Notes for WILLIAM B CONNER: When clearing Mom's house on 3/15/94, Walt and I found a note on the back of a letter Clarice had written to Mom and Dad inviting them to what looked like it might have been a school play. Funeral at home Thurs. 2:30 p.m. Mabel." According to M Alberta Swartz in "Three Interesting Families" Dave was born in Virginia. Have two different obituaries in his folder. 1. [PAMIFFLI] What's in a Name? Maybe Your Heritage
    2. Mona Anderson
    3. I read this interesting article on German surnames in Thursday's CENTRE DAILY TIMES of State College, PA written by Bruce Teeple. For those close to State College, the Centre County GRange and Encampment and Fair is having a Centre County Family Heritage Day at the Rec Building in Centre Hall, PA starting Sunday, August 26 at 1 p.m. "Hans Bahlow's "Dictionary of German Names" offers a fascinating glimpse into how family names reflected Germany's changing political and social landscape. Economic promise and military threats were sufficient reason to keep people on the move. Yet, as Aaron Fogleman points out in "Hopeful Journeys" only about 15 percent of 18th century Germans actually moved to the New World. Everyone else roamed across the continent. Beilers did not start out as Amish craftsmen or farmers; they were barrel inspectors. The first Fornsler (Fernsler) was not an architect; he made varnish. Kistlers did not settle legal disputes; they built cabinets. A rope maker (Saylor, Seiler and Seyler) would have performed a critical job, whether he was on land or at sea. A Buttner (Bitner) made copper tubs. Rinkers made buckles. When barbers performed double duty as surgeons, they needed an assistant, or Schropfer (Shreffler), to apply leeches and let the "bad blood" out of patients. Philadelphia's Drexel family can claim some connection to the Tresslers, Trexlers and Traxlers: they operated wood lathes. Long before Strykers became armored vehicles or departmental administrators, they were Streichers who measured grain and cloth. Pletchers did not originally sell berr; their name was Bletz (tailor). There was a difference between a Flick (clothes mender) and a Fleck. The latter, like a Schuster, fixed shoes. Wingards worked in vineyards. Zieglers made bricks. A Bube (Boob) was a hired hand. Flegels (Fleagle) threshed the rye grown by the Rogge (Rockey) farmer. They would have left the stalks (Halm) in the fields and stored hay in the Schoche (Shook). Food hucksters living near a mountain would have been Hackenbergs. If you wanted to buy figs, you went to a Feick (Fike). Kummels (Kimmel) dealt in spices, particularly caraway seeds, while Mandels sold almonds. A Markwald (shortened to Mark, Markle, Merkel or Mearkle) guarded borders. Aikey and Eich have different spellings but similar pronunciations. Their progenator lived by an oak tree. (Whether he was a frequent political candidate is lost in the mists of time.) We also don't know whether a "noisemaker" (Kneller) was a profession, a hobby or just a bad habit. Brubakers can trace their origin back to the Swiss village of Brubach, near Zurich. Zerbys were from Zerben, near Magdeburg. Ishlers may have come from Isbarn. Karstadt produced Kerstetters. The Rachaus came from Rackow, near Hamburg, just as Moyers were affiliated with Meura, a village near Saarfeld. Lohrs came from the vicinity of the Lahr River. Since Lingel (or Lingle) was an old name for water, we can also see how a Klinger lived near a mountain gorge with a stream. Swavelys, Schwabs and Swopes all came from Swabia. Eungard or Ungar ancestors traded with Hungarians. Beahms (originally Bohm) dealt with Bohemians. Saints Florian (Flory), Francis (Frantz), Wenzeslaus (Wetzel) and Sebald (the patron saint of Nuremburg) were all sources of inspiration. Reglers (Regel) followed the monastic rule of St. Augustine. Ilgens took their name from Ottilie, and Alsatian saint. Gottshalls were servants of God. You could have a beard (Bartges) or dark, curly hair like a Moor (Mohr or Moore). There could be something remarkable about one's nose, or Nase, that evolved into Neese. Snowflakes (Schneebli) evidently inspired the first Snavely. Bahlow says that Fravels can trace their roots back to either a Frebel ("bold") or a Frevel ("blasphemer"). A Stocker could be "resolute as a stump". A Krieger (Creeger) was quarrelsome and warlike, while a Kephart (or Gebhart) could be generous. You could be handy with a sword (Eckhart, Eckley or Eggert) or with an ortel, or spear (Artley, Ertel or Ertley). A Kolbe (or Colby) swung clubs. A Schutz (Sheetz) didn't offer food or fuel on the go; he was a skilled archer. Destroyers were called Hahrer (Haerer). One who was either shining or famous was a Bechtold (Bechtel). Eisenhuth literally means "iron hat" because they made helmets. Corl comes from Karl, meaning one as free as Charlemagne." A Hoffman managed estates. Imhoofs lived near a courtyard. Zettle comes from Sedelmeier, or the tenant of a manor. Kammerers (Kemmerer) served as treasurers; Keysers, Kaysers and Keisers represented the Kaiser, or king; and a Ribbe, or Rippke (Ripka), was considered a glorious ruler. Gentzel, Handel and Handelman are all versions of Johannes. Heintz and Heintzelman come from Heinrich (Henry). Before we associated Yocum with Al Capp's Li'l Abner, it was originally a variation of Joachim. People living near unplowed hills (Brachbill or Brightbill), towering cliffs (Stauffer) or steep slopes (Steiger and Stitzer) chose those names. Birds were another popular source for names, whether they were geese (Greib), yellowhammers (Greninger) or ravens (Ingram). Finally, remember this rough rule of thumb: names ending in "-er" ususlly originated in the south. Those ending with "-mann", such as Zimmerman (carpenter) or Heckman (one who lives near a hedge) were northerners. --------------------------------- Park yourself in front of a world of choices in alternative vehicles.
