    3. Lehigh County History This family, one of the first to settle in Whitehall township is of Swiss origin. The family resided for hundres of years in the city of Basel where in 1372, Hartman Roth was Burgomeister and in 1444, Johannes Roth, also Burgomeister, both Knights rescued the citzens of Basel from a dangerous position in th4 battle of St. Jacob and in 1446 was the envoy of Count Ludwig of the Palatinate to the city of Constance. Peter Roth, Burgomeister of Basel in 1456 was a knight of Jerusalem and was Captain in command of 800 citzens of Basel in the battle of Grandson and over 2,000 foot soldiers and 100 horsemen at the battle of Murten . Jacob Roth was born in 1638 and died 1709, was a famous physician and author of Basel and was rector of the high school in 1691. Daniel Roth, of this family born in 1703 sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, in the ship Hope, with his wfie and two children and his sister Anna Magdalena and her husband John Jacob Schreiber, having left Niederbronn on May 4, 1733, where his sister had been married April 28, 1733. The Roth and Schreiber famies lived for some time in Skippack township township, Montgomery County, but in 1737 moved to Whitehall township. Daniel Roth applied for a warrant for a tract of land on which he had located, situated on the Jordan creek, where the village of Sheresville is now located. Before the warrant was granted to him he was taken sick and died April, 1737, in the same hour his son Peter was born. The warrant was granted May 25, 1737 to his widow, who did not remain long upon the land but with her youngset son removed further south and resided among the Quakers. She died Feb. 25 1757 about 54 years. The land warranted to Daniel Roth was subsequehty granted to John Reinhard Benny, on Aug 10, 1748, died Sept. 1758. His widow, Regina Louis Benny, married Gottfried Knauss who received the land and on June 25, 1761, Daniel Roth and Peter Rhoads, only surviving issue of Daniel Roth, released Gottfried Knauss, all their right, title and interest in the above tract of land. Daniel Roth and his wife, Anna Margaret, had 3 children, Daniel, Jacob, confirmed at Egypt in 1753, and died prior to 1761 and Peter, who having been educated among the Quakers, spelled his name Rhoads, became a prominet Rev. patriot and judge and died at Allentown in 1814. A descendant of this line, Charles S. Roberts, is the writer of several Roth family histories. Daniel Roth, son of Daniel, was born in Switzerland in 1724, after the death of his father he resided with Peter Troxell. He was a member of the Zion Reformed congregation at Allentown and was buried at Allentown. He married Catharine Margaret Miller, who was born in 1739 and died 1813. They had 11 children. 1. Daniel, who was induced as a boy of 17, during his father's absence from home to become a soldier and was killed at the battle of Germantown. 2. Peter was born Oct 21, 1760. 3. Catharine, married George Jacob Roth and had (Catharine, Eva, Hannah, Elizabeth, and Sarah),4.
