Good Day, I am in search of anyone who knew the Mildred Nicholson Family. I was at a sale a few years ago and bought something that belonged to her. I would like to ask a few questions about this item. Mildred died between 2000 - 2007...not sure the year I bought this item. ANY help would be appreciated. Kindly beair@verizon.net
In the note below it looks like I got carried away with the Dorey's living next door to this Ebbs & had unintentionally said John H.'s mother was Margaret Dorey when in fact his mother was Mary Maria Kagarise the wife of Emanuel Ebbs II. ----- Original Message ----- From: "slbearer" <slbearer@comcast.net> To: <HoutsRFred@aol.com>; "elaine kahler" <ekahler@yahoo.com>; "L J HANSFORD" <jlhan@msn.com>; <pacentre@rootsweb.com>; <pacambri@rootsweb.com>; <c.cupp2@acsalaska.net>; <pamiffli@rootsweb.com>; <pablair@rootsweb.com>; "Jean L. Josie: If you have directions to the Spring Run Brethren Cemetery, I could possibly do it this weekend. If it's a large cemetery, I'd need an idea about where the stone might be. Hi Fred No, I don't have access to One World Tree. I do have a copy of Newton Antes & Catherine with children John 2 & Alice 4/12 on the 1860 census record in Clearfield Co., Morris Twp. 1880 Catherine Ebbs 44 with children Samuel R. & Edith U both 7, John L. Antis 23, Nora W. Antis 17 & Enolia M. Antis 11. Living next door to to Mathias Plank with Father in law George Dorey living in the house hold. George is the father of Margaret Dorey. Margaret is John H.'s Ebbs' mother. familysearch.org has John H. Ebbs with Catherine J. Waring & children Edith U, & Samuel Raymond in Philipsburg, PA Centre Co. 1900 I believe Catherine is with her son John in Philipsburg Centre Co., but I can't make out the census that well. Susan - I do not know the surname of either of Jeremiah's wives. But, from re-reading your email, it appears you've found Jeremiah Ebbs enumerated twice in the 1880 census. What I tried to do what highlight the family names that were the same in the two census records that you listed, below. Wilson John was one of Jeremiah's children. I am guessing, from the double enumeration, that Ellsworth's middle name was James. And, from what you've found, I would make a jump that Jeremiah's first wife, Sarah, was Sarah Hannah. I have found many individuals enumerated twice, in slightly different places - maybe they were working in that area or living with another family member while working in that area? I don't know. Here is what I've found for Jeremiah, son of Emanuel Ebbs and Mary Maria Kagarise, after 1880: 1900 Allegheny Co, Wilkinsburg, PA Census - ED 529, Sheet 1, Line 34: Living at 1021 South Avenue Ebbs, Jeremiah F. age 62 b. Apr 1838 plasterer married 12 years wife Anna E. age 50 b. Nov 1849 2/3 children still living Both born in PA. Jeremiah's father was born in England and his mother was born in Germany. (This contradicts earlier information.) Anna must be Jeremiah's second wife. 1910 Los Angeles Co, 5th Ward, Pasadena, CA Census - Sheet 113: Living at 1255 N. Lake Avenue Ebbs, Jeremiah F. age 71 married 22 years both parents born in OH wife Anna E. age 60 2/3 children still living Both born in PA. 1916 Voter list for Pasadena, Precinct 9, Los Angeles, California: Jeremiah F. Ebbs, retired. 1375 Prime Court 1920 Los Angeles Co, Pasadena, CA Census - ED 496, Sheet 10B: Scripps Home for Aged people Ebbs, Jeremiah age 82 b. PA widowed parents both born in OH [Parents birth places incorrect. Jeremiah is living in Los Angeles as is his son Ellsworth) 1924 Voter list for Altadena Precinct 4, Los Angeles, California: Jeremiah E. Ebbs, retired, Calaveras Street ********* Here is son Ellsworth - notice he shows up in California also: 1900 Allegheny Co, City of Wilkinsburg, PA Census - ED 530, Sheet 2 Living at 801 Franklin Street. Ebbs, Ellsworth J. age 38 b. Aug 1861 in PA plasterer wife Charlotte A. age 43 b. July 1856 in PA +1 servant and 9 boarders. Married 17 years. 1920 Blair Co, Altoona Twp, PA Census (ED 43, Sheet 18B): Ebbs, Elsworth J. age 58 insider plasterer 1930 Los Angeles, Long Beach, CA Census - ED 1074, Sheet 13B: Ebbs, Ellsworth J. age 68 lodger widowed window cleaning Married at age 22. 1932 Voter List Pasadena, Precinct 5, Los Angeles, California Ellsworth J. Ebbs, 1055 E. Villa Street Jeremiah's second wife, Annie, is listed as his wife. She also was born in an earlier year, than his daughter Annie. (1849 vs 1869) I don't have any information on John H. Ebbs and a marriage to Sara Ward or Catherine Waring - so I will have to relook at that information. That would be new information for my files. Elaine How do you know this is the son of Emanuel & Mary, in CA & I know this says wife but could this Annie possibly be Jeremiah's daughter? I have Jeremiah Ebbs b. Abt. 1838 in PA married to Sarah H. b. 1831 in PA. Children of Ellsworth J., Maria Elizabeth (Lizzie), John Wilson & Anna M. [ I am wondering what Ellsworth's middle name might have been? Anyone know? I wonder if the name James would fit in there?] On Jeremiah Ebbs 06/21/1880 census in Halfmoon Twp., Centre Co., PA. I have Ebbs, Jeremiah 42, Farmer. Sarah H. 49. Ellsworth J. 18. Lizzie M. 16. Wilson J. 15, Laborer. Anna M. 11. James 83, Carpenter, b. England, parents from England. On this same 1880 census I have: 06/25/1880 Ferguson Twp., Centre Co., PA. Ebbs, J. F. Plasterer 42. S. Hannah 48. [Would everyone agree that the next child would be James E.? Jno E.?] Jms E. 19, plasterer, Jno W. 15, plasterer apprentice. Annie 11. [Notes:Does anyone know what Sarah's [Jeremiah's wife's] maiden name was or who her parents were? James was another son of Emanuel I's. I have conflicting dates as to if he was actually older or younger then Emanuel. Does anyone know?] I also had a Sarah Hannah somewhere but it does not seem to be jumping out at me here, so I guess perhaps that must not be her. Next I also have another son of Emanuel Ebbs II named John H. birth about 1840 in PA married 12/26/1854 in Baileyville, Huntingdon, Co., PA to Sara Ward. A little odd but what isn't in this business. Could one of these two Ebbs actually be John. Does anyone have John H.'s middle name or know what happened to him? I don't have any information on this Sara Ward. Does anyone know what her middle name was? Does anyone have her birth or death information? Was she John M. Ward's sister & the daughter of Simon Ward & Elizabeth Sellers? Ok, I've long ran out of time for the evening. I certainly hope with everyone included we will be able to pull some answers together here. Death notice from the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles, California, November 24, 1913: "Ebbs - November 22, 1913, at No. 1284 North Hudson Avenue, Pasadena, Annie E. Ebbs, aged 64 years, wife of J. F. Ebbs. "Funeral services at 2:30 p.m. Monday, November 24, 1913 at parlors of Turner & Stevens Co, Pasadena." I do not have a death date nor an obituary for Jeremiah. I think he died between 1924 (he is listed on the California Voter List that year) and 1930 (he is not in the census that year). So, this is not much to add, but I thought you might want it. Just a second note real quick, because it looks like unless John H. Ebbs was married twice. I might not have corrected some of my first notes on John H. Ebbs. I have John H. Ebbs birth about 1840 in Franklin, Huntingdon, PA married about 1872 in Centre Co., PA to Catherine J Waring. Children of Edith U. & Samuel Raymond (possible twins) both with a birth of 03/25/1873 in Philipsburg, Centre Co., PA. Catherine was born in Clearfield PA 09/1836 & died Aug 1913 in Philipsburg, Centre Co., PA & although I haven't found an obituary on her it says that she is buried in the Philipsburg Cemetery. To top it off I just found the Samuel I was trying to figure out also. Don't you love it when the pieces fall into place. ----- Original Message ----- From: "slbearer" <slbearer@comcast.net> To: "elaine kahler" <ekahler@yahoo.com>; <jcopple@msn.com>; "L J HANSFORD" <jlhan@msn.com>; <pacentre@rootsweb.com>; <pacambri@rootsweb.com>; <c.cupp2@acsalaska.net>; <pamiffli@rootsweb.com>; <pablair@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 02, 2008 12:12 AM Subject: Re: [PACENTRE] Ebbs tidbit > Hi Elaine > > Nice to hear from you again. Hi Elaine Nice to hear from you again. Of course anything on my Ebbs is always appreciated & thanks so much for thinking of me, however, now I really have a bit of confusion going on. Your mention of J.F. Ebbs reminded me that I have been looking for a J.F. Ebbs. How do you know this is the son of Emanuel & Mary, in CA & I know this says wife but could this Annie possibly be Jeremiah's daughter? Wait, rather then go by my [poor] memory I am not going to mention that might be his daughter Annie until I look back to see what dates & such I have for her for less confusion later. I'm including Lois & Jean in this, they are coming in on the Ward side & I'm looking for all the help I can get on this one. Cindy I am including you since we've found some new Ward descendants & I believe that the Ward's are from your area of expertise & I would like to include you on some of our up coming conversations on the Wards also. [They were living next door to Jeremiah's sister Nancy.] Cornelious, George 50. Laborer from PA. Nancy 44. Thomas, Lytle 7, nephew. Maria Ebbs 70, mother-in-law. These two census records are surely odd. The similarities might make you think that they might have been the same family just visiting someone one of those two days, but why would they both be head of household? Next all census records tell me that Jeremiah was a plasterer, but in my records I for some reason did not go any further then 1880 for Jeremiah so I am thinking I might not have been able to find him. Is Kathy Waters on the Mifflin Co. PA list? Or does anyone have a somewhat current email address for her? Kathy and I last corresponded in 1004 regarding the Longwell and Ramsey families of Mifflin Co. An email I sent to Kathy today came back as undeliverable. Anyone on the list researching Longwell or Crissman families of Mifflin Co., PA? Helen Graves
I have noticed for several months throughout 2007 and 2008 queries and responses for look-ups in an "Old, Rare Book of 1886," but I haven't been able to find the title of this book. Is it possible that this book is "History of That Part of the Susquehanna and Juniata Valleys Embraced in the Counties of Mifflin, Juniata, Perry, Union and Snyder in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania," two volumes, published 1886 in Philadelphia by Everts, Peck & Richards? I found that book in Lewiston some years ago, and in it (Vol I, Page 56) there is a David Huddleston who was evicted from "south of the Juniata River" in 1753 because his settlement there encroached upon a treaty with the Tuscarora Indians. I also found (Vol I, page 750) a James Heddleston "New Name for 1772." This James Heddleston was my 3g grandfather. He is said (without proof) to have been born in 1736 in the Kishacoquillas Valley, and there is an Indenture showing that in 1796 he sold his land in Milford Twp, present Juniata County. He was married to Jane Montgomery, who was born 1738 in probably the Tuscarora Valley. Does anybody know these ancestors? Dave Hudelson

One is concerning an Anthony Ferrier (page 496), a carpenter, who is in the 1809 Lewistown Assessment rolls, on Main and Market Streets. The other concerns John Ferier who married Jane Beatty, a daughter of a John Beatty (page 615). This John Beatty took out a warrant for 150 acres of land in Mifflin county on 21 October 1772. He had just the one son George, who died young, and 6 daughters: Jane(John Ferier); Catherine(Thomas Knox); Margaret(John Dull); Susan(Alexander Stewart); Elizabeth(Robert Forgy); and Martha (never married). Sorry there wasn't more. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He was born in Scotland in 1732, married Jean Marlin in 1758, and died in Mifflin Co.,PA in 1792. There is a Capt. in front of his name which leads me to believe that he was in the Fr. & Indian War or the Rev. War. His children are: Thomas, Agnes, James, Samuel, William, Andrew, Elizabeth, and John. All this info I got on the family search website so I don't know how accurate it is! Capt. Andrew Ferriers father's name is Samuel and his mother's name is Agnes (maiden name unknown). Andrews wife, Jean, was born in 1758 in Lancaster Co.,PA. Thank you for your generous offer of assistance! Hope you are not too overwhelmed with requests! Peggy Shrader Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. However, my direct BURR ancestors were in Guernsey CO, OH prior to 1840, but not as early as 1800. They were still is PA in 1800. I will check to see if one of the sisters from this family (William and Ann Edwards BURR) was the one that married in 1799. That is possible. They were Quakers and are found frequently in the Quaker records. Ken Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Yes, this is the family. Jane married a Pearson and as you pointed out moved to Belmont Co. OH and then she removed to IA with one of her children. My descent is from David, whose Father William left him $1 in his will. I believe that Willaim was still upset with David for marrying outside of the Quaker Faith from which David was ex'ed. David had two children by 1800 and later moved to Mifflin Co. PA and finally Guernsey Co. OH. I have done some research on David and family and have tried to piece together all of David's children. I have several of them by name but will have to go back and see what info I have. If you are still actively seeking info, please contact me direct at kenclark35@yahoo.com and I will give you a private e-mail so we can communicate directly.
