Yes but--- Is it not better that the list was at least started? These are usually done on a volunteer basis. If there were a law, it would cost someone something, I think. J. Bea - Heard the old addage "There oughta be a law"? I live in Indiana and used to be the head of the Genealogy Department at a small library. I have been following genealogy mailing lists (such as this one for Mifflin County) since about 1997, and the one thing I am sure of is that there must not be any laws concerning this situation. Compounding that situation is what I have termed "The Rush To Publish" syndrome. This concerns those lists that various people and/or associations compile by going to the cemeteries and reading the stones. I have found that in many cases, the stones are read once (somewhere in this string of messages the year 1974 was mentioned, in my county the year seems to have been 1969.) and then never updated. And if that person who read the stone was solely interested in getting his/her name in print as the "author", accuracy was generally not a consideration. I talked the local genealogy society and tried to get each member to "adopt" a local cemetery and then keep that list updated, and to make a diagram of where the graves were actually located in the cemetery. That idea was poo-pooed by the members as unnecessary. I tried to lead by example and so I "adopted" a cemetery. The very first stone (not the 20th or 197th) but the first stone I read was spelled wrong in the list for that cemetery. In Indiana, the maintenance of unclaimed cemeteries is in the hands of each Township Trustee, and most of them consider the upkeep as an unnecessary evil and do as little as possible towards that end. Hi Karen, MyFamily.com, which owns Ancestry.com and Genealogy.com, provides free web space to RootsWeb. USGenWeb is in turn given free web space by RootsWeb, but IS NOT RootsWeb. In fact, USGenWeb county sites can be hosted on any server. If you run your mouse down the county list on the main PAGenWeb page, you'll see an assortment of webhosts being used: http://www.pagenweb.org/ The Archives project, the FGS project, etc. are all special projects of USGenWeb. The Archives is a transcribed document depository, and the other projects were created to make it easier for somebody wanting to look at a specific kind of record across a whole state, to do that from one place on the net. The USGenWeb official bylaws govern the special projects. Here's what the rule is about them: Section 3. In The USGenWeb Project, copyright to data contributed to any special projects resides with the contributor, who agrees that The USGenWeb Project, as a not-for-profit group, has permanent use of the data. The permanent use agreement is conditional upon the non-profit nature of The USGenWeb Project and will become null and void if The USGenWeb Project should ever cease to be non-profit. If you'd like to read all the bylaws, they're on this page: http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/bylaws.shtml Judy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen McKellar" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 18, 2005 2:48 PM Subject: Re: [PAMIFFLI] Family Records Before 1800 by Raymond Martin Bell Hi Judy, I just went to the FGS speical project and looked at several different states. Jerry, I have a Fianna M. Hetrick born about 1864 in Greenwood Township, Juniata County. Her parents were John and Hannah Hetrick. Fianna married Charles C. Troup, which is my line. Their marriage license was #2048 according to LDS film #0021996, Perry County Marriages. They were living in Oliver Township at the time of their marriage. Fianna died about 1945 and is buried in Newport, Perry County with her husband. Most my information came from their marriage license and from Fianna's obituary. I have no further information on your Hetrick line, but thought this may add to your family genealogy. Jan Cortez is the PA Tombstone Project coordinator, and she can be reached at Cortez, Jan E-mail Address(es): [email protected] I can understand how the error happened. You should see me zooming in on the ol' Oakridge Altoona tombstone photos, trying to decipher the dates. The PA Tombstone Project, like the Archives, is a special project of USGenWeb and is featured on the USGenWeb home page presently because it made the news. http://www.usgenweb.org/ If you click on this link it will take you to the special projects page http://www.usgenweb.org/projects/index.shtml For those of you who haven't contributed to the Family Group Sheet project yet, I'd encourage you to do so. We can't put FGSs in the Archives, for one thing, and for another, for those of you who don't want your whole gedcom online, this is a way to put a single family or families of a single line online. These FGSs make excellent "cousin-fishing bait." Judy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nelson R. You appear to be plugged in as a knowledgeable person about the Pa. Tombstone Transcription Project. So my question is: Do you know if it is possible to correct errors posted on the Webpage for Old Church Hill Cemetery, Juniata Co. published at http://www.rootsweb.com/~pajuniat/oldhilju.htm , and if so, whom to contact? There is a transcription error of five years on age at death for one of my 4th great aunts. A '43' on the gravestone was misread as '48.' Nelson R. Hi Bea, I just listed the information I have collected from other sourses. The information in ( ) is not from the Family Records Book. I would like to know what the Family Record Book says.
