I don't have it in front of me at the moment, but my recollections are these: Catherine and Frank have been married less than 1 year. He's 42 and got married at 41. The marriage appears to take place not long after Anna was conceived. You should be able to locate a marriage certificate. It should indicate if Catherine was a widow or divorcee. The 1930 census for their District in Cleveland was done on April 3rd, so baby Anna at 3 mos. of age was born around New Year's Day of 1930. The girls' father must have died or been divorced from Catherine after March 1929 (9 mos prior to Anna's birth). I would search newspapers for death of man named Crouse in that timeframe. You might be able to locate a birth certificate for Anna, a death certificate for Frank, a divorce decree, or newspaper reports of these events. Her sister Mary at age 9 had to be born after April 3, 1920 and probably before April 3, 1921, but not before the date of the 1920 census wherever her parents were living then because she doesn't seem to be listed on that census. Again you may find a birth certificate or newspaper announcement of her birth. Their father was born in Germany. Catherine was first married at age 24 and she is 35 in 1930, so the marriage to Crouse took place around 1919. That is toward the end of WWI. Look for marriage record of a McNamara and Crouse about 1919. Given that Crouse was born in Germany, perhaps he fled to the US to escape the war. Some German children were sent away by their families or came here with their familes before the war to keep them safe. There may be ship's records or immigration records of his entry into the US. Try Ellis Island records for a young German male named Crouse, about same age as Catherine, whose destination was probably Ohio. The War broke out in Europe long before the US entered it, 1914 I think. I'd start the search for immigration records at least as early as 1910. Check Ohio census records for Crouse families with a son about Catherine's age. Start with Cleveland since that's where she was living on 1930 census. There may be Crouse relatives nearby or the father may even be living nearby. Also look for information in the newspapers about the girls as they grew up. Wedding announcements or obituaries may provide the missing information about father's full name. Catherine's parents were born in Northern Ireland and she was born in Ohio. Maybe the Crouse's and McNamara's were neighbors whose children grew up together. Explore the neighbors of the McNamara family on the census records all the way back to Catherine's birth. One final thought - although the girls are identified as the step-children of the head of household, maybe Catherine isn't the birth Mother either. Maybe she is their Aunt who is raising them. Good luck. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You might try the necrology files of the Cleveland Public Library. I did a quick check and found 33 hits on the Crouse surname going back to 1855. Did not check other spellings. There are over 600 when you include Kraus, Krause and Krauss. Lots of reading, but the access is free. http://dxsrv4.cpl.org/ Easily found the one for Patrick McNamara, which is an example of how most look. Hi, Since you posted your query to several county lists, I can't tell if you got the answer you need on one of the other County lists. I did see Donna's answer on this list and your reply. I don't have a definitive answer for you, but I think this info rules out some possibilities and perhaps offers some useful suggestions for further research. According to the 1910 Pennsylvania Miracode census, there are two Ebbs families in Cambria County at that time. One in Susquehanna and one in Hastings. (1) in Susquehanna, pg.42 of 88, lines 51 - 56, residing at Manion Mines Railroad: John E. Ebbs, 30, head of household, and John's family including wife Clara J, 28; daughters Margaret J., 7; Mary, 4; Annie M. 1 yr & 11 mos.; and George Ebbs, 60, father, widowed, residing w/his son. John & Clara have been married 10 years, first marriage for each. She has had 4 children, 3 still living. John is a shifter in a coal mine and owns the house w/mortgage. Everyone in house and their parents were born in PA. Adults can read and write; Margaret attended school the past year; all speak English. There is no indication of George's middle name or initial. (2)in Hastings, enum 116, pg. 17 of 43, lines 29 - 34, residing on Beaver St.: Thomas D. Ebbs, 37, head, with wife Anna J., 29; son James G, 9; and daughters Eva, 6; Lara, 4; and Edith, 1. It's the first marriage for both - 12 years, and she has had 6 children, 4 living. Other records show that the Thomas middle name was Daniel. The the 1920 census finds both families still residing in the same places. The John E. Ebbs family now lives at Cymbria Mines and has added another daughter Ruth, 5, and George is gone. John E. Ebbs now is listed as Edward, so he must have gone by his middle name. The Thomas E. Ebbs family now lives on Spangler St. and has added two daughters - Ruby, 5, and Marie, 1 yr 6 mos. Since this family is the only one actually residing in Hastings, I suggest exploring his extended family for another George. Also in 1920, a third Ebbs family now resides in Cambria: parents Harry and Anna, son George H Ebbs, age 9, and brother Joseph. In 1910, this couple is found in Ferguson, Centre County. Those are all the Ebbs listed in Cambria County for 1910 and 1920 censuses. There is no George listed in Cambria County for 1920 at all, and I don't find any evidence of another George Ebbs in the county in 1910. The Mr & Mrs. George Ebbs who are the parents of Verna must have moved into the county after the 1910 census and departed before 1920. I am reminded also that it was very common for people to be known by their middle names rather than their first names. Perhaps you'll find a male in the extended family with George as middle name who may have moved to Hastings during this timeframe. I suspect that the parents of this child lived nearby, but perhaps outside of Cambria County, and buried the child in the family plot at Union Cemetery. The unexpected death of a little child might logically require burial in such a plot. A young couple would not have acquired burial plots yet and likely did not have the financial resources to buy one. You might search adjacent counties for more George Ebbs's, including those with middle name of George. Donna's suggestion of looking for a death certificate for an Ebbs child in Feb. 1912, is probably your best next step. Again, Verna could be a middle name. The list for Union Cemetery on the website may not be complete. Perhaps you can find out who has the records, if they still exist. You also could explore funeral homes in the area in 1912 and contact any that still exist to see if they have a record of handling the burial of Verna. I know where the cemetery is & I never knew about this child buried there. There is no stone for her or other children from the family that is buried there. I have a George 8 mo. old on the 06/08/1880 census records in Clearfield Co. at that time & I couldn't find him after that. This is the first time I've seen mention of another George in that area & I am trying to find him in that area now that I've seen this. He has never come up in any census records. I am also wondering why I did not get an e-mail saying that my message posted to the list. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna Terrian" <dgterrian@earthlink.net> To: <pamiffli@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 06, 2009 7:11 PM Subject: Re: [PAMIFFLI] Daughter of George Ebbs (Union Cemetery?) > Where is the family in the 1910 census, and 1920 census. Where is the family in the 1910 census, and 1920 census. Seems to me if the family is in a specific vacinity in 1910 census, most likely, the cemetery is within that area. If family "moved" and is in a different area in 1920, then check that area as well. Death certificate for this individual is possible, since the death is in 1912, after 1906.
There is no mention of this child in the Union Cemtery on the Cambria website. Is this George Ebbs (George E.?) the son of George H. Ebbs & Margaret Dorey (Dorry?) Does anyone know who is wife or children were? North Cambria News, Hastings, Friday, February 9, 1912 Verna, a little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Ebbs, died at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon from pneumonia. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon with interment in the Union Cemetery.
