Hi, I received the pension files for Elijah Strunk. I have been trying to find out the name of his birth parents. The mystery of Elijah is that he used the surname ACE for 20 years, switching back to Strunk in the 1920's. The reason is he lived with the John Ace family of Middle Smithfield Twp.Pa. John Ace can be found on the census record 1860 John 47, Elizabeth 17, John 5/12, Elijah Strunk 11. Since Elijah did not know his date of birth and the dept of interior decided in 1914 that his date of birth would be 8 Sep. 1845. His birth age in 1860 would be 15, I figured more like 14. When he joined the Civil war he would have been 18. John Ace's wife Elizabeth her age 17 in more like 20. In 1880 Barrett Twp., Monroe co., Pa. we find John Ace 67, Elizabeth 34, John 11, Aura ? 13, Sarah 4, William H. 6, Hannah 3.They lived 1 house over from Elijah & Barbara Strunk. In one of Elijah letter to the war Dept he tells them his father was Benjamin Strunk and his mother Betsy Ace, and when he was about 1 1/2 he lived with John Ace, Later he tells them he was 6 or 8 when he moved in with John Ace. So, who is the Benjamin Strunk that married the Betsy/Elizabeth Ace ? Elijah insists he was born in Middle Smithfield Twp. Why did Elijah live with John Ace? If Elijah is correct in saying his mother was Betsy Ace, john could have been taking in his sisters child. If Elijah & Elizabeth were sister & brother, and there father died (Benjamin) Elizabeth could have decide to marry John Ace and Elijah came along with the package. Face facts what was a 20 year old female with out parents and a little brother going to in the 1850's ?There was not a large age difference between Elijah and John Ace wife Elizabeth abt 6 years. So I am not considering her as his mother, but I could consider her as his sister. I have to say that would be rather weird John Ace marrying his niece, but not unheard of. She could have been from a different Ace line, or maybe Betsy Ace Strunk was not her mother.Since Elijah was not very educated, he could have confused, John Ace's wf Elizabeth as the wf. of B! enjamin Strunk. This is probable, because he didn't know who his mother was. It is also possible that John Ace was married before. In 1850 census M. Smithfield Twp. I find a John Ace 36, Margaret 38, Caty Ann 15, Henry Ace 26. Living next to them Joseph 23, Margaret 23, Mary 1. The interesting thing about this is next to the Ace family is Jacob Everet. The reason I think this is the correct John Ace is because Elijah Strunk married Barbara Everett. Jacob Everet is not her father but could be her grand father. Jacob Everet's wf. name was Barbary. So there you have it folks. I am open for any comments or suggestions. I am looking for any one who has a loose Benjamin Strunk d. abt 1845-1847 ? that is if Elijah is right in that he was about 1 1/2 years of age when he went to live with John Ace. I am checking the Orphan Ct. Records next. Thanks Lily Kintner

Hi, my e-mail to you came back. There are two "Gerhart/Gearheart/Gerhart families, one from Monroe county and one from NJ that settled in Northumberland County the same with Gerhard/Gerharts. The Sebastian from the Rev., was an English Miller, who family married into the French Millers, the German Millers, and yes even the Irish Millers. Having jumped in on this note a little late, I am wondering if this is the same Henry Kintz that you all are interested in: Henry Kintz, b. 24 June 1812, bp. 20 Sep 1812. He married Mary Edinger 12 Feb 1843. I believe he had a son, Steward. Not sure if there were any more children or not. Henry Kintz was the son of Melchior Kintz and Christina Fliet. There is some tie to the Altemose family through Anthony Kintz, Henry's grandfather, but I am not sure what that connection is. If this is the family you are interested in, I will be glad to exchange info with you. Patrice Houck Schadt

Memoradum Concerning the case of Joseph Romig. Joseph Romig, before and at the begining of the late war, lived reputably at his family upon a tract of land in Macungie twp., in the county of Northampton which befonged to his father, Frederick Roming, who had permitted him to live upon and cultivate the same in the same manner as he had given other parts of his lands to his other sons, but the property always remained in him the father, which he never conveyed or alienated or intended to convey durning his life. In the years of 1778 and 1779 Joseph Romig having been enemies in his neihborhood, was accused of being inimical to the war again the Brithis and charge with Sundry Crimes and although his innocence was clearly proved, John Wetzel, then a Lt. of the County of Northampton persecuted him with unrelenting perseverance so that he was obliged to leave home and retire beyond the Blue mountians, where he lead a miserable life for some time, but returning home and it being known, Mr. Wetzel sent a guard to bring him dead or alive, which order has been proved before Magistrates. Joseph hearing of it and wishing to retire, had the misfortune to meet with his pursures and to wound one of the guards so sent after him and this made it necessary for him to abscond. In going towards the army he was taken prisoner by a party of English near the billet and brought to Phila. Romig, Frederick, was born at Ittlingen near Heilborn, April 24, 1713, and baptized in the Lutheran faith. On Christmas Day, 1737 he married Catharine Siegfried, d/o John and his wife Elizabeth. She was born in Oley, Berks County, Nov 14, 1719, baptized Moravian by Pastor Philip Wuster. Mr. Romig became a Moravian in 1764 at Emaus. He died July 6, 1783, and together with his wife, was buried in the old family homestead. Children; John Christphor, Joseph, born March 27, 1740, Adam, Elizabeth, Susanna, married Heinrich Egner, Frederick, Catharine, married Johannes Knauss, Magdalena, married Daniel Peter of Oley, Henrich, Anna Maria, married Samuel Butz, Jacob, Margaretha married Peter Butz. The Romigs of the Lehigh Valley come from the old Palatine family which spelled the name Roemisch. The name indicates Roman origin and it has been suggested that the family descends from a Roman soldier, who perhaps had accompanied Caeser on one of his expeditions against the Germans or from a soldier stationed at one time of the Roman garrisions, who fell in love with a fair Germanic maiden and cast his lot with her people. John Adam Romich the immediate ancestor of the Romigs of Lehigh County was born Feb 3, 1689, at Ruedenstein in the Palatinate, when he was baptized by a local Lutheran pastor. His was the s/o George Wendel Romich and his wife Marguerite nee Herner. In 1712 John Adam married Agnes Marguerite Bernhardt and resided at Ittlingen, near Heilbron. They had 5 sons and 4 daughters.
