A good place to work on research would be at the Juniata Mennonite Historical Center, HCR 63 Richfield, PA 17086. >From gravestones at Niemonds Cemetery, Munroe Twp., find Jeptha Giselman b. 10/31/1832 d. 6/22/1920. On 1 Jan 1867, Rev. C. G. Erlenmyer (probably Mennonite) performed service in which Jeptha was wed to Mary E. Sulouff (my 1st cousin, 4 generations removed). Regret I have spent far too little time researching this family and I have only one child listed: Elizabeth S. Giselman b. 2/17/1878 Fayette Twp. - d. 5/11/1961 Thompsontown, Juniata Co., bu. Bunkertown Cemetery. Conceivably, she could be a sister (or a first cousin) to your Alee Gesselman of Lewistown, b. 1899, and there could easily be more siblings. The 1880 census for Fayette Twp. includes Jefferson Giselman, white male, 47 yr, shoemaker. This is believed to be the same as the the above, who is clearly named Jeptha on his 1920 gravestone. I have also seen a third spelling for Jeptha's name, I think by a tax enumerator, and at this moment I cannot remember or find out what that other spelling was. It was a fairly oft-used first name beginning with a 'J,' perhaps as common as Joshua. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Great! Thanks Fred. No I haven't had a chance to check Bland yet. I trying to get caught up notes. At the moment I am trying to figure out why Frank Ebbs was shown as living with Lytle's on the 1910 census record & Beck's on the 1920 records with Gray's on the same page. There were 2 Ebbs girls Helen Gertrude & Mable Irene living with their Beck grandparents on the 1900 census records in Halfmoon. Frank's birth date matches around the birth of these Beck/Ebbs girls father Harry Gray Ebbs b. 02/28/1963 so, I guess he couldn't be an unknown missing child of Harry's then. I will have to add Wilbur to the list. Thanks for checking & the reply. 1. Re: [PAMIFFLI] Samuel Wincket Armaugh Twp, Mifflin,Pa
    2. Mifflin County
    3. I've been looking through a few old notes of *Armagh Township*, Mifflin County history that I've accumulated over the last 25+ years. They are spotty and incomplete... In 1799, David Neely is assessed for 271 acres in Armagh Township. Now here's your problem area. There is no record of Samuel Winket in Armagh Twp. from 1799 - 1807. That does not mean he isn't in Mifflin County! It only tells me where he isn't. The only way to be sure if he's in the county is to search the tax records - township by township - which can take more than a few hours. There are no known records from 1808-1810. They vanished many years ago, long before I started looking into Mifflin County history. In 1811, Samuel Winket is assessed as a SHOEMAKER for his occupation, he also owns 1 horse and 1 cow. So there's something new about him. In 1818, Samuel Winket and David Neely are both assessed in Armagh Township. The only early map of that area, that I have seen, is from 1820, unfortunately it only shows locations of fulling mills, grist mills, etc. but no households. In 1819, David Neely *heirs* are listed owning 271 acres. Robert Neely is listed owning 2 horses and 1 cow. WIDOW Neely is taxed for 1 cow. In 1820, the only NEELY listing is Robert Neely owning 300 acres, 2 horses and 2 cows. A far cry from being written out of the will, we shall see soon enough... By the way, David Neely's written Will can not be located in the Mifflin County Courthouse, but a terrific clerk did locate a copy on microfiche which she is copying for me. And here's more bad news... no obituaries are known for Mifflin County before 1822, there is no listed tombstone for David Neely, and I have not found church records for that area prior to 1830. In 1820, Samuel Winket is taxed owning 2 horses, no real estate. If Robert's mother spoke badly of Winket's she may have felt that their financial position was beneath them. It's anyone's guess.... Ernie

    1. [PAMIFFLI] Land ownership in early 1800 Pennsylvania
    2. Quick question--- What age did a man have to be before he could own land? Was it 21??? The reason I am asking is that I found a deed for my 3ggf where he purchased land in Mifflin County in 1812. His age is reported differently in later censuses, giving him a birth year of from 1791 to 1795. If he had to be 21 to own land, could I assume that the 1791 date was more likely? Thanks for any help! Lorraine lorraineq@juno.com
