Family Records Before 1800 by Raymond Martin Bell I was wondering if there was anyone who had a copy of the above book? I have several family names listed in the index: HENDERSON page 55 (gggg grandfather James Henderson b 1758 ) CUNNINGHAM page 11 (ggggg grandfather William Cunningham b 1731 HUNTER page 4 (Robert Hunter b 1758) MITCHELL page 5,15,22,26,29,44,45,56.(Thomas Mitchell gggg grandfather b 1748) If there are others researching these names please write to me. Chris, There is a Sarah Magill whose will was proved 1828. Some other magills mentioned in a later period, as part of a will, no Hugh. Chris, I checked my Will book of "Wills of Mifflin County 1789-1860 Volumn 1" by Dan McClenahen and found no Rev. Hugh Magill or McGill. Greetings list, Last week I requested these 2 films (below) from the LDS. I don't even know if my ancestor is on them or if naturalized but I need to start somewhere. If anyone else's ancestor falls into these timeframes, give me the names & I'll see if I can find them also. I have not gotten notice yet that the films have arrived, hopefully within the week. Jane, Would you please check the abstracts of wills for Mifflin Co. 1789-1860 for Rev. Hugh Magill/McGill? Only if it's not too much bother for you. He died 14 September 1805. Andrea, It is kind of you to offer lookups in the films you've ordered from LDS. Hope you are not too badly swamped with requests! In 1802 my 4th great grandfather, Johannes ZULAUF, moved into Milford Twp., Mifflin Co. (now Juniata Co.) and lived there until 1838. After you receive the films you ordered and when you have time, would you kindly check for his name in the Mifflin Co. Naturalization docket 1802-1903 and the Naturalization papers 1810-1912? Variant spellings for his surname had included ZULAUFF, SULOUF, and other similar spellings in Berks Co. 1799-1792 and in York Co. 1792-1802. In one tax record his name even appears as ZULAUGH! (I figure only a Scots-Irish neighbor could have given his name that spelling!) I have been unable to find Oath Of Allegiance or Naturalization records in those counties where ZULAUF lived before moving to Mifflin Co. He lived out his life in Mifflin Co. 1802-1838. There, additional variant spellings for his surname included SULIFF and SULOFF. His surname spelling settled down to SULOUFF for the last 35 years of his life in Milford Twp., except that for both his will and estate documents the spelling ZULAUF was used. Best wishes, Rev. Good Day, Is there anyone on this mailing list that knows who I could talk to or, where to go to find a burial list for the 1. Wayne Church Cemetery, Wayne Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania 2. Ryde Cemetery, Ryde, Mifflin County,Pennsylvania. (former McKinstry Cemetery) . I own copies of both Cemetery books. AND, I have at least nine people that we can not find in these Cemeteries per no grave markers. I am going by their obits and or death certificates as well as family members who are now deceased as to where my family members are buried. Can anyone on this list help???? Kindly, Bea [email protected]
Pat, Did you look at David Samuelsen's will indexes at http://www.sampubco.com/wills/oh/ohio.htm It probably would be a good idea to check other PA counties, too. That url is http://www.sampubco.com/wills/pa/pennsylvania.htm Not all county indices are available there, but it's nice to be able to check what IS available. Judy, I have found one thing that I am SURE is true..........alot of these folks do not want to be bothered so, I have offered to pay one or two of them and, they could NOT wait to meet my husband and I to show us what we wanted to know! My Mother has a sister that died when she was very young...........Mother wanted to know what plot she was buried in and where exactly she was .......so, I sent for her death certificate ......that told me her death date and where she was buried............after hubby and I first checked out the cemetery and found nothing..........we asked a few other folks that happened to be in the cemetery if they could tell us who took care of it or if they knew who had a map of the plots...this is where the paying part came in.......(hubby was very mad to say the least that, there are people like that)....but, before my Mother died, she knew where her sister was buried and, exactly where her grave was.........you see Mother was just a child herself when her sister died and for years she looked...............Mother died two years ago and, I helped give her that. She also got to see photo's of family members she heard of but, never seen......I was very happy that I could give her that! Oh, how I love genealogy . Judy, thank you very much for all the work you do......and, I DO know you do alot.............from me to you........you are APPRECIATED ! Hi again Bea, I've been browsing around the net looking at PA funeral and cemetery regulations and found this: http://members.aol.com/Judiciary/9.html I do know that all active cemeteries are required to keep a register, card file or database of burials. They have a plot map and a record of who is buried in each plot. Take a look at the map of Oakridge: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/blair/1picts/cemeteries/oakridge/oakridge-map.jpg You can see that each section and lot are coded, and the sexton (gravedigger) of the cemetery has those records available when there is a new interment scheduled. At each cemetery there are regulations about how many adults may be buried in a single lot. In many cemeteries, provision is made for burials at 6' and 12'. In the specific case of Wayne cemetery, have you called the church and asked about their records? It may be the case that the MCHS Cemeteries of Mifflin County book was prepared from a reading of the extant tombstones and not from the records kept by the Methodist church. I don't own the book, so I don't know if the preface lists the sources used in preparation of the book. Perhaps somebody else who owns the book could check it for that information. Not sure I've answered your question or even that there's a definitive answer to your question. Bea-- The fact is, in many, many cases, cemeteries a long time ago didn't keep records, the records have been lost, or the records have been destroyed by fire, flood, etc., etc. It's simply a reality. Here's how they know if someone is buried there (or remains are present): they can probe a plot with a rod, or (the more technical solution) do ground-penetrating radar to show if the ground has been disturbed. An old city-owned and -maintained cemetery in my county has recently done the latter to verify which plots are available for sale. It knew its records were in poor shape. And in Teller County, the two largest cemeteries aren't owned by anyone or any entity. If you want to bury someone, you have a hole dug and bury him. No plots are sold. I assume they look for non-depressed ground and do a probe when deciding where to bury someone. Judy, I am in speaking of many many cemeteries..........I have searched my books through and through...........my pet gripe is this...... When one does not hae a grave marker on their grave (for many reasons) how can you find them? I have been told bt several cemeteries that there is not a record kept or they can not find where one is buried.............NOW, how do they know where to bury the ones that pass away and , where not to bury them..... Someone has to know what plots are occupied and which are not........wouldn't you think ? I am speaking about all cemeteries........no one seems to be able to answer this.......maybe I am not asking it in the right manner??? Bea, Have you tried checking with the library in Lewistown? They may have some idea in which direction to point you in order to find these records. You also might try calling City Hall. The sad thing is sometimes those old records are just lost. We have an old cemetery in our area that has a lot of unmarked graves and those records have been lost for years. I'm sorry I don't live in that area of the country so I can't be of much help. In 1976 there was a book (two vols.- 1500+pages) published listing persons buried in each of the cemeteries in Mifflin County, the location of the cemetery and who is the caretaker. I found the book at the National Genealogical Society library, which has now moved to St. Louis. I feel certain that there must be a copy in the Mifflin County Historical Society library in Lewistown. Because of copyright laws and the no. of pages, I did not make a copy of the book.
