Hi Geri, When a person goes thru the census and finds the family one year as Ott and ten years latter as Utt, I feel a genealogist has to present those spellings. They may not be of the same origin in the old country, BUT. Just as there is documentation of the name change from Utt to Utz. Anyway, the ship captains, immigration and census takers spelled the name as they wanted to spell it. Also the family descendants spelled the name as they wished and changed it themselves many times. One of my Ancestors of the Montgomery Co. Hartzell/Hartzel/Hersel to the 13th century Hirzil is a prime example.
