In the 1860 Milford, Juniata census is the Abraham and Elizabeth Kauffman family with son george, aged 15. By the 1870 Milford census, Abraham (born abt 1810 in Pa) is gone (parobably died) and all the kids have been farmed out in Juniata county. Joseph and Stewart are together and working on a farm. Lizzie is living/working with another family and has a 9 mos old son Harry. C. Kauffman (this time listed as a male, so don't know if it it Christian or as in 1860 Christiana) is with Tillie (Matilda) and Maggie (Margaret). Immediately next door is the Andrew and Tillie Bossinger family (I think Tillie has been enumerated twice - once next door at her sister's) and with them is widow 'Betsy' Kauffman (Betsy is a nickname for Elizabeth), aged 51 and with daughter Susan (aged 7, so born abt 1863, so Abraham died no earlier than 1862). George is enumerated with his future wife's family. By the 1880 census, elizabeth Kauffman (Betsy ! in the last census) is still with the Andrew Bossinger family, but Andrew is now a widower, so wife Tillie (Matilda) died sometime between 1877 and 1880 (last child is 3 in 1880). Also in the 1880 Milford census, Christian is indeed a male and is now married coincidentally to another Matilda. He has a 10-yr-old son Harry which I suspect is really Lizzie's son Harry who was 9 months old in the 1870 census. Anyway, that's my take on your family and it sure seems to fit. What do you think?
