    3. There was a Diffenderfer married into one of my lines, and he lived in Altoona for a while, but his name was Henry. I traced the family a bit just out of curiosity and to help a distant cousin, and found that most of the Diffenderfers (spelled an extraordinary number of ways!) were from Lehigh county. You might want to post your info to the Lehigh list, too, if nobody subbed to the Mifflin list can identify the family. 2. Does Newton Hamilton have any sort of historical society of its own? I attended their Sesquicentennial celebration in the early 1990s and remember a nice historical display in an old schoolhouse. They had fantastic old photographs. I don't know if the display was permament or just for the celebration. Angela

    3. Good Afternoon, In The Cemeteries of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, a twol volume book published by the Mifflin County Historical Society and printed by Grove Printing Co., State College, for the Newton Hamilton Memorial Cemetery there is one Taylor grave listed It is C11 in Section B. Only the name Taylor was readable in 1977 when the book was published. There is no listing of a Taylor in the Meth. Cem. I found the book at the National Genealogical Society library when it was in Arlington, VA. It has since moved to St. Louis. I would think that the Mifflin County His. Soc. would have a copy but can't remember if I asked about it or not. I found the ladies at the Hist. Soc. very helpful if you want to try them. Maybe we can get some new blood intersted and bring this town and Mifflin county out of the past. There are cemeteries in Mifflin county that lie in ruins not marked, plowed over or stones stolen - inexcusable in todays world. No one sems to care. Researching Mifflin County isn't easy. 3. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ronald A Mockenhaupt" <[email protected]> To: "PAMIFFLI-L" <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, January 30, 2005 9:40 AM Subject: {not a subscriber} John W. WILSON born about 1836 probably in Mifflin County area near Jacks Creek Seeking information on John W. Wilson who was born about 1836 in Pennsylvania. He wrote a letter to his sister mentioning Jack's Creek. Since the letter ended up in my family, I'm assuming that someone in my family was his sister, but I haven't come up with a Wilson on any of my family lines yet. John W. Wilson was well-read. He went as a surveyor to Ohio about the age of 16 and was married in Defiance County on 2 May 1852 to Elizabeth Woodcox, daughter of George B. Woodcox and Luranah Mulligan. His letter mentioned an aunt Martha and an Aunt Mary. He served during the Civil War in Co. E. 14th Regt. OH and was promoted from Captain to Major 12 March 1863. His regiment acted as Provost Guard of Gallatin TN and he died of wounds received during the Georgia Campaign 3 October 1864. He was injured severely and died during an amputation attempt. He died leaving 6 children, one of which died in 1865. His wife died 14 January 1866. I do not know what happened to the other 5 childre! n. They were: Lawrence Perry Wilson, b. 8 Mar 1853, Bruce Lorenzo Wilson, b. 7 Oct 1854, Mary Elmira Wilson, b. 16 Aug 1857, Laura Lorilla Wilson b. 24 May 1862 and her twin Viola Vista Wilson, and Dortha Alice Wilson who died before her 1st birthday b. 16 Oct 1864 died 6 Aug 1865. He was an intelligent man as you can tell from his letters, thoughtful and I would love to learn more of his family history to try to make some connections. Would appreciate any and all assistance. Family names that he may have some connection to (according to the family who had the letter): Hartley, Kauffman, Marshman (Mashman), Cupples, Miller, Russell, Swigart, Alward, McBride....but there may be others.

    3. All info from censuses: 1910 Conplanter, Venango, Pa census Benjamin F. Lepley Sarah A. married 24 years and 8 children, all living Alice M. Thomas J. Mildred W. Lydia A. Atta (?daughter), born May 1887 Alice, born Feb. 1889 Thomas J., born Aug 1890 Mildred, born Aug 1894 Lydia, born May, 1897 unnamed daughter (obviously Dorothy), born Jan, 1900 ______________________ 1880 Canal, Venango, Pa census Anthony Lepley, 52, born in Pa of Pa-born paretns Lucinda, 37, born Pa and looks like her father was born in Con. and her mother in York State? Addie, 14 (Sarah was obviously enumerated twice, once as Sarah at her place of work. This 'double enumeration' happened all the time and still does!) Leonard, 7 Mary, 5 unnamed son, born May, 1880 1880 Jackson, Venango, Pa census finds Benjamin Franklin Rodgers with his parents Thomas and Eliza. ______________________ 1870 Canal, Venango, Pa census Anthony Lepley, 35 Lucinda, 26 Franklin, 9 Sarah, 4 (called Addie in the 1880 census) 1870 Jackson Venango census finds Franklin, age 8, with his parents Thomas and Louis Rodgers. _______________________ 1860 Wayne, Crawford, Pa census Sarah Lepley (widow of Anthony Sr.- nicknamed Sally (Womer), age 66 Michael, 17 Anthony, 31 1860 Jackson, Venango, Pa census finds Thomas and Eliza Rodgers with their family - BF Rodgers not yet born. Note, in every other census Eliza is called Eliza - I think the census-taker misheard the name in 1870 and put down Louisa) ____________________ 1850 Meadville, Crawford, Pa census Anathony Lepley Sr., 62 Sally, 45 amongst their children enumerated with them is son Anthony Jr., age 23 1850 Sugarcreek, Venango, Pa census finds Thomas and Eliza Rodgers, presumably living immediately next door to his parents James and Eliza (Foster) Rodgers. James Rodgers seems to be the son of John D. Rodgers who was born about 1765 in Ireland and died 1843 in Venango, Pa. ________________________ Don't count too much on the ages given in the various censuses. They are very often all over the place - although as they get on in years, the people seem to become a little more truthful about how old they are!! Hope this all helps, Sue
