York County Subject, John Henry Brough, was born in Reading township, Adams County, PA, on Nov 8, 1880 he married Ida M. Young. Paternal Ancestory. Hermamus Bruch, great-great-grandfather of our subject, landed in Phila., Sept 20, 1743 on the ship "Lydia". Hermanus Bruch was a member of the Upper Conewago German Baptist Congregation in 1770, (Mummerts which was established in 1741). On Jan 6, 1786, Hermanus Bruch bought from David Myers of E. Berlin. Hermanus died in 1796 leaving issue. One of his children was Jacob who was the great-grandfather of John Henry Letter of Adminstration were granted May 24, 1796 to Peter Brough , and John Stauffer. The father spelled his name Bruch and the son Brough. Peter Brough died Jan. 23, 1823; the administrators of his estate were Michael Haines and John Miley. Jacob, the great-grandfather of John Henry Brough, spelled his name Brugh. Maternal Ancestory Abraham Arnold, great-grandfather of John Henry Brough, was born Oct. 5, 1761, he died Oct 27, 1827, aged 66y 20d. He married Catharine Close, who when she died was aged 68y 5m 19d, both being at Mummerts Meeting House. (John W. Garret, the former president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, was a brother- in-law) they had 4 children; Jacob, Abraham, Catharine and Elizabeth. Jacob Arnold, grandfather of John Henry Brough, was born June 16, 1791. He married Nancy Kauffman, a d/o Henry Kauffman. Children, Nancy born 1823,who married Jacob LeFevre, and they had two children, (Jacob and Henrietta, both living in Ohio); and Catharine Agnes, born 1826 (mother of J.H.Brough) Jacob Arnold, grandfather died Sept. 16, 1864, he is buried at Mummerts Meeting House. Abraham Arnold, was born March 29, 1797. He married Anna Baker and they had 3 children. He died in Hanover (York County) July 11, 1878. He is buried at Mummerts Meeting House. His wife, Anna, died March 22, 1882. Catharine, sister of Jacob Arnold, married Joseph Grover. They had 4 children, one died young, Nancy who married John Nicholas Kimmel, they lived in VA., they had 2 children (Andrew Jackson and Abraham); Barbara, who married Peter Shaffer of Dillsburg had several children, one of her daughter being married to Michael Bender, of Dillsburg; Abraham, of York Springs, married to Mrs. Mollie Leatshaw, a widow, who was the d./o Jacob Shaffer, of York Springs and had one son. Elizabeth, the sister of Jacob Arnold, married John Grove and had 7 children, Frances, Adam, Abraham, Samuel, John, Catharine, and Susan. Ancestry of Ida M. Young Brough, the wife of John H. Brough, was born May 6, 1861, and is a descendant paternally and maternally to Philip Frederich Eichelberger, the emigrant and head of the Eichelberger Family in America,he being her great-great-great-grandfather and born in Germany, April 17, 1693. On Nov. 11, 1714 he married Anna Barbara Dorness. II. Adam Eichelberger, married Magdalena Bechet in 1761 III. Michael, the 2nd son of Adam, married Catharine Smyser IV.
