    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: SMiller6028 Surnames: ALEXANDER; GARDNER/GARDINER; OSCEOLA Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.mifflin/1255.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Debbie, I also am descended from James and Rosie through their son James. We descendants are a vast clan. I see that the message you responded to from Denise was dated 2001, so I thought I would reply in case she doesn't receive your message. There has been no clear resolution to the question of who was Rosie's mother. Sounds like you have you read the book of the "Descendants of John Alexander of Lanarkshire and wife Margaret Glasson". (It's available online now and you can purchase it on CD.) You may have heard of a pamphlet called "Alexander's Fording". It was self-published several years ago by another branch of the family to commemorate an anniversary. That branch of the family (William Alexander)was the one that retained and lived on one of the land patents awarded to James in Clearfield County for his service in the Revolutionary War. His other patents were sold. In that pamphlet, they printed a picture of a drawing, which they own, of a girl named "Sarah O! sceola", who they asserted was the mother of Rosie. I have been told that some family members of other branches of the Alexander lineage asked to see the original drawing and were refused. There has been no evidentiary confirmation that this Sarah was Rosie's mother, nor that this portrait depicting her as Native American is accurate or genuine. The book of Alexander descendants, written in 1878, states that Rosie's mother's surname was Gardner/Gardiner. It was common for Native people to have both an English name and a tribal name. However, no primary records have been located as far as I know to prove or disprove any of either story. A few years ago, I contacted the Research Department for the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Indians. I sent them a pdf of the "Sarah" drawing and the narrative, saying that she was the daughter of a chief of the Cullapooyas/Kulapuyas, whose tribal territory was on the coast of Oregon. (There are several ways to spell that tribal name.) Anyway, the Smithsonian researcher said he was unable to make any tribal determinations about the girl in the picture. Her dress and regalia are very generic and could be any tribe. He could not attribute the artistic style of the drawing to any known artist either. And he had no information about any remnant of that tribe being present in the east, although the root of their language is in fact Algonquin. There has been no explanation as to how a tribe on the west coast would have an Algonquin language, which is an eastern tribal language. Sarah would have been born in the early 1700's if she were Rosie's mother. There is no h! istorical evidence that any member of the Oregon Cullapooyas, especially a teenage girl, traveled across this continent to the colony of Pennsylvania in the early 1700's. It isn't very logical. We need some female descendants of the various lines of the Alexander family to get Mitochondrial DNA tests and see if they show any Native genetic strain. If Sarah were Native American, all of us female descendants should have a matching strain in our Mitochondrial DNA. To my knowledge there is no further info on this issue. Maybe we'll hear from some of our other cousins who know of more recent findings. Tink Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Anna tells me that her maternal grandparents lived in Reedsville and are to be buried in the Milroy Cemetery. Her maternal grandparents' names are Glen Elliott and Mabel Grace (PHILLIPS) MATEER. Anna said that she thinks the deathdate for Glen Elliott Mateer is 3-Dec-1874 and Mabel died quite a few years later. I can tell you that it only takes one male from your Ramsey line to DNA test and in about 60 days you will narrow your search to a few Ramsey lines. We are interested in having our team help you in your Ramsey Heritage research and if you will visit our web site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ramsey/indexDNA.html. You can view our latest Ramsey DNA results by clicking on the Results Marque. At our site you can also find information about joining our Ramsey DNA Family. I can tell you through DNA testing I found immediately 2 other major Ramsey families that matched my Ramsey family and in just about 6 years now we're a group of 35 major Ramsey families. We have several Ramsay families DNA tested in England and Scotland including the Dalhousie Castle Ramsay line. I would encourage you in joining the Ramsey DNA Family!
