twp. I'm having trouble identifying this Peter Becker definitively in the 1700s, and have not made a definite Newman connection yet. Henry's son John BAKER (1792-1855) m. Ann GODSHALK (1799-1856), served in the War of 1812 and ran a store in Kulpsville eventually taken over by his son Franklin E.G. Baker (1826-1910). Franklin later became a huckster and produce merchant in Philadelphia. Ann's Godshalk line includes STAUFFER/STOVER and CLEMENS ancestors, and ties into the large GODSHALL/GODSHALK/GOTTSCHALL/etc line in Montgomery Co that began with immigrant ancestor Jacob Gottschalk (1670-1763). Although legend takes the Clemens line back to an ancestor executed as one of the Cromwellians who signed the death warrant for King Charles I in England in the 1600s, my correspondence with the College of Arms suggests this is dubious at best. Franklin m. Amanda DANEHOWER (1834-1913), who was b. in Gwynedd and was dau of John S. Danehower (1802-1870) and Sarah KNEEDLER (1807- 1882). I have the Danehower line back to Abraham (1722-1789), but have nothing on the Kneedler line or on any of the Danehower spouses. If anyone sees any possible connections here, I'd love to hear from them! Frank O'Donnell South Pasadena, CA fod@netcom.com

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting and I have an ELIZABETH NAGLE in my family who was born 7/23/1888 in Schuylkill county but in 1900 her parents moved to Pottstown, Pa. She married a Raymond Quigley I believe around 1906 , they had 5 children, and in 1933 she died in Pottstown, Pa. She was the Noble Grand Commander of the HATTIE RITTER LODGE, DAUGHTERS of Rebekah. If anyone has any info on this women or the QUIGLEY name. I am especially interested as to what kind of an organization this lodge was and where it was located. Thank you Sandy
I have a number of HAYHURST buried in Catawissa, Columbia County, Pa. If you want that information, please let me know. Isaac Hayhurst Query (1840) Hi, I'm new to this list (but am on others) and primarily do my research in the Chester County and Philadelphia area. However, I am unable to locate one of my Philadelphia families who claims to have been married in 1840 in Philadelphia by the Rev. Isaac HAYHURST. HAYHURST is a pretty uncommon name. The Reverand HAYHURST was a Baptist minister (my MURRAY family was Baptist) who lived in Upper Merion Township, pg. 397 of the 1850 Census. Does anyone have access to a census index for Montgomery County for 1840 who would be willing to tell me if there is a John MURRAY and/or Mary McSHANE (John's wife) living in the county? There are thousands of MURRAYs, and to make my life miserable, my ancestors had to name their children John, Mary, and Ann. So, I get to have fun and search for John MURRAY, Mary (McSHANE) MURRAY, and their daughter Ann(a) or Ann(ie) Elizabeth MURRAY. Does anyone know what Baptist churches were in existence in 1840 and 1850 in Montgomery County? Better still, does anyone know at what church the Rev. Isaac HAYHURST ministered? I appreciate any help you are able to offer. I checked the archives for the list, but only found one reference to a HAYHURST and nothing about the Rev. himself. Thank you Roland for your information. Yvonne
Jean, I assume you are asking me, since I mentioned a Mohr. However, I am not researching that line, and all I can tell you is that the Calvin Mohr Bertolet I mentioned was the son of Abraham b. Bertolet and Ellen Amanda Mohr. Calvin was born June 3, 1877 in Philadelphia. That was from film #1553748 at the LDS family history center. The submitter of information was Marshall W. McCoy, 416 Summit Ave. #202, Seattle, Wa. 98102, ph. 206-924-3628. I called him to find out about Bertolet and he knew nothing about them, but was searching, I believe, Mohr. That was several years ago, and he may not be there now, but perhaps the film will help. Pat
Hello, I am interested in the MOHR connection. Do you have any information on them? My mother's mother was born Elizabeth Mohr and married my grandfather in Philadelphia in 1901. Her parents were listed as John and Annie Mohr. We know nothing about them. Elizabeth Mohr Bates died of TB in 1908. We are not sure when she was born. One document said July 10, 1879 in Philadelphia, and another document said August 14th 1882, Philadelphia. Her record of death said she was 26 years old in 1908, None of these could be proven. An independent source found an Elizabeth Theodor Mohr born July 10th 1870 to Jacobus and Annie Marie Mohr in Germany, but we cannot prove anything. Any information would be appreciated. 5/14/00 Yvonne, your BERTOLET jumped out at me, since I have never seen it on a list before. I have been researching my husband's family for several years. The surname is Rouleau, but one of Grandpa Rouleau's brothers, Francis Rouleau, lived in Philadelphia from about 1875 until he died in 1916. One of his daughters was Laura Blanche Rouleau, who married Calvin Mohr Bertolet in 1908. They had two children, I recently learned, and one of them is still living. I talked to him for the first time recently. He is in California. I've also learned recently that there is a book about the Bertolet family, and a cemetery north of Philadelphia where Laura and other Bertolet's are buried. Laura's sister, Lillian, married Edward Schmidheiser, and I have talked to her descendants, also, who are (many of them) still around Philadelphia. Any connection here? My grandfather Clarence W. Bertolet was from Royersford Mont. CO. Pa. I have a pin from an organization that he belonged to. There is a bar at the top with a red back ground that has Imp.O.R.M. on it. Attached by two chains is a metal Indian, and on his chest is a porcelain disk that has Imp'd O. R. My father said he remembers as a child that this organization would march in parades with full Indian head dress. He "thinks" that the organization was called the Imperial Order of the Red Man. Hi Everyone, and a Happy Mothers Day to all, I posted a note in late FEB re: my and several friends gggg grandparents James and Mary Ann (???) ELLIS, immigrants to the USA from Cornwall, England, between 1847 and 1849. I received several responses, and one man, Dick Mathews even looked up their probable marriage certificate index info. I purchased a copy from the UK. When I received it, I was a little apprehensive because James was listed as a grocer, not a miner or quarryman, and Mary Ann ROBERTS being the same age as James, when all previous info listed her as 3 years younger. The info below has been updated and is correct as best I know at this time. I have IGI info that James and Mary Ann had 4 children Christened at St Austell, in Cornwall. They were, Elizabeth, b. 15 OCT 1837, Jane, James, and William Henry. Their 5th child, my ggg grandmother, Annie Luxeon/Luxon was b. 26 JUN 1847, in Cornwall, but there in no report of her Christening before the family came to the USA. She may have been born on the pier, because the family next appears in the 1850 US Census in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County, PA, with a new son, George, aged 8/12, and born in the USA. I think they later had another daughter, Mary. In 1854, James applied for US citizenship, and listed his address as Shannonsville, Lower Providence Township, Montgomery County, PA. In 1860, James and George were in the US Census, as residents of Colebrookdale, Berks County, PA. Where was Mary Ann and Mary? Yesterday, the mail brought me the PA death certificate of Annie. Lo and behold, it says her mothers maiden name was Mary Ann LUXON. In a way, Im glad, because of my uneasiness with the ELLIS-ROBERTS marriage, but now I need to ask if LUXON was/is a Cornwall name. I also need to check the IGI to see if I can find her. I do remember that the only James ELLIS - Mary Ann ??? marriages that I saw before were to CURTIS, HUGHES, and MATTHEWS, not even ROBERTS. Any help will be greatly appreciated, Bob Reifsneider Orange Park, FL USA
Yvonne, The initials stand for "Improved Order of Red Men", a fraternal organization. For a time in the late 1800's it was the largest fraternal organization in the US. My grandfather, who was from Philadelphia, was also a member. He lived in the Red Men's home in Cheltenham, PA prior to his death in 1934. The following website has some more information about the Red Men: www.redmenbingo.com. Jim Schoedler MarkleVon@aol.com wrote: > > My grandfather Clarence W. Bertolet was from Royersford Mont. CO. Hi again! I was sent this information, in an attempt to find one of my relations: Phila. Inq. June 5, 1883 Phila. Pa. Phila. Free Lib. COX.-ON Sunday morning, June 3, ELIZABETH, wife of the late Benjamin Cox, aged seventy-eight years. The relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from the residence of her son-in-law, Joseph W. Ambler, No 855 Marshall streeet, this morning, at 11 1/2 o'clock. To proceed to Green Tree, Montgomery Co. for internment. Now I do have COX in PA, and this is a topic I am pursuing at the moment (namely Stephen COX m. Elizabeth N.). But I do not find Benjamin at this time. Yet I read the obit, and see the name AMBLER there! I have two AMBLERs listed! Here they are: Charles A. AMBLER married ? and had a daughter Helen Richardson AMBLER Charles is from Abington. Helen married John "Jack" Wesley FITZGERALD on June 30, 1934 at Abington Presbyterian Church! Now, my FITZGERALD loops back onto my AYRES line, which loops onto my COX line! Odd, yet not rare. Can anyone provide any linkages here for me?
