Good Day, By ANY chance does anyone know where one can go to find records of who/whom is buried and where one is buried in a cemetery when there are no markers? Does each cemetery keep records? Who is in charge of the cemeteries? Doesn't someone somewhere need to know who is buried where in a cemetery . How do they know when there are no listings (so I am told) what plots are empty and, what ones are in use? ( not a very nice way to word it but, trying to get information on these cemeteries ) Does the county have records.........can these plots without markers be sold again and re - used ? Why shouldn't the Church's....and or other Cemeteries be made to have records for who is buried where ? Why doesn't each county keep records ? It is hard for me to believe that one goes to a Cemetery and ask's where a certian person is buried that the cemeteries do not have maps with the plot numbers and, whom is buried where ......WHO do you ask? WHERE do you get this information? Thank you kindly for your time ! Sincerely, Bea [email protected]
Bea: I have a copy of Mifflin County Cemetery Records - not at my fingertips right now but it is about 1,000 pages, was done about 1974 and was published by the Mifflin County Historical Society. I do lookups and will do your Bollingers this afternoon - am involved at the moment in another project. Quickly though I found Bollingers in Mt.Rock Cemetery,St.Johns Lutheran Methodist, Linn Memorial Methodist, Wayne Methodist and one other. I'll get back to you later today - Marge in Eugene, OR From: Bea Rutherford [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, January 15, 2005 2:35 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [PAMIFFLI] Cemetery Records ! Hi Bea, There are church cemeteries private cemeteries (farm cemeteries would come under this heading, I suppose) county cemeteries nonprofit cemetery associations cemeteries run as a business (can be private or corporate) . . . did I miss any, folks? Knowing what kind of cemetery you're looking at would be a good first step in figuring out who has the records. I'm not sure what each state's laws are or were governing interments - some states probably still have no permit requirements, or even require interment licenses or interment in a licensed cemetery. The Q & A page for the Pennsylvania Cemetery Funeral Association website is at http://pcfaonline.com/commonquestionsC.shtml and may answer some of your questions. Mifflin county cemeteries are listed here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pamiffli/cemeteries.html The list was compiled by the previous Mifflin county USGenWeb county coordinators, and with permission of the Mifflin County Historical Society, the pages of their book, Mifflin County Cemeteries, have been linked on this page. The index itself is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~pamiffli/mchs-cems.html Also check the cemetery transcription page here: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/mifflin/cemet.htm My hope is that lots of folks who live in Mifflin county got digital cameras for Christmas and will be willing to go out and photograph tombstones when spring comes, so we can have a Mifflin Archives tombstone photo project like Blair Archives'. Ed Bratton has already contributed a number of cemetery photos, as have several other folks in the past. (I live over 700 miles away from Mifflin county, so I doubt I'll be able to participate in a Mifflin county tombstone photography project.) Two wonderful online cemetery projects online are http://interment.net/ and http://findagrave.com/ If you do not see what you need any of these places, check the MCHS folks to see if they can advise you. http://www.rootsweb.com/~pamchs/home.htm Anybody who can add to this information, please do! Judy, I am in speaking of many many cemeteries..........I have searched my books through and through...........my pet gripe is this...... When one does not hae a grave marker on their grave (for many reasons) how can you find them? I have been told bt several cemeteries that there is not a record kept or they can not find where one is buried.............NOW, how do they know where to bury the ones that pass away and , where not to bury them..... Someone has to know what plots are occupied and which are not........wouldn't you think ? I am speaking about all cemeteries........no one seems to be able to answer this.......maybe I am not asking it in the right manner??? Bea-- The fact is, in many, many cases, cemeteries a long time ago didn't keep records, the records have been lost, or the records have been destroyed by fire, flood, etc., etc. It's simply a reality. Here's how they know if someone is buried there (or remains are present): they can probe a plot with a rod, or (the more technical solution) do ground-penetrating radar to show if the ground has been disturbed. An old city-owned and -maintained cemetery in my county has recently done the latter to verify which plots are available for sale. It knew its records were in poor shape. And in Teller County, the two largest cemeteries aren't owned by anyone or any entity. If you want to bury someone, you have a hole dug and bury him. No plots are sold. I assume they look for non-depressed ground and do a probe when deciding where to bury someone. Hi again Bea, I've been browsing around the net looking at PA funeral and cemetery regulations and found this: http://members.aol.com/Judiciary/9.html I do know that all active cemeteries are required to keep a register, card file or database of burials. They have a plot map and a record of who is buried in each plot. Take a look at the map of Oakridge: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/blair/1picts/cemeteries/oakridge/oakridge-map.jpg You can see that each section and lot are coded, and the sexton (gravedigger) of the cemetery has those records available when there is a new interment scheduled. At each cemetery there are regulations about how many adults may be buried in a single lot. In many cemeteries, provision is made for burials at 6' and 12'. In the specific case of Wayne cemetery, have you called the church and asked about their records? It may be the case that the MCHS Cemeteries of Mifflin County book was prepared from a reading of the extant tombstones and not from the records kept by the Methodist church. I don't own the book, so I don't know if the preface lists the sources used in preparation of the book. Perhaps somebody else who owns the book could check it for that information. Not sure I've answered your question or even that there's a definitive answer to your question. Judy, I have found one thing that I am SURE is true..........alot of these folks do not want to be bothered so, I have offered to pay one or two of them and, they could NOT wait to meet my husband and I to show us what we wanted to know! My Mother has a sister that died when she was very young...........Mother wanted to know what plot she was buried in and where exactly she was .......so, I sent for her death certificate ......that told me her death date and where she was buried............after hubby and I first checked out the cemetery and found nothing..........we asked a few other folks that happened to be in the cemetery if they could tell us who took care of it or if they knew who had a map of the plots...this is where the paying part came in.......(hubby was very mad to say the least that, there are people like that)....but, before my Mother died, she knew where her sister was buried and, exactly where her grave was.........you see Mother was just a child herself when her sister died and for years she looked...............Mother died two years ago and, I helped give her that. She also got to see photo's of family members she heard of but, never seen......I was very happy that I could give her that! Oh, how I love genealogy . Judy, thank you very much for all the work you do......and, I DO know you do alot.............from me to you........you are APPRECIATED ! In 1976 there was a book (two vols.- 1500+pages) published listing persons buried in each of the cemeteries in Mifflin County, the location of the cemetery and who is the caretaker. I found the book at the National Genealogical Society library, which has now moved to St. Louis. I feel certain that there must be a copy in the Mifflin County Historical Society library in Lewistown. Because of copyright laws and the no. of pages, I did not make a copy of the book.
