Author: soltepa Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.mifflin/3141/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Mifflin County Alms House record book covers the time period from 1851-1919. It was not unusual for people to need assistance, whether shelter, food, heat, etc. This source of information gives a better view of society during America's early years. I have seen Alm's House records that date to the 1750's. It was an English trait carried over to America. People admitted to the Alms House were expected to help with the operation of the county farm. Tending to crops, or animals... you would work for your keep. Children were frequently placed in private homes and refered to as "bounded out", similar to today's foster care, but they were expected to work for their keep, even though the person who took them in was paid by the county for their "kindness". Records include some names of those who died there and were buried in unmarked graves in the "Potter's Field". Indications of over 300 burials. To date only about 129 names of the dead are known. My great-grandfather's family needed help from the Alms House in 1912, and again in the 1920's as 9 family members out of 13 died from consumption(tuberculosis). Only my great-grandmother, 2 daughters and 1 son survived. Funeral home records show payment for a few funerals was made by the County Home(Alms House). 9 dead, all in unmarked graves. We know which church cemetery now but can't place a marker because we don't know which graves. The church has no record of them being buried there. -------------------- Anyone who may be "stuck" may want to contact the Mifflin County Historical Society who have the record book in their possession. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pamchs/home.htm Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Take note; Lewis Grant Peter Manges was accidently put under wrong parents. His parents are Joseph F. Manges and Flora Holsopple and some dates corrected. (found corrections when rewriting Custer book. Sorry) Have added another 1000 pages, which means we only have another 4000 to go recover the lost books. Is anyone interested in helping create a site where we can jointly work on this project? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Hi Bea, On SS Death Index, found this Haines but no Strauss, or any variants. No other relevant listings found. Newspaper archive had no results. Name: Christine A. Haines SSN: 162-36-5452 Born: 20 Dec 1944 Died: 7 Aug 2004 State (Year) SSN issued: Pennsylvania (1961-1962) Don't know if it is the correct one. Maybe it's the lead you need.
