    1. Re: [PAMIFFLI] HARRIS IN MIFFLIN COUNTY
    2. Thank you for responding with the information. I don't think that the Harris family mentioned in your your deed is mine. I have inquired about them before and others researching the Harris surname in Mifflin County say they were of English origin whereas my line is German. I have pretty much given up on my Harris line. Family lore has it that my gggg-grandfather was a Hessian fighting for the English during the Revolutionary war and that he deserted & changed his name to Harris to avoid detection. Now how can a person search that?? It seems impossible to me that this point. My only link to Mifflin Co., PA is my ggg-grandfather's, John Henry Harris (he went by "Henry"), obituary in a Tuscarawas Co., OH newspaper & BTW, where he died, states that he was born in Mifflin County in 1804. Thank you again for being so kind as to pass on your information. Author: zulifuz Surnames: Rittenhouse, Keys Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.mifflin/3070.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Your message was gatewayed to the Mifflin Co. PA MailList. It requested a lookup in "your book," as if you were expecting a response from a particular individual. Actually, your query went out to all subscribers on the MailList without mentioning the name of a person you intended to contact. I am posting a response, just in case you posted as result of a standing offer I made some years ago to do lookups in BIOGRAPHICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JUNIATA VALLEY (2 vols); J.M. Runk (1897), a publication commonly referred to as "BEJV." Of the several surnames you mention in your query, only one of them is actually indexed in BEJV, viz. RITTENHOUSE (though the surname spelled KEYS, found incidentally within the Rittenhouse article, is most likely an alternate spelling for the KAYS surname you are researching). In volume 2, on pages 699-700, there is an article about Samuel Rittenhouse of Granville, Mifflin Co., born 9/20/1835 to Jacob & Margaret (Keys) Rittenhouse. The article states, "His paternal grandfather, Joseph Rittenhouse, a descendant of the old Rittenhouse family of Philadelphia, came to Juniata valley about the year 1810, and located at Three Locks, now Lockport, in Oliver Township. He removed to Granville township, where he engaged in farming and blacksmithing until his removal to Lewistown, when he became proprietor of 'Peacock Major's Hotel.'" The article states Samuel was first married to Rebecca Custer by whom he had seven children, who are named. It also includes that Samuel's father, Jacob! , b. 2/10/1801, was nine years old when his family moved to Mifflin Co. The entire Rittenhouse article is found on two pages and contains many names and dates that would surely be of interest to you. If you wish to obtain the entire article and cannot find BEJV in a research library within reasonable distance, you might try asking your local public library's interlibrary loan department to obtain a copy of the article for you. (From my own experience, I find that taxes pay for this public library service and there is no charge made for copying an article of this length.) Failing that, you might try contacting the nearest Mormon or LDS (i.e., Church of Jesus Christ, Latter Day Saints) church and request their assistance in obtaining a copy of the entire article from the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City UT. 3. Hello Judy, The most common spelling I have found in the Mifflin>Juniata Co. area was Pannebaker. If you are concerned with a Pannebaker (et alia spellings) family in this area before 1831, there is a very good chance it only appears from census, tax or other records that the family moved from Mifflin Co. into Juniata Co. In 1831 Juniata Co. was taken off the eastern half of Mifflin Co., so the chances are great that the family's actual location did not change but that the boundary lines changed around where they lived. I have notes on a Joseph P. Pannebaker (no dates) wed to Mary M. Wert (no dates) and according to info contributed by a descendant, Joseph P.'s parents were William and Elizabeth Pannebecker (no other info). The same informant stated that probably Joseph P. was an early resident of Patterson, Mifflin Co. This town was renamed Mifflin and is now in Juniata Co., across the Juniata River from Mifflintown. The earliest date I have, from which you can estimate earlier dates, is that of Joseph P. & Mary M. Pannebaker's son, Joseph Rickett Pannebaker, born 9/12/1838 in Juniata Co. Joseph R. wed Nancy L. Notestine and they moved to Meigs Co. OH, where they are buried in Salem Township's Davis Cemetery. If you don't find the people you seek in Juniata Co., you might do well to look for them in Meigs Co. OH. I believe I am correct in thinking that Juniata Co., from earliest days, has had a sizeable number of Dunkard, Amish and/or Mennonite families. There is a very helpful Mennonite Historical Society in Juniata Co. You may go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~pajuniat/research.html to get contact information for their very fine, small library, located near Richfield PA . Nelson R.
