polk twp., monroe co., pa. the early settlers of this twp. were chiefly germans, and many of their descendants still reside here upon the ancestral estates. john kunkle, a descendant of one of these famiies is one of the most influential men in this twp. nathan serfass resided on the farm originally cleared and ownd by his grandfather,john serfass. jacob kresge, the oldest living man in the twp., resided on his father's homestead with his grandson. reuben kresge, until recently, was the owner of the oldest property in the twp, which descended to him from his father, george kresge. the precise date at which the 1st settlements were made cannot be obtained. a german, by the name of philip shupp, is said to have been the 1st settler. he located 1 mile west of where salem ch., now stands. he had several daus., and 1 son. the son left the twp before he was grown up. george kresge married one of the daus and took the homestead. they had 2 children, philip and samuel. the mother died and the father took a 2nd wf. catharine serfass, d/o john. children; thomas, james, joel, david, reuben, sallie and katie. thomas moved to luzerne co. james to chestnuthill, joel at kresgeville and the father of 4 children,-charles a. henry, tilghman and emmaline married james berlin. david died he was the father of 10 children viz.( peter and josiah of chestnuthill, absalom of penn argyl, northampton co., catharine married william small, sallie married melchoir silfiese and elizabeth.). reuben lives in the twp. and is the father of 2 children, (alfred and catharine). sallie ! wf of john kunkle and katie wf of john gregory. conrad dotter came from buck co and located at what is now called dottersville. john george kunkle was the first settler at kresgeville. he had 14 children; elizabeth married george serfass, katie married a knecht, married married solomon christman, bevy married john slafer, susan married john smith, margaret married john winters, christina married paul beer, sallie married george kresge, george, abraham, peter, joseph, adam and john. john, the youngest son, married sallie kresge, d/o george and they had 10 children; katie married sebastian kresge, william, james, jacob, geoge, david, sarah married mahlon serfass, mary ann married reuben kunkle, ella married pierce kresge and emma married jerome serfass. lehigh co. history george kunkel lived for a time in lower saucon twp., lehigh co. he married sarah dotterer. they moved to polk twp., monroe co. they assissted in bulding the pleansant valley ch. he died in 1855, age 82. children; abraham, george, elizabeth married joseph serfass, who had 21 children, joseph, barbara married aaron shaffer, kate married abraham christman, dinah married adam beer, mrs. winten, susannah burned to death when she was 18, mrs. smith, peter, adam, john and sallie married george kresge. adam kunkel, s/o george was born in lower towamensing twp. carbon co., dec. 22, 1812. he died nov. 25, 1888, age 75y 11m 3d. on may 10, 1835, he married mary berger of gilberts, monroe co. she was the d/o david berger, born nov. 30, 1816 and died may 18, 1889, in her 73rd year. children; joseph, george, diana, sallie, katie, adam, reuben and stephen. john kunkel, s/o george was born feb. 14, 1815 and died dec. 7, 1886. he married sallie kresge, she was born sept. 18, 1819. children, kate, william, james, jacob, george, david, sarah, mary a., ellen and emma. abraham frantz, a farmer, lived in north whitehall, and is buried at egypt ch. he and his wf., had the following children; rebecca married henry zerass, louisa married william mille, flora married lewis miller, eliza married jacob steckel, celinda married solomon miller, elmira married levi kleckner, olvier lived in whitehall and henry b. henry b. frantz lived in south whitehall. member of the ref. ch., and is buried at egypt. he married 1st to a miss ritter and had no children. he married 2nd to amanda zerfass and had children; sylvester, martha married james kohler, pauline married herman schroeder, abraham married annie dreisbach, ezra married mary e. young and ada married william faust. gilbert-monroe co. peter s. hawk, h/o julia ann (strohl) and also elizabeth (bond) hawk, and s/o nicholas and catharine (shupp) hawk. april 1, 1816-nov. 15, 1892 elizabeth (bond) hawk, w/o peter s. hawk and d/o jacob and susanna bond april 27, 1825-april 15, 1901 lehigh co. history hawk family near kresgeville, monroe co., pa., lived conrad hawk. he died in the year 1860. he married margaret fisher. the parents of conrad hawk came from wurtemberg, germany. conrad hawk and margaret (fisher) hawk, had sons and no daughters, joseph who lived at kunkletown, john of wilkes barre, george of monroe co., conrad (who was feeble minded) and michael. michael hawk, was born april 11, 1806, lost his life when one of the limbs fell down on him and killed him, on nov. 15, 1850, age 44, he is buried at kresgeville. his wife catharine serfass, is buried in union cem., at allentown. she was the d/o joseph serfass.. he and his family were members of the evangelical ch. children; samuel, nathan, matilda, w/o w.h. diefenderfer, theresa, w/o david schoudt, jacob, linford, cecelia, w/o reuben schmale, and lived at allentown, william of wilkes barre, hannah, w/o henry smith, mrs. james diehl, sarah died single, edwin died at weatherly as a young man. Moved from Tamaqua to Tobyhanna in the 1920's. Daughter Rose married Michael Meno of Tobyhanna. Would like to know where Wash and Anna Ferki are buried. 1930 census shows them living along the Lackawanna Trail.
