Can anybody help me sort out whether two different National Archives records for Rev. War veteran William HUDELSON (or HEDLESTON) are in fact for two different citizens of Mifflin County, or if they might refer to a single person? My 3ggrandfather William HUDELSON (or HEDDLESTON) is the subject of Army File No. R5323, an application by his widow for a pension. It claims that William served six months in a unit called the "Jersey Blues," and more than six more years in the Pennsylvania Line, ending at Yorktown. It also claims that William died 11 May 1823 in Nicholas County, KY, where he had moved in 1796 from Mifflin County. His widow Ann HUDDLESTON (who was both William's wife and his cousin) was refused her pension because she had no proof of this service, and the Army couldn't independently confirm it. One HUDELSON researcher has claimed that William didn't die in 1823, but abandoned his family, married again in 1829 in Mason County, KY, and died in Ohio in Nov 1845. A William HUDDLESTON did marry that year in Mason County, but was it Ann's spouse? A separate Army file, No. W5107, records that a William HEDDLESTON and his wife Elizabeth C. received a bounty land warrant for service in the Rev. War. The National Archives has informed me that the original records for this file were destroyed in a War Department fire in 1800. The researcher mentioned above has claimed that the service record for this William HEDDLESTON was identical to that in File No. R5323, but no supporting evidence is known to have survived the fire. To confuse the issue further, there was another William HUDDLESON (or HEDDLESON) who lived in Mifflin County in the late 18th Century, and moved to Mason County, KY by 1803. On 03 Aug 1803 he and his wife Tamar (widow to John Beale), relinquished to her son her claim to land owned by her first husband in Milford Township, Mifflin County. That township now is in Juniata County. This might have been the man, not Ann's spouse, that married in 1829 in Mason County. I've been fascinated for years by this mystery, but I'm no closer to solving it. Any help would be most welcome. Dave

He married Mary Gallagher or O'Gallagher. They had 2 sons, Isaac and Ebenezer. And two daughters Phoebe and Grizell. I believe they were married around Allensville. And I believe Mary was buried around there about 1800. After her death, the rest of the family moved to Fairfield County, Ohio. I would really appreciate any help finding Mary's grave. I will be making a trip to Pennsylvania later this year, and would love to be able to see where she is buried. Has there been any DNA results on this patternal line so we can compair? I had previously found a tree listing Robert and Jannet (of Mifflin co.), with a son Archibald. Archibald married Martha and had a son Thomas b.1824 in Mercer county. (There is a town called New Lebanon there) I have been searching for the parrents of my Thomas Thompson, (supposedly b. 1821 in Lebanon) but have found no history of him ANYWERE before 1844 in Shirley twp. Huntindon county that can be proved. If you have any information that would tie my later Thomas to this family, please let me know, and feel free to contact me dirrectly by e-mail. I am inquisitive about this family because I have a Mary Riddle b. 1828 in Marysville, Rye Twp., Perry Co. (supposedly). She died in 1900 - Huntingdon County... Mary Riddle married (?Joseph?George? Emanuel McClain - b. abt 1835 Ireland and died sometime before 1880 in PA. Mary and "Mr." McClain had 6 children(that I know of)... one being Curtin Emanuel McClain b. Dec. 5, 1864 in York County, PA. And died in Croyle Twp., South Fork, Cambria Co., PA on 19 Oct 1940. Curtin's wife was OLIVE M. WILSON b. circa 1865 and died in early 1899. Olive is residing with my g.g.grandparents (Henry and Eliz. Ross GLANT) in the 1870 census, age 6 yrs. In 1880, enumerator happens to be Eliz. and Henry Glant's oldest child - John A. Glant - and Olive is said to be G.daughter! I have NEVER connected Olive to the Glant family - and there is 10 children, all that I have researched and can find NO connection. Oddly, you have RIDDLE, WILSON surnames and I do too. Let's correspond as someone has to be related to the other, somehow. Maybe she felt she used her son. She doesn't say. Robert took control of the farm by bidding for it ,after his dad died,at the sale. But he never paid his mother a dime acording to her letters to her other children. This caused much grief for her. She was living with them and moved into another child's home as she said Robert was arguing with her. Hannah has no obit here that tells anything no stone as they buried the people who died of some disease away from graveyards. I was hoping for an estate of Samuel as he may have died by 1850. What ever the date was the last census was he was in. I don't know what happened to Jessie. Perhaps there might be more to find. Hard to tell. I am gratefull for what you have found. No Winckets are listed. Civil records such as arrests, lawsuits, etc are locked in a walk-in vault at the Mifflin County Courthouse. The walls are full of volumes with no central index. Deeds and tax records are secured in similar vaults. Below is a repeat of a note I posted Feb.15, 2007 that never attached to your prior post. ====================== I've been looking through a few old notes of *Armagh Township*, Mifflin County history that I've accumulated over the last 25 years. They are spotty and incomplete... In 1799, David Neely is assessed for 271 acres in Armagh Township. Now here's your problem area. There is no record of Samuel Winket in Armagh Twp. from 1799 - 1807. That does not mean he isn't in Mifflin County! It only tells me where he isn't. The only way to be sure if he's in the county is to search the tax records - township by township - which can take more than a few hours. There are no known records from 1808-1810. They vanished many years ago, long before I started looking into Mifflin County history. In 1811, Samuel Winket is assessed as a SHOEMAKER for his occupation, he also owns 1 horse and 1 cow. So there's something new about him. In 1818, Samuel Winket and David Neely are both assessed in Armagh Township. The only early map of that area, that I have seen, is from 1820, unfortunately it only shows locations of fulling mills, grist mills, etc. but no households. In 1819, David Neely *heirs* are listed owning 271 acres. Robert Neely is listed owning 2 horses and 1 cow. WIDOW Neely is taxed for 1 cow. In 1820, the only NEELY listing is Robert Neely owning 300 acres, 2 horses and 2 cows. A far cry from being written out of the will, we shall see soon enough... By the way, David Neely's written Will can not be located in the Mifflin County Courthouse, but a terrific clerk did locate a copy on microfiche which she is copying for me. And here's more bad news... no obituaries are known for Mifflin County before 1822, there is no listed tombstone for David Neely, and I have not found church records for that area prior to 1830. In 1820, Samuel Winket is taxed owning 2 horses, no real estate. If Robert's mother spoke badly of Winket's she may have felt that their financial position was beneath them. It's anyone's guess.... Good afternoon! I am looking for information on the Jacob Yeager family. He was born ca 1821, married Ann Eliza Copley ca 1848, and had 12 children: William, Edward, Blair, Mary G., Della Gertrude, Wilson, Henry C. (or Harry), Franklin P., Anna M., Lloyd L., Robert G., and Howard S. In 1850 he was in Birmingham Borough, Huntingdon County, in 1860 in Tyrone Twp., Arch Spring Post Office, Blair County, in 1870 Warriors Mark Twp., Huntingdon County, and in 1880 in Halfmoon Twp., (Taylor), Centre County. I have information that his father was Andrew Yeager, b 1797 in PA, died 12 Apr 1841 in Potter Twp. Clinton Co, PA. He married (1) Margaret Stahl, and (2) Lydia Seyler. I have looked on Ancestry and cannot find a census for any Yeagers in Clinton County from 1810-1840. I understand that there were also Yeagers in Mifflin County. Any and all information to help me would be most appreciated. Thank you so much! Cindy in NC
Ooops - should have looked at the site first. Do you want the book put into a word processing form so it can be reprinted? I use WordPerfect exclusively, which can easily be sent in Rich Text Format and accepted by other word processing systems, such as Word. If you just want what is online transcribed, no scanning should be necessary. Jan J. L. The volunteer who was transcribing this book http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/1pa/church/chaffee/chaffee.htm has had to stop work on it, and I'm wondering if there are any good typists with free time who'd like to help get the rest of the book online. It can't be OCRed. I have a good OCR program, but the type is small and the printing in the book isn't all that great. More errors than it's worth. This is a little out of our geographic area, but a worthwhile project nonetheless. If you're interested, please email me so we can discuss the project. Thanks, Judy
