Early settlers_ The exact dates of the first settlements in these regions cannot be obtained. As nearly as can be asertained the first settler in Tobyhanna township were Leonard Stoddt, George Sox, William Hessler, Ezra Hays, Andrew Eschenbach, Jacob Blakeslee, Ira Winters and Robert Newell. Andrew Eschenbach came from Carbon County and settled in the township in 1809. He had 10 children; Andrew, David, John, Nathaniel, Thomas, Joseph, Samuel G., and Benjamin. The first Andrew was accidently killed as a young man. Jacob was killed at the battle of Antietam, Benjamin lived in Tobyhanna Mills, Nathaniel married Ellen Scott, and he was the father of 10 children; John W., Albert, Sarah, Lydia, James, Mary, George, Eliza, Thomas and Elizabeth. Andrew married Lydia Bond and lived in Tobyhanna. Hannah married A. Berry and lived in Tobyhanna. Eshenbach, Anna Catharine, nee Omensetter, 1757-1832, born in Phila., she was married ih 1778 to David Eshenbach who died in 1823 Eshenbach, Anna Maria nee Bossert , 1729-1797, born at Oley, She was married twice, first to Andrew Eshenbach, they had 10 children, and then she married 2nd to John Bernts. After his death she moved to Bethlehem to live with her daughter, the wife of George Huber Eshenbach, David, 1755-1823, born in Oley, the son of Rev. Andrew Eshenbach, who in the year 1742 with several other candidates was ordained a minister of the Gosepel, at Oley. In 1778 he married A.C. Omensetter and applied for confirmation in 1822 Eschenbach, Samuel,of Tobyhanna, Monroe County, PA., Andrew Eschenbach, his grandfather, lived near Phila., and was living there during the Rev. in which his brother John took part. He married Susan Fink, children; David, John, Nathaniel, Andrew, Joseph, Thomas, Samuel, Polly. Andrew Eschenbach, father, was born in Allentown, Northampton county, moved to Tobyhanna, Monroe county, he married Lydia Bond. She died in 1881, aged 73, he died in 1886, aged 83. Children; Howard and Margaret. Two Andew Eshenbachs came to America (according to the PA Archives) one in 1740 and the other in 1744. The former a native of Germany, came in the ship "Friendship", landing at Phila., Sept. 23, 1740, made settlement in Colebrookdale township, Berks county, where it is know Andrew Eshenbach was located in 1752. To him and hiis wife, Sarah Benninger where born the following children; Edwin killied in the Civil war, Reuben, lived in Lehghton, Ephraim, resided at Packerton, Lovina married John Weiss, Mary married Isaac Butz, Julia married Cornelius Peters, Helena married Geolrge Wolf. Reuben M. son of George, was born at Lizzard Creek valley, in 1845. He was a blacksmith and came to Catasaqua during the Civil war, he died in 1904.His wife Ellen George, d/o Jacob and Elizabeth George, of Ashfield. Children; Charles M., George, of Cherryville, Bessie, married Charles Iskey of South Easton, Alexander of Allentown, Omrod, Amanda, of Newark, NJ., N.J., Sophia, Irvin, and Francis Charles M. Rehrig, was born at Mauch Chunk, Jan 29, 1866. He married Emma Fritz, d/o Daniel E. Fritz, of Ashfield. He died May 18, 1913 age 47. Member of St. Andrew"s Reformed Church, buried at Greenwood cemetery. Dr. J. Edward Rehig, was born at Mauch Chunk Aug 20 1884. His father John C., was the son of Lafayette Rehrig, and was born at East Mauch Chunk, Sept. 1, 1857. He married Hanna M. Schock, d/o William H. and Hannah (Miller) Schock Children ; Minerva married to Wilson K Thomas, William of Phila,. J. Edward and Ruth M who married H.C. Dillard, of East Bangor. J. Conrad Rehrig, a native of PA., his father having come to this country at a very early day, landing at Germanton, and settling in that part of the state. He served in the Revolution after which he married and emigrated north of the Blue Ridge, and settled in Lizzard Creek Valley between Pennsville and the Reuben Stiegerwalt farm. He was of the founders of thee Benn Salem Church. He is buried in the graveyard of the Benn Salem Church. He had 11 children, Martin, Daniel, John, Jacob, Jonas, Michael, Conrad, George, William, and a daughter Elizabeth, who became the wife of Jacob Stiegerwalt. Martin, the eldest son settled at Balliet Forge, where he died in 1860. His children. Solomon, Jacob, Charles, Powell, Paul, Elizabeth who married Jacob Lentz, Lydia who married John Liebergood, Rebecca Solomon died in 1854, leaving a wife and children, who later moved away. Jacob moveed to Slatebrook. Charles and Powell settled in Lizard Creek. Charles the son of Charles is an engineer and lived on his father's fram. George and Henry, sons of Charles lived near Bowman's Station. Reuben, the son of Powell, lived on his father's farm. Paul also settled in the valley, where his son Reuben now lived. Of the other sons of Conrad, Jacob lived in Towamensing, Conrad settled on the homestead and died single. Daniel emigrated West, John settled in the township. Owen Rehrig, of Lehghton, is a son.
