    1. Tombstone photos
    2. Larry Allen
    3. I am looking for someone to locate two gravesites and take pictures of the tombstones of: John Allen, Revolutionary War soldier, with the old stone, foot marker, new stone and Betsy Ross flag located in the orchard of John Allen's farm, now owned by James and Andrew Stewart of McVeytown, Pennsylvania. The old stone reads "John Allen died Sept. 1805 Aged 58 yrs. For many years a resident of this Township. The new stone inscription 1747 John Allen 1805, 5th & 8th Battalions Cumberland County 1777 Militia 1782 Revolutionary War' Margaret Ann Allen located in Presbyterian Church Cemetery, McVeytown, Pennsylvania. Stone reads 'died June 25, 1845 Aged 78 yrs. 9 mo.' This inforamtion was taken from a book titled "Hahnewald - 'cock of the woods' " by Pearl Etta Turner Hanawalt. I do not have a print date for the book so the reference to the Stewarts owning the original homestead of John Allen may not be current. There was an article in "The Sentinel, Lewsitown, Pennsylvania" newspaper dated Monday June 1, 1959 regarding the new tombstone of John. Any help would be appreciated and I am willing to pay for time and expense incurred. Thank you in advance. Larry Allen 4th great grandson of John Allen

    1. Longwell, Samuel born ca 1827 - murdered C. Reed Alexander in 1883
    2. Helen Graves
    3. Can anyone identify who this Samuel Longwell was and who C. Reed Alexander was? "C. Reed Alexander, of New Armagh twp on Monday of Milroy suffered a violent death the result of a petty quarrel over a few berries. He was struck by Samuel Longwell with a fence rail. His skull was crushed in producing concussion of the brain and consequent death. Samuel Longwell was arrested. "(C. Reed) Alexander was age 41 years and married, his parents aged and feeble. Longwell is age 27 years, has always been employed as a farm hand, and has a wife and child." (Lewistown Democrat & Sentinel, July 19, 1883.) This short abstraction was published in the book, " Lewistown Democrat & Sentinel, Mifflin Co., Pa, 1875 to 1884" by Gerri L. Aitkin (pub Oct 1999). Many thanks, Helen in Calif.

    1. Alexander, Silas married Rachel Longwell
    2. Helen Graves
    3. Is there anyone on the Mifflin Co. PA list or the Longwell list who have researched the family of Silas Alexander b. 1807 (son of Robert Alexander) who married Rachel Longwell on 16 Nov. 1842? Rachel Longwell was born 3 April 1817; she was the daughter of Thomas Longwell and Margaret McClure of Mifflin Co., PA. Rachel Alexander, relict of Silas Alexander, died 11 May 1884. She was buried at the Presbyterian Church Cem., Menno Twp., Mifflin Co., PA. (Ref: two newspaper articles. See below.) I have very little info on Silas Alexander. Here's what I have. He was born 30 Sept 1807 in Mifflin Co., PA. He was the son of Robert Alexander and Elizabeth McClure. I do not know when and where he died; he died before the 1880 census was taken as Rachel is listed as being a widow, 62 years old, on the 1880 census. As far as I know, they had 3 children: 1. Thomas who became a Presbyterian minister and moved to Washington Co., PA 2. Elizabeth F. born c. 1849 3. Ada E. born c. 1855 On the Union, Mifflin Co., PA, 1880 census both daughters will single (age 31 and age 25) and living with their widowed mother. Also living with Rachel Alexander, 62, was Nancy Longwell "sister" age 58. From this, I assume that Rachel's sister Nancy was not married as of 1880. I have no further record of Nancy after 1880. It sounds like she was a spinster (still single at age 58). According to the April 7, 1881, edition of the Lewistown Democrat: "Rachel Alexander with her daughters Elizabeth and Ada have moved to Hickory, Washington Co., Pa, at which her son Rev. Thomas R. Longwell is a minister of the Presbyterian Church." May 22, 1884 edition of newspaper: "Rachel Alexander died in Belleville on May 11. May 15, 1884 edition of newspaper" "Rachel Alexander, relict of Silas Alexander, died at her home on Sunday and was buried at the Presbyterian Cemetery, Menno twp, on Tuesday." Anyone have info on when/where Silas Alexander died? Info on their daughters? Did they marry? Helen Graves

    1. LONGWELL, Walter (1782-1853)
    2. Helen Graves
    3. I've been browsing the Longwell Archives on rootsweb and came across this post made on March 11, 2001, by Susan [email protected] "I have a listing of this gentleman (Walter Longwell) from Centre Co., PA. He was 71 years, 10 mo, 15 days when he passed on. His occupation is listed as a Gentleman, was born in Cecil Co., MD, died/interred at Sinking Creek Church. Certificate date 11/28/1853." *********************************************************************************** Curious about who this Longwell was, I checked my genealogy program Family TreeMaker and came up with a likely match. Here's what I have: WALTER LONGWELL, born ca 1782 in Cecil Co., MD. He was the son of Robert Longwell and Priscilla Alexander, who was the widow of Isaac Alexander who died c. 1777. Her maiden name was also Alexander. She was the daughter of Amos Alexander of Cecil Co., MD. War of 1812 Service: a Walter Longwell served in the Maryland militia according to a deposition he made in Oct 1851 at Coalsberg, Chester Co., PA. He said he enlisted in Cecil Co., MD on March 1, 1813. Maryland records show he served from April 29 - May 6, 1813, in the rifle company of William Mackay as a lst Lt. In the same company was a Pvt John LONGWILL. This could be Walter's younger brother John, who was born c. 1790. 1813 - Walter Longwell's father Robert died in Centre Co., PA. 1817 - Walter Longwell's mother Priscilla Alexander Longwell died in Centre Co., PA. 1818 - Walter Longwell resided in Centre Co., PA. Ran a tavern. 1820 census - resided in Potter township. 1830 census - resided in Potter township. **************************************************** This is as far as I have researched Walter Longwell. I do not know have marriage information for him nor do I know the names of his children. Does anyone have access to the 1850 census of Centre Co. PA who could do a look-up on Walter Longwell ? Or any other Longwells living in Centre Co., PA in 1850? This would be VERY helpful and may solve a mystery -- "Who was 'Suicide Thomas Longwell' ? Helen Graves Lake Almanor, CA

    1. REIGHLY, Matthew's wife Susanna
    2. Helen Graves
    3. Are there any Matthew Reighly researchers on the Mifflin List? If so, was his wife Susanna CLOSE or was she Susanna MIFFLIN? I have very little info on Susanna. As for her maiden name, I have this question in my Crissman records: "was it CLOSE or was it MIFFLIN?" Nancy Reighly, born 1802, was the daughter of Matthew Reighly and Susanna (Close? Mifflin?). Nancy married Adam Crissman. According to a J.Adam Crissman genealogy (he was Adam's father), Nancy's mother Susanna was listed in the Crissman genealogy as possibly being the daughter of "General Mifflin" or "possibly she was Susanna Close". Does anyone know the ancestry of the Susanna who married Matthew Reighly? Was she a CLOSE or was she a MIFFLIN? Helen Graves

Notes for HENRY LONG: "Henry and Sarah were both from Pennsylvania. After marrying in 1854 they farmed with their eleven children in central Pennsylvania. They moved several times within Centre County the first several years of their married life. " "In 1881 Henry and Sarah decided to take their children and move West. Henry was fifty-six and Sarah was forty-eight. John did not move with his family as he was already married and his wife was expecting a child and didn't want to trave. We don't know for sure where they went that first year. We think they went to Ohio, as George did not move on with the rest of the family, but stayed on in Navarre, Ohio." "They then came to Illinois in 1883 and settled south of Cortland, ust south of where the tooway is now. There were no fences when they came and the boys had to take turns staying up through the night so the animals didn't wander. Next they moved to a farm north of Maple Park on Pleasant Street Road. Henry prospered very quickly in Maple Park and was able to buy a 320 acre farm, sight unseen, in Creighton, Nebraska. Henry then sent his oldest son, James, ahead to Creighton to settle the farm. When the family arrived in Creighton they had been tricked and there was no farm. They then settled west of Creighton and homesteaded land there." "When Henry and Sarah first moved to Creighton they had trouble with the Indians. One day when Henry was not at home, Indians came to Sarah's door and forced their way in. They took her by the ear and led her to the pantry and pointed to the coffee. She gave them some and they left her unharmed. She always said she was so glad Henry wasn't at home, because he hated the Indians so and would surely have been killed. Henry's Uncle was scalped by the Indians in Pennsylvania when Henry was a small boy and he never forgot or forgave the Indians. His Uncle lived through it and was quite disfigured. He had to wear a tin helmet the rest of his life to protect his head. That helmet is still in the family today." "The family was very happy in Creighton. In 1904 Henry and Sarah celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. All of their eleven children and sixteen grandchildren were present. It was a very happy occasion for all. It lasted five days and there was much music, laughter, and good times. This was the first time in twenty-three years that the whole family was together at the same time. They were a very musical family, all played at least one instrument and most played several. A family picture was taken that day of the entire family and one grandson Boyd. Henry and Sarah raised Boyd, who was Andrew's son. On the back of the picture Sarah recorded the names, weight, height and age in month and year." "Sarah Long was an ideal wife and Mother, her soul being in the comfort and happiness of all around her. Her life was full of good words and works. Henry farmed until they couldn't any longer and then Daniel and Susan moved in and took care of the farm. George and Katie were still living there at that time too." "Both Henry and Sarah were honest, reliable and hard working people. They had little money, but were very happy. Sarah died in 1907 at the age of seventy-four. It is said that Henry was so grieved that he died a year later of a broken heart at the age of eighty-two. Both are buried in Creighton, Nebraska."
