This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bkimminour Surnames: GRUBER - QUICK Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.monroe/1156.2.1.3.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Margie, Your obituary request is a tough one to fill. I use the Easton Public Library to look-up obits published in the Easton Express. This newspaper is presently indexed for obituaries that appeared in the newspaper from 1911 to the present. For Monroe County obituaries one needs to search the Jeffersonian or the Democrat. Copies of both newspapers are available for viewing at the Monroe County Historical Association or East Stroudsburg University. Lacking an exact date of death makes searching for an obituary a daunting task. We're looking at a potential span of 20 years in which to locate Anna M. GRUBER's obituary. A cautionary word; obits from this period and locale were most times very brief and only mentioned the decedent's name, age, what they died from, date of death and maybe a spouse's name. I looked at cemetery records for the GRUBER name. I did locate Peter GRUBER interred at St. Paul's/Jones Cemetery in Paradise Township. Peter was born on January 13, 1833 and died January 31 1912. Nearby in the same cemetery is Stella M. QUICK GRUBER who was born November 20, 1859 and died October 28, 1888. Also identified at this same cemetery is Elizabeth GRUBER wife of Simon and Peter's mother. Elizabeth was born in 1804 and died in 1872. Apparently information about Elizabeth came from a local undertaker's burial records but a gravestone was not located at this cemetery. This is about all I can offer you at this time. I hope it is of some help to you. Ben Kimminour Bethlehem and Bushkill, PA Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Wildrick in question is probably not the son of Michael and Dorothy Wildrick, since the list of children for John H. and Mary Harris do not match at all with what we have found for John H. By the way, Roy Wildrick had one more daughter, Nettie, who married William Pfeifer. Nettie's obit might be available when you look for Roy's - 2-25-1980 and William's also, 1-10-1927. Many thanks. Networking between fellow researchers is so important when we are trying to locate specific facts and are not in the area of research. (I'm in California). I would much appreciate the obit from the Easton Library and would be happy to reimburse your cost. The next step is to identify John H. and who his parents were to see how he fits into the Wildrick family as delineated in the very detailed genealogy published in Blairstown, 1951. If he is the son of Michael Wildrick (Marksboro) and Dorothy Brands, then the ancestry of Roy can be traced back to the original John Wildrick, 1707. I will eagerly await your next message. Many thanks. Dorothy Scott, Grass Valley, CA and Tucson, AZ Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bkimminour Surnames: WILDRICK - SMITH - BRUGLER - OAKES - SNYDER Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.monroe/1156.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello D. Scott, I think I may be able to assist with your Roy WILDRICK puzzle. You may have already discovered that there were two John H. WILDRICKs in this region of PA and NJ. This is the reason that the names of their respective children don't match. I believe that John H. WILDRICK of Smithfield in Monroe County was married twice. First he was married to Elizabeth and second to Mary, mother of Roy WILDRICK. The facts: John H. WILDRICK was born about 1825 in either Warren or Sussex County, NJ. A John Wildrick appears on the 1860 census with the HOWELL family in Frelinghuysen Twp. Warren County, NJ. John H. WILDRICK married unknown Elizabeth about 1854 in Green Twp. Sussex County, NJ. This marriage date is based upon the birth of their first child. Their five children include: Clinton 5; Sarah M. 4; Elvira C. 3; Mary J. 1; and Eliza 1 month. A parallel story: Andrew B. SMITH age 40 of Stroudsburg, Monroe County, PA married Mary age 28 around 1856. Their children were Comodore age 3 and Filmore age 1. Andrew died on March 3, 1862 and is interred at Zion's Cemetery in Middle Smithfield Twp. We can imagine that Andrew was either killed during the Civil War or died from injuries sustained in the war. Back to the facts and the suppositions: Sometime before 1870 Elizabeth WILDRICK died. John H. WILDRICK takes Mary SMITH, widow of Andrew as his wife. On the 1870 census for Hardwick Twp. Warren County we have John H. WILDRICK 45, Mary 40, Clinton, and Lizza 10. The 1900 census shows that Roy WILDRICK was born in Sept. of 1870. Since the census for 1870 was taken in July of that year we can suppose that Mary WILDRICK was pregnant with Roy. But we have children missing. Gone are Sarah M., Elvira C., and Mary J. WILDRICK. Also missing are Commodore and Fillmore SMITH. If we search the census for that year we can locate those children with other families. For whatever reason, they were placed with other families, a not uncommon occurrence. On the 1880 census for Smithfield twp. we have John WILDRICK 55, Mary E. 45, Roy 12 and Harriet 9. Also in the household are Commodore SMITH 22, Filmore SMITH 20 and Laura BRUGLER. These three children are identified as John WILDRICK's stepchildren. I haven't located Harriet in subsequent censuses. She has either died or married. In 1880 Clinton WILDRICK 25 is living in Kingston, Luzerne County, PA. Lizza WILDRICK has married a man named OAKES. Later, Clinton WILDRICK appears on the 1900 census, the 1920 census living with Elizabeth OAKES, his sister, and finally on the 1930 census at the Monroe County Home in Hamilton Twp. Clinton has remained single. >From the obituary index for the Easton Express at the Easton Public Library I've found the following: Roy WILDRICK - 10-11-1932 page 8 Elizabeth OAKES - 12-31-1920 page 10 Roy WILDRICK's family: Florence E. WILDRICK - 10-2-1964 page 7 Walter Graydon WILDRICK - b. Nov. 30, 1898 d. April 24, 1997 at Reading PA 4-25-1997 page B-5 Stanley M. WILDRICK - b. June 24, 1903 d. May 1985 at Lyon Nevada 5-5-1985 page B-4 Verna M. WILDRICK - b. Sept 18 1896 d. Nov. 1978 in Stroudsburg - married name is SNYDER Interestingly, Commodore SMITH is shown on the 1920 census living only a few households away from Elizabeth WILDRICK OAKES in Stroudsburg. I'll be at the Easton Library within the next few days. At that time I plan to look at what I think is Roy WILDRICK's obit and hopefully establish that the above scenario is correct. Well, I've rambled enough. I hope this potentially solves your Roy WILDRICK puzzle.
