    3. Good Day to all, Can someone tell me why our local Historical Society is not open in the evenings ? I have been asked this questions so many times that I thought I would ask WHY myself ? So many people work and can not get to do their genealogy only via the internet and, we all know that doing it that way you are taking a gamble and, you still have to gather up the verification on what is sent or given to you. I have learned that some ...now I said only some like to add who they want to their tree to make it look good......I have had some information handed to me and I wondered where they gathered these little tid bits from ? Some like to dream away..........ALWAYS verify your information .....I add no one to my tree without it ! Again, WHY isn't the Mifflin County Historical Society open in the evenings ? Most others are ! Kindly, Bea [email protected]

    3. My guess on why the HS isn't open evenings is because there are not enough volunteers or persons willing to help with that. Most of the HS I have used for my research have retired persons volunteering and they just do it during the day time. Also there may not be enough interest to keep them open evenings. Maybe we could take a survey and see how many would be interested in having it open one or two evenings and would YOU volunteer to be there one of those evenings? If we got enough interest, maybe we could also get enough people so that everyone would only have to volunteer one night a month or less. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! 3. > Can someone tell me why our local Historical Society is not open in the > evenings ? > I believe this is a recurring problem whenever genealogical research materials are housed remotely from a public library. Many years ago we had a similar problem -- A town of about 35,000, beautiful library and a beautiful center for the arts where the Historical Society had a lovely room. Problem was that the materials were seldom available for use even by our members. We finally persuaded the powers-that-be to move the general genealogical materials (reference books) to the library. The collection has grown immensely and the number of volunteers increased significantly. We moved from that community about 13 years ago but when going back I have talked with a number of people and they tell me I should go check out the library for all the new materials that both the library and the members of donated. Now, I have the same situation here in the village where I live. The Museum has a wonderful collection (I have been told -- never been there because of the limited hours they are open) and the library is new with lots of space. I will be donating my extensive collection of materials (over 30 years worth) with some very valuable rare books when we finally move from our home to a retirement place, but I will be sure to select a place where they will be accessible to those who will benefit from them. I would hope that the rare books are digitally imaged for use. Karen

    3. Lewistown is a very small town. No hotels, no public transportation. Not many use the library. The days that I was there, perhaps a half dozen persons came each day. Ir is open Tuesday and Wednesday. The volunteers are great, very helpful. The courthouse has very early assessment records, found a lot of info. People were wonderf;ul.
