I have in my database a Thomas Westbrook and his wife Mary née Hefreight daughter of HENRY and MARY HEFREIGHT. THOMAS WESTBROOK and wife Mary née HEFREIGHT had a daughter MARY E. WESTBROOK who married JOHN CONRAD according to the following biographical sketch. Let me know if this is what you wanted. Regards, Nancy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Biographical Encyclopedia of HUNTINGDON, Juniata and Mifflin and Perry COUNTIES. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Page ?? Thomas WESTBROOK received a rather limited education in the common schools of Huntingdon. Early in life he began wrok for his own support, first as a farm "hand" and afterwards on the Pennsylvania Canal. Later he became a captain of a canal boat, and continued in that occupation until May 1, 1857, when he entered the employ of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company as car inspector, at Huntingdon. After three years of service, Mr. WESTBROOK was appointed night train dispatcher, in 1860, and on December 1, 1877, was promoted to his present position. His alertness and faithfulness as a railroad official have won for him the respect and confidence of his employers. Mr. WESTBROOK's political preferences are Democratic. On February 11, 1847, THOMAS WESTBROOK was married near Petersburg, Huntingdon County, to MARY E., daughter of HENRY and MARY HEFREIGHT, natives of Germany, but for many years residents of Huntingdon County. Of their nine children, four are deceased: William Lewis; Frank; Annie; Kate; and Clara. The survivors are: JOHN H. and George B., of Huntingdon; James R., of Pottsville, Pa.; MARY E. [Mrs. JOHN CONRAD], of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Margaret [Mrs. Robert Sampson], residing in Colorado. The family attend the Methodist Episcopal church. Dear Ernie, I'm so sorry to hear that you no longer go to the historical society. I finally got my schedule arranged so I can go in September and was very much looking forward to working with you. But, just like all the other researchers, I'll have to learn how to muddle along without you. In behalf of all the people you have helped over the years, especially under such difficult circumstances, I would like to say "Thank you" for your generosity. They were residents of McClure PA and are buried in the Samuels Cemetery. Much of the information I gained through personal research of original records and generally reliable secondary records. Some information obtained from other researchers I can say I trust but I've not had time to personally verify all that has been given to me. The information is offered as starting points for investigation, not as "finished" genealogical data. The Spigelmyer [Spittlemyer> Spitelmayer> Spittlemire] family has been traced back to 1659 in the village of Hoffenheim, Germany (12 mi. SE of Heidelberg). Martin and Maria Spitelmayer sailed from Rotterdam 8/28/1733. They arrived in Philadelphia aboard the ship HOPE (Daniel Reed, Master), with children Anna Maria (age 24), Anna Madlena [Magdalena?] (age 21) and Hans Adam (age 18). Hans Adam is held to be Annie's ancestor. After a sojourn in Berks County PA, Spigelmyers migrated westward into the portions of Northumberland Co. that now comprise Union and Snyder Counties. In time, some moved further westward across the line from Snyder Co. into Mifflin Co., portions of which became Juniata Co. in 1831. Annie's great-grandfather, Valentine Spigelmyer, is believed to have lived in the two-level log cabin that was on the property of his descendant Walter Spigelmyer, RD#1, McClure PA: Valentine's name appears in an old deed's pedigree for that property. [Walter Spigelmyer's fathe! r, Lucian, was brother of Annie's father, Michael, Jr.] Annie's grandfather, Michael, Sr. and his brother Joseph both farmed on Shade Mountain above Cuba Mills in Juniata Co. (north of Mifflintown PA) in what is still known as Spigelmyer Gap along Spigelmyer Run (to the east of Suloff Gap and Suloff Run, the latter named for Henry Groninger Suloff and his sons). After Joseph Spigelmyer's death, his wife Rebecca let the taxes fall in arrears on their portion of land. This property was picked up for taxes about 1895 by a party named Hower (of Lancaster PA) and in 1991 it is owned by Ernie Hower. Another source of information on Annie's family is the obituary for her brother, Charles Spigelmyer, in the Lewistown SENTINEL (found in Juniata Co. Historical Society's "Obituary Scrapbook #1," p. 36). Charles, who had lived at 61 Logan Street, Lewistown died on Friday 5/20/1960. He had been born at Shindle on 5/21/1898. He married Claire Shellenberger and worked as a "Checker" for the PRR. He was a veteran of WWI and a member of the United Church of Christ. He was buried Monday 23 May 1960 in the Richfield Cemetery, Rev. Theron M. Snyder officiating. Surviving sisters and brothers were "Mrs. Earl (Annie) (Spigelmyer) Suloff of McClure, Mrs. Charles (Stella) Miller of Lewistown, Clarence W. Spigelmyer of Lewistown RD3, Mrs. William (Elizabeth) Barton of Lewistown, I. Elwood Spigelmyer of Park View Terrace, and Mrs. Armin (Margaret) Bohrer of Nome AK." A newspaper article reporting a Sulouff reunion at the home of Annie's grandson, Joseph Bratton, on 17 August 1980 in McClure PA furnishes some information. As matriarch of the family, Annie Lodema (Spigelmyer) Sulouff, was in attendance and was honored by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Named attendees were: Edith & Samuel Betlyon, Sr. and daughter Deb; Marge and Samuel Betlyon, Jr. and children Tracey, Terri, and Clayton of Burnham; Belle Ann Mayes and children, Nancy, Dan and Dave; Vickie and Michael Baumgardner and children Mikey and Jamie; Mary Beth and Tim Burke and son Timmy, all of Lewistown. Also attending were marion and Wesley Swigart, McVeytown RD#2; Don and Shirlee Swigart and daughters, Lisa and Lori, Carlisle Pa.; Evelyn and Lewis Shade and son Tim; Ginger Shade and children, Scott and Beth Ann, of Burnham; Joan and Thomas Shade and children, marie and Brian, Pleasant Gap Pa.; Martha and Lester Bratton; Joe and Sue Bratton and son Daniel ! of McClure RD 2; Maxine and William Best and children, Lynn and Brian, Orefield Pa.; and guests Lorie Drake, Lewistown, and Ron Snook of Burnham Pa. Does your Archibald Stewart connect back to Philadelphia? My COX line is somewhow connected to Stewart. My ancestor, Paul Cox, a Philadelphian, married a woman who had a son named Archibald Stewart. Paul Cox's will (1823), left to "Archibald Stewart the son of my late wife the farm on which he resides in Mifflin County. . . ." There also was an Archibald Stewart who was a sea captain who sailed out of Philadelphia. In the 24 July 1799 issue of the Phila. GAZETTE, there was notice of a "Marshal's Sale" which included a property of "317 acres No. 721, located and patented by Archibald Stewart, situate on the westerly side of the N.E. barnch of Susquehanna, a little below the mouth of Tunnehannack creek." Nine other large parcels of land are also listed, apparently all owned by Stewart, because at the end of the list we read, "Seized and taken in execution as the property of Archibald Stewart, deceased, and to be sold by William Nichols, Marshal." I think that some, or all of these parcels are in Northumberland County, but as a Chicagoan, I'm by no means sure. Does the Cox connection ring any bells with anyone?
