Might this rare book be, "History of that Part of the Susquehanna and Juniata Valleys Embraced in the Counties of Mifflin, Juniata, Perry, Union and Snyder.." Two volumes, published in Philadelphia in 1886? If so, can anybody identify the person or place, "Brice," mentioned on Page 785 (Vol I) , in the passage, "James Heddleston, west of Brice, was an early settler, but only warranted his one hundred and seventy-five acres May 4, 1789. This was the old George Sanderson improvement." James Heddleston was my 4g grandfather, who is listed on Page 750 of that book as an "additional name in 1772," and who sold his land in present Milford Township, Juniata County in 1796. The eventual buyer was Thomas Harris, who is listed in the Indenture as a neighbor. I'm unaware of any placename Brice in Milford Township, so I've wondered if "Brice" here might be the name of a landowner? I found that book in the Mifflin County Historical Society, but I live in North Carolina and cannot easily recheck records in Carlisle, Lewiston or Mifflintown. Any help would be appreciated. Dave

That means there's a real possibility that your John Steuart never moved "from" Cumberland into Mifflin but was situated in the portion of Cumberland that became Mifflin. You only provide a hint about the dates of your search but if John Steuart was taxed before 1789 you will want to check records of Cumberland Co., where lists of taxable inhabitants go back to 1750/51. There was an area in Mifflin County, between Strodes Mills and Ferguson Valley, where an old furnace named "Hope Furnace" was located. It could possibly be the area you are seeking. I do not not the years of furnace operation in the 1800's, but the area was large enough to have a Presbyterian Church according to old maps. The child born between 1900 and 1910 who survived (one obviously was born and died) was named Thomas also. So, Thomas Farrell was married 3 times, 1st or 2nd wife being Elizabeth (born abt 1850 in Pa) and had Zelda and probably Walter and Admiral with her. No children appear to have been born between 1885 and Morris/Maurice's birth in 1899. Last wife, whom he married abt 1897 was (presumably a widow) Mary A. E. (born July 1873 in Pa). the name of the unknown wife of his 3 wives is unknown. His parents "could" be James and Margaret (in 1860 Plymouth, Luzerne Pa census) but once back into the 1850 New Yrk censuses, there are a couple of families whose Farrel(l) parents were born in Ireland and who have a son named Thomas, born mid 1840's.
