Susan, Can you reference this biographical sketch for me, please? What source? . . .and Susan, did you ever successfully download the file that Linda's been attempting to send to us? It could well be, I suppose, that the problem is on my end. I'm not sure how that could be, but with computers . . . we all know how "cranky" they can be at times. His paternal grandfather, John Gray, sr., was a native of Union county, and settled in Half Moon valley, Centre county, where he died. He was a farmer by occupation, a whig in politics, and a Methodist in religious belief and church membership. He married a Miss Hartsock and reared a family of ten children, five sons and five daughters. One of these sons was John Gray, the father of the subject of this sketch. He was born in Half Moon valley, where he grew to manhood and lived until his death, in 1855. He was an extensive farmer for his day, and owned two good farms which were well stocked and in a high state of cultivation. In 1852 he erected a foundry, which he operated until his death. He was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and a whig and republican in politics, and married Mary Mattern. Their children were: George, now deceased; Samuel, a farmer of Half Moon valley; John, a merchant of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania; Miles D. (dead); Isaac (dead); Mrs. Catherine Love (dead); Mrs. Mary Thompson (dead); Mrs. Elizabeth Ebbs; Mrs. Margaret Hutchinson, of Warrior's Mark; and Harriet Dale, of Harrisburg. Miles D. Gray was reared in Half Moon valley on a farm, and received his education in the subscription and the early free schools of his native township. He followed farming for a few years, and in 1855 he and his brother Samuel succeeded their father, at his death, in possession of his foundry, which they operated for three years under the firm name of Gray Brothers. At the end of that time, in 1858, they traded the foundry for a farm in Centre county, which land is still in possession of the Gray family. In the spring of 1879 Mr. Gray removed to Sinking valley where he followed farming until his death, in 1884. He was a republican in politics, had served Patton township, Centre county, as a school director, and had been a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years. On April 24, 1855, he married Annie E. Wilson, and to their union were born six children, four sons and two daughters: Charles W., married Emma Ray, and is a member of the mercantile firm of Reed & Gray, of Tyrone, this State; Harvey M., married Addie McFerren, and is a merchant and dealer in agricultural implements; Samuel, who died in infancy; Anna M., at home; Bertha M., wife of Melville Lever, a clerk in the railroad freight department at Tyrone; and Budd, a student of the State Agricultural college in Centre county. Mrs. Gray, after her husband's death, came to Tyrone, where she has resided ever since. She was born August 3, 1834, and is a daughter of James Wilson (see sketch of James H. Wilson for full ancestral history), who was born May 9, 1784, in Adams county, came to Sinking valley in 1807, and died January 1, 1851. He married Martha Cresswell, a daughter of Matthew and Sarah (Leonard) Cresswell, who came from Stone valley, Huntingdon county, to Sinking valley, where they reared a family of eight children. Hi, I am not researching this family, but thought I would see if I could help you find a lead. I can't tell what info you already have. Note that the spelling of the surname changed on each census I'm listing, probably the census taker's best guess on how to spell it. Daniel was already married to Mary in 1850. It is likely that she is the mother of baby Daniel who is 9 mos. old. So they probably would have gotten married by Feb 1849, at the latest, which is 18 mos prior to the date the 1850 census was recorded. On 1850 census, taken on Oct. 28th, Derry township, Mifflin Co. Beshoer, Daniel, 45, farmer, realty valued at $9,000, born PA (all in family are born in PA). Mary, 19 Michael, 18 Anna, 16 Sarah, 14 Hannah, 13 Susanna, 11, "idiot" Elizabeth, 9 Barbara, 7 Aseneth, 4 Daniel, 9/12 On 1860 census, Derry township, done on June 16, 1860, Mary is age 29 and was born in PA. (All in the house were born in PA.) Mary's birth year would be 1831. Household is: Bashoar, Dan'l, age 54, M, farmer, realty valued at $15,000, personal property valued at $3,000, born in PA. Mary, 29 Hannah, 21, in school Elizabeth, 18, in school Barbara, 16, in school Daniel, 10, in school Adaline, 8, in school James, 5 Margaret, 3 Hiram, 1 Senith (Aseneth), 12, in school Jacob Stineberger, 16, farm laborer Alfred Stineberger, 14, farm laborer Living on the farm next door with a family named Hinely, is Martha Bashoar, age 19, domestic. Probably another daughter of Daniel. On 1870 census, taken July 12th, Mary is living in Jackson township, White Co., Indiana, keeping house for her children: Bashore, Mary, 39, no realty, personal property valued at $2,500. (must be renting). James, 15, born PA Maggie, 13, in school, born PA Hiram, 11, in school, born PA Abbert, 9, in school, born PA Alice, 6, born PA (birth year 1894) William, 4, born Indiana (birth year 1896) So, she moved to Indiana between 1894 and 1896, and husband Daniel must have been alive until summer or fall of 1895, depending on son Daniel's birth month. That may help you track down a death notice. Also on the 1850 census, for Cicero, Tipton Co., Indiana, there is a Smith family that moved there from PA., and includes a daughter Mary, age 19, born in PA. A couple of her brothers have same names as two Beshoer/Bashoar/Bashore children - Hiram and William. Perhaps this could be your Mary Smith and explain why the family moved back to Indiana. This family is: Smith, Alexander, 46, farmer, realty valued at $600, born PA Catherine, 40, born PA Mary, 19, born PA, in school Sarah, 17, born IN, in school John, 16, IN, in school William, 12, IN, in school Hiram, 7, IN, in school Martha, 5, IN Maria, 3, IN Catherine, 10/12, IN I suggest you pursue records for each of the children, including newspaper clips, about birth, graduation, marriage, death, etc. They might provide more information about Mary and her extended family. Social notices often name attendees at the event and identify members present from the extended family. I hope this info will prove helpful. Good luck. Susan, The obit for Nancy Jane Knisely is in the DEMOCRATIC WATCHMAN of 10 Nov 1922. I do not have the obit . . . only the reference to it from the obit index. I can't help you with the maiden name of Eliza, w/o Jacob Schultz/Shultz. Jacob's obit is in the DEMOCRATIC WATCHMAN of 11 Aug 1899 (using the Shultz spelling in the obit index). Perhaps it would name his wife. --Fred =================================================================== In a message dated 4/16/2008 10:37:38 P.M. Obituary of Mary Maria Kagarise Ebbs wife of Emanuel Ebbs II Bellefonte Republican Nov. 13, 1884 We also record the death of Mrs. Mary M. Ebbs, which occurred on the 30th ult, at the residence of Mr. George Cornelius of this place. Deceased was born May 5, 1810, thus reaching the age of 74 years, 1 month and 25 days. She was the mother of twelve children and saw eleven of them happily married (one dying when a child). Eight of them are still living -five daughters and three sons. She had sixty-five grand-children and twenty great grand-children, twenty-six of the former and four of the latter attending her funeral, which took place on Saturday. Her remains were interred in the Ross cemetery, Rev. W. R. Whitney officiating. She was a consistent member of the M. E. church for 54 years and died triumphing in the faith that in life was her mainstay and guide, leaving to her children a bright testimony of the assurance in death of the believing Christian. She is gone, but their loss in her gain. She has only left the church militant on earth to join the church triumphant in heaven, there to sing praises to the Lamb forever. By request, we append the deceased's favorite hymn, desiring its publication for the reason that it has long ago passed from the list of orthodox hymns. FEED MY LAMBS When Christ, the Lord, was here below About the works he came to do, Before he left His little [band?] He gave to them this great command. Chorus: And oh (!?) how good it is to be blessed, And dwell where loving Jesus is. Though [fishin??] Peter __?__ the way And nothing caught till break of day, To give them food thus Jesus __________, And says to Peter "Feed my Lambs." Thomas was of a doubtful mind, Yet Jesus leaves him not behind " Thomas," he says," Behold my hands And Simon Peter Feed my Lambs Peter he once denied his Lord By not attending to his word Yet Jesus knew how frail was man And says to Peter Feed my Lambs.
