Main St., Elkin, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at Elkin Healthcare Center. He was born in Mifflin County, Pa. on Sept. 14, 1926, to the late Elmer Fisher Charles and Mildred Mae Patton Charles. He graduated from Lewistown High School in 1944 and Lenoir Rhyne College in 1950. He served in World War II United States Army 82nd Airborne. He taught and coached for 41 years and also worked for Elkin Recreation Center for many years. He was a member of the Elkin School Board, the Board of Elections for Surry County and was chairman for some of that time. He was also a member of The First United Methodist Church of Elkin and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Betty Charles Haag, Adaline Charles Fluke and Mary Charles Wolfe. He is survived by his loving wife Betty Clemmer Charles of the home; five children, John H. Charles Jr. and wife Becky of Elkin, Cathy Charles Sidden and husband John of State Road, Carol Charles Steadman and husband Ned of Brevard, Stephen Michael Charles of Clemmons and Ann Charles Scott and husband Roger of Elkin; eight grandchildren, Rebecca Charles Isaac and husband Mitch, Christopher Caton Charles and wife Beth, Brian Charles Sidden and wife Mandy, Wendy Sidden Riddle and husband Matt, Amy Elizabeth Steadman and Charles Aaron Steadman, Kelly Michelle Scott and Lindsay Ann Scott; and great-grandchildren, Charlie Isaac, Nathaniel Riddle, Leara Riddle, Sean Sidden and Bryson Sidden. The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 25, at Hollywood Cemetery in Elkin by Dr. Chuck Baker. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor' s choice.
