> Can someone tell me why our local Historical Society is not open in the > evenings ? > I believe this is a recurring problem whenever genealogical research materials are housed remotely from a public library. Many years ago we had a similar problem -- A town of about 35,000, beautiful library and a beautiful center for the arts where the Historical Society had a lovely room. Problem was that the materials were seldom available for use even by our members. We finally persuaded the powers-that-be to move the general genealogical materials (reference books) to the library. The collection has grown immensely and the number of volunteers increased significantly. We moved from that community about 13 years ago but when going back I have talked with a number of people and they tell me I should go check out the library for all the new materials that both the library and the members of donated. Now, I have the same situation here in the village where I live. The Museum has a wonderful collection (I have been told -- never been there because of the limited hours they are open) and the library is new with lots of space. I will be donating my extensive collection of materials (over 30 years worth) with some very valuable rare books when we finally move from our home to a retirement place, but I will be sure to select a place where they will be accessible to those who will benefit from them. I would hope that the rare books are digitally imaged for use. Karen
Good Day Fellow Mifflin Countians, I do not live in Mifflin County, however, my guess would be it is not open evenings and weekends because there are no volunteers to staff the library, or that the court house building is closed for all business. Why not volunteer to staff the library one evening a month if the building is open? That way you can, perhaps, work on your own research and at the same time give the opportunity for someone else to also research. I found the ladies the day I visited the society to be very helpful and courteous. Karen, I own alot of the books that they have in the Historical Society and have had MANY ask for my help and, I have helped. I love genealogy ! At the present my Daughter in law works ALL day time hours at one of our local Dr's offices.....she is doing her family (just started) I have given her my books to use so that she can do some look ups in the evenings......I also have told her once she gets dates there is nothing like getting a list ready put all dates down and then going to the Historical Society to gather up her verification.......again, she works ALL daylight Monday - Friday.......... Most of the HS I have used for my research have retired persons volunteering and they just do it during the day time. Also there may not be enough interest to keep them open evenings. Maybe we could take a survey and see how many would be interested in having it open one or two evenings and would YOU volunteer to be there one of those evenings? If we got enough interest, maybe we could also get enough people so that everyone would only have to volunteer one night a month or less. > > > --------------------------------- > Do you Yahoo!? > Yahoo! Donna, Hubby and I were in the Historical Society today................I didn't take my notes because I was doing hubby's....this is the first I have been there for a few weeks.........had my Grandbaby ALOT.......... NOW.....they have a book on the County Home...........hubby wanted to look up his Great Great Grandfather and, he found him. And, I THINK I found my Elizabeth Wilson/Bolinger as well (there...hummmmmmm....) Not sure though....we are going to find some original records..........that should be fun ! I do have a copy of the burials there ............I checked an your name or Hubby's is not listed.....but, if they were buried there more than likely they had little money and could not afford a stone......unless another family member helped in getting one for them ! The book at the Historical Society has ALOT of names in it....
