    1. [PAMONROE] Petition for Smithfield Twp
    2. Marie Robinson
    3. Does anyone by chance have a copy of the second petition to the Bucks County Commissioners for the creation of a new Smithfield Township, different in size apparently from the creation of Smithfield in 1742. The inhabitants petitioned in 1746 for a new Smithfield Township, but apparently the June 1748 petition was for a smaller township than petitioned for in 1746, and was approved by the court. What I'm looking for is the "legal description" of the township. Leon Young sent me this excellent URL on Smithfield Township: http://www.monroeco911.com/smithhistory.htm It contains the description for the township proposed in 1746, but not the description from the 1748 petition. Thanks, Marie Robinson

    3. My William and Christiana were born in Monroe county circa 1807-1808. They are in the 1850 census for Jackson Twp. with among others, my GG Grandfather, Jacob Young VanBuskirk. By 1860, William is missing, presumed dead. But in reality is in Minnesota by 1872 being gored to death by a bull. Of course, he and Christiana have by then begun to use her maiden name and all the children with them also use the name Young. Except, Jacob and Nicholas who use the VanBuskirk name in the Civil War and return to Pennsylvania, settling in Barrett Twp. Now, Nicholas after a time begins to use the alias Nicholas Bates. Confused yet? Also traveling with them was a Samuel and Susanna Young. This summer past one of the Minnesota Youngs came to visit PA to try to unravel some of the mystery and their true last name. If you send your e-mail address off list, I will forward what I have from them. Perhaps you hold pieces of the puzzle? ----- Original Message ----- From: "L. The Van Buskirk's of PA> WI married into the Arnold family (also from Monroe Co.PA, of course) I would bet all these folk are connected. Where in MN did Wm get gored by the bull? I live in MN and am close the History center in St. Paul. All sorts of great newspapers are on file there. I would be interested in pursuing this connection-hopefully you are too. Let me know. You can reach me @ [email protected] **Leon, I would also be interested in getting actual copies of the church records you have on the Jung's. Would be happy to pay for any expenses. I hadn't heard of Tunkhanna Creek before but found this: http://home.ptd.net/~mexorob/T.html It also describes the older boundaries of Chestnuthill and you can see from it that all of the modern day "west end" is pretty well covered. I take it this would mean south of Tobyhanna, but by the western boundary of "Towamensing" state in that site I could see potentially that areas close to the Carbon/Monroe must have been covered. I do not know if the names of the Lehigh river are the same or not, but we may not just call it all the Lehigh now. However I suspect the modern Pocono Pines area may be what the Tunkhanna refers to which could well make the swampy area south of Tobyhanna equal to "Long Pond". Geoff Crawford [email protected]

    2. Marie Robinson
    3. I don't know specifically what "Shellalah" stands for but beginning in 1766, naming tracts was required when the land was patented.  The two Receiver Generals and Thomas Penn, at the time, thought it would help the record keeping in the collection of annual quitrents to follow a tract by its name rather than trying to follow the owners or new owners of a tract.  I'm mapping Chesnut Hill Township--if you could send me the metes and bounds information (legal description which includes the words "degrees" and "perches"), I could show you what the tract looked like and, if I have it already on my map, maybe the name of the family members of the original warrantee or patentee would give you a clue to the name "Shellalah." Was Nicholas Young the original warrantee? Marie. >-----Original Message----- >From: L.
