John Weistzel was the first merchant of Sunbury. He was married twice, first to Tabitha Morris, d/o John Rose Morris, by whom they had 4 children, John, Paul, Charlotte and Mary. He married second to Elizabeth Susanna, d/o Paul Lebo of Lancaster, and sister to Henry Lebo. They had 3 children, George, Elizabeth and Tabitha. John Weitzel brother was Casper Weitzel, an attorney of Northumberland county, was born in 1749, Lancaster County. Admitted to practice in Sunbury, 1772, died 1782 "Wetzel" Family John Wetzel, the great-grandfather, was an early settler in Lower Mahanoy township, Northumberland County, his wife's maiden name was Leffler. Children; Peter, who lived in Snyder county, John who lived in Lower Mahanoy, Jeremiah, Abby who married Daniel Hepner, Mrs. John Howard, Mrs. Mattern, and Mrs John "Wentzel" "Wetzel Family", Northumberland County One Hans Martin Wetzel arrived on the ship "Brittania", 1731, his age was listed at age 31. His wife was Maria Barbara, who was age 33. On the same ship were the following, probably children; Hans Martin Wetzel aged 6; Nicholaus Wetzel, aged 4; Katherina Wetzel, aged 3. There is also the names of Maria Barbara Wetzel, who may have been a sister to the pioneer. John Jacob Wetzel came on the "Charming Nancy", 1737 Philip Wetzel. came on the "Davy", 1738 Hans Martin settled in the territory now Lehigh County. Six years later he was followed by John Jacob Wetzel, who located in Hereford township in Berks County, only several miles distant: and these two, in 1738, were followed by Philip Wetzel. That a kinship existed between these pioneers cannot be doubted, and it is very possible that they were brothers__ and another group of three brothers, found among the eigrant ancestors of so many American families. In the list of early settlers in the region of Emaus, Lehigh Co., PA, in the section of Milford and Longswamp townships, whose name with place of birth appear on the original church records of the Emaus Moravian Church, was that of Catharine Wetzel, who was from "Uppa" Mannheim, in the Palatine. According to family tradition, and old Wetzel had settled somewhere on the Ohio River, and had a number of children, among them were John, George, and Louis. (Please don't ask me about Louis, I've read so many stories, and I do think, the last two were right, and not flattering). Federal Census Report, 1790 records these Wetzels as heads of families. George Wetzel, wife and 5 sons, 2 daughters all the sons under 16, Longswamp. Philip Wetzel lived in Hereford township, wife. two sons under 16, three daughter. John Wetzel, two sons over 16, one son under 16, and two daughters; he lived in Macungie township, Northampton (now Lehigh) John Wetzel Jr., lived in the same township as his father, and he and his wife had two daughters.
