    3. Hi Bea and Susan, Emanuel (Bear) Baumgardner, born 5 Dec 1788, son of Christian and Maria Baumgardner (of Newberry Twp, York Co) was married to Mary Polly Ebbs on Oct 29, 1809. According to information provided to me by Elaine Kahler (thank you Elaine) the children of Emanuel and Mary Polly (Ebbs) Baumgardner were: Jacob Ebbs Baumgardner, b. 4 Feb 1811, married Mary Ann Baumgartner (no relation) Ester Baumgardner, b. 10 Jul 1813, died 1 Sept 1814 Mary Baumgardner, b 4 Oct 1818, married George S. Baumgartner (no relation) Henry Baumgardner, b. 30 Oct 1820, died 30 July 1822 Nancy M. Baumgardner, b. 20 Jun 1823, died 12 May 1843 William Johnston Baumgardner, b. 21 Jun 1827, died 17 Aug 1830 Sara Elizabeth Baumgardner, b. 2 Sept 1829, married John Miles Isabelle Mae Baumgardner, b. 30 Apr 1832, married Robert Minshall Boggs Daniel Harrison Baumgardner, b. 1835, m. Catherine Spotts 1st and Laura Wilson 2nd. George S. Baumgartner and Mary Ann Baumgartner were siblings and they married the above Baumgardner siblings (Jacob Ebbs Baumgardner and Mary Baumgardner) in a double ceremony, according to information from Jacob's bible, last known to be in the possession of Bernice Romary in KS in 1951. Elaine believes the parents of George and Mary Ann Baumgartner were Jacob Baumgartner (from Maryland) and Elizabeth Scott (from Pennsylvania.) In a letter written by Beulah Warren Jones to Ray Baumgardner, dated June 9, 1973, Beulah says Mary Ann only had to change the "T" in Baumgartner to a "D" in Baumgardner when she married Jacob Ebbs Baumgardner. The children of Isabelle and Robert Boggs are listed as: Harris LeRoy born 1854, Robert M. born 1855, George H born 1856, James E. born 1857, William Foster born 1859, Margery born 1865, Zilla born 25 Jul 1872 and Catherine b ? Sorry, but I don't have any further information on Isabelle and Robert Bogg's descendants, or Robert's parents. I hope this helps to clarify these lines. It's confusing when siblings marry siblings in a neighboring family, but when those they marry also have similar names, it gets even more confusing. I've pulled this information from my book, "Our Branch of the Baumgardner Family Tree", of which Elaine was a major contributor and sounding board. (Bea was also a big help and I'm grateful for all of her help in sorting out these numerous lines of Baumgardners.) If either of you need any further information, please feel free to e-mail me. Unfortunately, apparently no one recognizes the McClellands of Mifflin County which started this thread. I was really hoping to learn more about the McClellands who were supposedly Hiram's half brothers and sisters. Best wishes, Sherry Shallenberger samc123@zoominternet.net

I guess I am going to need a little help on Mary Polly Baumgardner that married George Scott (last name?). I had his last name as Baumgardner. Do you have any birth, death or parent information on Robert Minshall Boggs that married Isabella Mae Baumgardner? Susan

This Christian from Mifflin Co., is said to have had children Johannes, Christina, Emanuel & Jacob.> Hi Susan, Thanks for your reply. Yes, I also think they are related! I was recently able to find a translation of the Quickel Church (York Co.) record done by George Seiffert on Film # 387,942, Item 2, and it looks to be very similiar to the translation done by William Hinke. Interestingly enough, on Film 387,942 there was a copy of the original German entry and it tells quite a different story! With the assistance of a German couple, who are serving a mission for the LDS church at the Family History Library, I was able to have the information translated as follows: Christian Baumgartner, born (or christened) the 5th day of April, was 26 years old on 22 Sept 1789 (making his birthyear 1763). He and his wife, have with each other 3 children they have created and those altogether are baptized with him. The godparents are Jacob Bear and Elizabeth, his wife. The record then lists his three children: Johannes born 23 Apr 1784, Christiana born 11 Sept 1787, Emanuel born 5 Dec 1788. There was also a later entry for Jacob, born 1799. And we believe this couple also had at least two more children, Christian Jr. and Abraham born after 1799, but have never found their baptisms. The translated record make it look like the above baptisms took place on April 5, 1790, but I think they were done on September 22, 1789 - which is why they mentioned his age as 26 years old on that date. I made a copy of the whole page and it looks like his entry was the last one for 1789 and then the one underneath it starts the ones for 1790. The previous page heading said 1789 at the top and the page with his entry says 1790 at the top, which is probably why the translators listed the baptisms as done in 1790. I have to leave for church right now, but if you want to contact me off-list at samc123@zoominternet.net I can share some other information we have pertaining to the Baumgardners of York County. Best wishes, Sherry

He is indeed a man and I am mighty curious as to the origin of the name. He also has a sister named "ava". It's not a popular name, thankfully, which has helped with research. Family history, death certificates and then the census are supporting his name so far. I know what you mean about census takers. I wish they would have a notation about whether the information is directly from the head of household or from a neighbor. I know they would get information from a neighbor if no one was home and you can tell when they do. The information is so wildly irregular, esp. with the spelling of uncommn names. Thanks for your tips! If you know anything about the name "Alvah" I would love to hear about it. It might help me with finding their Scottish father. 3. When I saw this posting on the Mifflin County list for McClellands, I was so excited. I thought I was finally going to find out more information on my Baumgardner's half brothers and sisters. I was disappointed to see they were from Allegheny County and, more than likely, no connection to mine - but how fortunate for them that a kind lister took the time to find them in the 1900 and 1930 census. I then figured as long as we already have a subject title for McClelland's of PA, I may as well enter my McClelland information and see if anyone recognizes them. Here's hoping... My ggg grandfather, Christian Baumgardner and his wife Mary (Polly) moved from York County to Mifflin County about 1830-1835. (We've been told Mary's maiden name is Linford, but have never found any proof of that.) We did find an 1835 baptismal record at St John's Lutheran Church (Salem Church 1833-1878) in Armagh Twp., in Mifflin County which lists their children as: Abraham born 10-17-1820, William born 5-16-1825, Mary born 3-27-1827, Lydia born 1-10-1830, Hiram born 11-15-1832 and Henrietta born 11-28-1835. All were baptised on 12-26-1835, with the parents listed as Christian and Polly Baumgardner - who I believe would have been born about 1800. We suspect the parents of the above children (Christian and Mary Polly) may have died prior to 1850 as their children are all scattered by the 1850 census: William and Hiram are living at the home of David and Sarah Mayben (possibly an older sister), Mary had married Reuben Hall and moved to Elkhart Co., IN; Abraham had married Eliza Yothers and moved to Centre Co. and from the following census, it appears as though his sister Lydia (who later married Adam Witherite) was living with him and his wife, Eliza. 1850 Boggs Twp., Centre County: Abram Baumgardner age, 29 Eliza age 23 William age 2/12 Lydia age 20 Not sure where Henrietta was in 1850, but she married Reuben Reiter. Hiram married Sara Jane Harshbarger and William married Mary Ann Clay. Anyway, we have been told Hiram had some McClelland half brothers and sisters - but I have never been able to prove that. Perhaps Mary Polly didn't die young after all. Maybe she remarried a McClelland after Christian died? Or, Christian remarried after she died??? Does any know of any McClelland marriages 1840-1850 in Mifflin County??? I would love to hear from anyone with Baumgardner/McClelland connections or anyone who has any suggestions on finding out what happened to Christian and Mary Polly. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions, Sherry Shallenberger

Alvah is sometimes used as a woman's name as well as a man's name. If you are not certain from additional evidence that your "Alvah" was a male, you might want to consider the possibility that Alvah was female. In such case, it might be wise to consider the possibility that 'her' disappearance from census records was due to marriage. Please remember that, other than your mention of census data, I do not know what evidence you are working from. I just want to alert you to the fact that you cannot depend entirely upon a notation in the census because I have found many errors made by 19th C. census takers. If you are certain my message is immaterial to the case of your male 'Alvah,' you will not hurt my feelings if you disregard it as completely worthless. I will never know!(¦D) Happy hunting!
