(I would have to check with someone in the Historical Society.): Mrs. Mary McClelland died June 29, 1815, aged 42 yrs. George McClelland, died Oct. 31, 1811, in 44th yr. of his age The following are in First Methodist Cemetery in Lewistown: George I. McClelland, died 3-11-1855, aged 23 yrs. That's all I can find.> Hi Mona, Thank you soooo much for taking the time to look up those entries for McClelland! I am really not sure what the correct spelling is. We were just told that my gg grandfather, Hiram Baumgardner, had some half brothers and sisters by the name of McClelland, but it could very easily be McClellan or McClellon. We believe Hiram's father, Christian Baumgardner, probably died in the 1840's, but the last known record we have of him is that 1835 baptismal record for St John's Lutheran Church (Salem Church) in Armagh Twp., in Mifflin County which listed his wife, Polly and their children Abraham born 10-17-1820, William born 5-16-1825, Mary born 3-27-1827, Lydia born 1-10-1830, Hiram born 11-15-1832 and Henrietta born 11-28-1835. There is an orphan's court record at the Mifflin Courthouse for a Christian Baumgardner, who died 13 Dec 1841, and an orphan's court hearing was held on 10 Nov 1842, with petitioner John Beatty, Administrator, naming children of deceased as "to wit ________, now the wife of David Mayben, Abraham, William, Mary, Lydia, Maria and Emmanuel, the last five children of whom are yet in their miniority." This Christian owned a tract of land situate in ArmaghTwp, adjoining lands of William Strunk, Charles Ramsey and others, containing twenty acres more or less. Mr. Beatty was asking the court to allow them to sell the land for the maintenance and education of the minor children. Attached was a list of debts owed by the estate in the amount of $515.41. At first I thought this must be Hiram's father, but as you can see Hiram and his sister, Henrietta aren't listed. So I have no idea who this Christian is. And they wouldn't have held an Orphan's court hearing if the mother of these children were still alive, would they? So, doesn't that mean this man's wife was already deceased too?? In the 1850 Armaugh Twp census, Hiram and his brother, William, are living with Sarah and David Mayben - so again, it appears this Sarah Mayben has some type of connection to the family, but I have yet to figure out the connection. If the above Christian Baumgardner, who died in 1841, isn't Hiram's father, then where is the death record for Hiram's father, Christian Baumgardner? And what happened to Christian's wife, Mary Polly Baumgardner? Did she re-marry someone by the name of McClelland (McClellan) or did she also die young, as some have suggested. One researcher found a Polly Baumgardner, age 80, born in PA, in the 1880 Armaugh Twp, Mifflin, PA, living in the home of a grandson George & Susan Baumgardner (his wife) and their six children. This would also fit for Polly, born about 1800, but who is this George and Susan Baumgardner??? Could there have been another son born after the 1835 baptism record and before his death??? I'm pretty sure I have all the children and grandchildren for Hiram and his siblings, and there are no Georges listed among them... It gets confusing because Christian's father was also named Christian and he also left York County and moved to Mifflin County about 1830, bringing some of his children with him (Johannes, Immanuel, Abraham, Jacob and probably others). The elder Christian Baumgardner, born 1763, died in the winter of 1848-49, according to a letter written by his daughter-in-law, Eliza (Yothers) Baumgardner, "Once a few months after I was married, Abram and I thought we'd take a little pleasure visiting my mother's folks about 16 miles from my father's, for I was staying at home yet that winter (1848-49). My husband said it was such good sleighing, we would visit a little. Well we went. After we'd driven 8 or 9 miles, we met two of his cousins, Christian and Jacob Baumgardner. They said they were sent for to go home to their father's. Their grandfather was dead - he had his home there with their father, the old man's youngest son. We intended to visit him too, but when we heard he was dead - we went there first. Well, I tell you, it was back in the hills, but it was a pleasant home, so neat and orderly." Oh, so many questions....and, as always, too few answers. Mona, thank you again for looking up those McClelland entries up. I really appreciate your help. I'll keep them for future reference. And thanks to everyone else for listening (reading). Maybe someone will see something I've overlooked. I am open to any and all suggestions. Best wishes, Sherry Shallenberger

    1. Re: [PAMIFFLI] RIDDLE surname
    2. Tink Miller
    3. Hi Donna, I'm a little unclear about the details of your query. Are you aware that Mary A. Riddle, 21, is living in the house with Julia A. and William on the 1850 Lewistown census? Julia and William are the last two entries on page 65 and Mary is on the first line of page 66, and clearly part of their family list. The censustaker left two blank lines below William's name, implying the end of that family list, which is very deceptive. Are you certain that the Mary McClain listed on the 1870 York census is the correct one? If I'm looking at the right York record, then I don't think the Mary Riddle above is yours. The Mary Riddle described above from the 1850 census would be 41 in 1870. The Mary McClain who is married to Joseph on the 1870 census for York Co. is only 34. [pg 27 of 43; Seven Valley, Springfield Township, York Co., line 30.] That would make her birth year about 1836. Are you certain that your Mary McClain's birth year was 1828, as given in your message? I suspect the Mary Riddle above traveled to Ohio as a domestic with a family named McCurdy, as follows: On 1860 census, pg 29 of 58, lines 14 - 24, there is a Mary A. Riddle, 29, born PA, residing in Lebanon, Clear Creek Township, Warren Co., Ohio, employed as domestic for family of Daniel McCurdy, 59, basketmaker. He and almost all his family also born in PA. With him is Catherine McCurdy, 65; Ruth Ann McCurdy, 14; John McCurdy, 9; Joseph McCurdy, 13; Sally Earnhardt, 4; plus a Maria Musgrove, 25, born in Ohio and just married in past year (She may be a McCurdy). Also sharing the house is Lewis McCurdy, 21; Rachel McCurdy, 23; and Ellen J. McCurdy, 2. These last three born in Ohio. Neither Lewis, Rachel, Daniel nor Catherine can read or write. None of the children attended school in past year. Appears to be an extended family sharing house. This census taken 13 July 1860. You might try following the five children of Joseph and Mary McClain of York Co., and see if that will lead to a clue about parents, grandparents, and extended relatives. wm, mary, samuel, curtin, john Also found these tidbits but have no idea if they are relevant or helpful: [1]Pennsylvania Vital Records, Vol. III; Marriages performed by Pastor John Hutchins, Presbyterian Church, Mifflintown, Lost Creek Valley: 23 April 1818 - Samuel Riddle married Sarah Jordan (pg 58) 11 Jan 1827 - John Riddle married Margaret Lukens (pg 61). 21 Oct 1834 - Samuel Riddle married Margaret Stuart (pg 64).. You are pretty savvy about researching, however here's a couple thoughts that might help --- You could post a message to the Allegheny list asking if there is anyone in the Sharpsburg area who could check the cemeteries for you and maybe provide a picture of the gravestone. Local historical society might have index to cemeteries. If you know his religious affiliation, that might lead to identifying a particular cemetery. Look up the local mortuaries and write to them, asking if they handled Alvah's funeral. If so, they know where he is buried. Once identified, ask them how to obtain a copy of their records on him. I know you'll succeed before long. Tink Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Baumgartner (no relation) Henry Baumgardner, b. 30 Oct 1820, died 30 July 1822 Nancy M. Baumgardner, b. 20 Jun 1823, died 12 May 1843 William Johnston Baumgardner, b. 21 Jun 1827, died 17 Aug 1830 Sara Elizabeth Baumgardner, b. 2 Sept 1829, married John Miles Isabelle Mae Baumgardner, b. 30 Apr 1832, married Robert Minshall Boggs Daniel Harrison Baumgardner, b. 1835, m. Catherine Spotts 1st and Laura Wilson 2nd. George S. Baumgartner and Mary Ann Baumgartner were siblings and they married the above Baumgardner siblings (Jacob Ebbs Baumgardner and Mary Baumgardner) in a double ceremony, according to information from Jacob's bible, last known to be in the possession of Bernice Romary in KS in 1951. Elaine believes the parents of George and Mary Ann Baumgartner were Jacob Baumgartner (from Maryland) and Elizabeth Scott (from Pennsylvania.)  In a letter written by Beulah Warren Jones to Ray Baumgardner, dated June 9, 1973, Beulah says Mary Ann only had to change the "T" in Baumgartner to a "D" in Baumgardner when she married Jacob Ebbs Baumgardner. The children of Isabelle and Robert Boggs are listed as: Harris LeRoy born 1854, Robert M. born 1855, George H born 1856, James E. born 1857, William Foster born 1859, Margery born 1865, Zilla born 25 Jul 1872 and Catherine b ?    Sorry, but I don't have any further information on Isabelle and Robert Bogg's descendants, or Robert's parents. I hope this helps to clarify these lines.  It's confusing when siblings marry siblings in a neighboring family, but when those they marry also have similar names, it gets even more confusing.  I've pulled this information from my book, "Our Branch of the Baumgardner Family Tree", of which Elaine was a major contributor and sounding board.  (Bea was also a big help and I'm grateful for all of her help in sorting out these numerous lines of Baumgardners.)  If either of you need any further information, please feel free to e-mail me. Unfortunately, apparently no one recognizes the McClellands of Mifflin County which started this thread.  I was really hoping to learn more about the McClellands who were supposedly Hiram's half brothers and sisters. 1. [PAMIFFLI] RIDDLE surname
    2. Donna Terrian
    3. Any help with RIDDLE surname in Mifflin County is most apprciated. Trying to connect Mary A. Riddle McClain (1828 - 1900) to unknown parents. 1850 census has a Julia A. Riddle with son William Riddle. Julia is found in 1860 Juniata Census, then no longer located. Mary A. Riddle married Joseph McClain - 1870 residing in York County, PA. Between 1870 and 1880 census, husband McClain must have died, as Mary A. Riddle McClain returns to Mifflin Co. in 1880 census as a widow. Mary A. Riddle McClain is buried in the Orbisonia Cemetery in Huntingdon County, PA - tombstone states death as 1900 only. Appreciate your assistance. e-mail: dgterrian@earthlink.net Donna Glant Terrian, Apopka, FL

    2. Hi, Susan, Since I am studying the SCOTTs in Mifflin County, I would be very interested to know if George is actually a SCOTT. And I've lost track of the thread of this conversation...what time period are we talking about? My SCOTTs leave the Mifflin County area about 1816/17. But I'm trying to find all the information I can on all of the families in the area, just to get an overall picture. So I'll keep an eye out for George and would greatly appreciate knowing more about him if you know anything at this point. Thank you!
