There was a William Cummins, son of David & Catherine F. Cummins, who fought with the 1st. Pa. Rifles. On digging deeper though, I found that he died on Sept. 14,1862 at the battle of South Mountain. He is buried in Church Hill cemetery (Brown Twp) here in Mifflin County, Pa. and his age at death was 18 years- 11 months - 5 days. A stronger possibility is with: "Col. William Cummins, died at age 68 years in Brown Township, Mifflin County, on April 1", (*1865. The newspaper was dated April 12, 1865.* That's all I could find on the name William, but there are still people living here with that surname, and several older tombstones. Do you know who his children where? *E*
Pat, Thanks for your reply. I do not know have any Elizabeth's or David's in my research yet, so I do not know if there is a relation. Bea, Thanks for your reply and your kind offer. Thomas Alvin Reed was born May 1, 1857 in Lewistown, PA. His parents were John S. (born abt 1815) and Elizabeth M. (born abt 1816). John is listed in the 1870 Census as a farmer. The other members of the household on the 1870 Derry, Mifflin Census were: Edmund (born abt 1852) Nathan (born abt 1854) Susan (born abt 1844) Ada A. (born abt 1858) Laura (born abt 1860) Emma R. (born abt 1865) That is all that I know. There is a John Reed listed on Censuses prior to 1870, but I do not know if it is him because they only listed the "Head of Household" on those Censuses. Thomas Alvin Reed emigrated to the Chicago area in the late 1800s for work at the Chicago World's Fair. I would greatly appreciated if you would forward information to me about anything that you might find. Sharon, I do not know if this information has any connection to your REED line. I have an Elizabeth Reed born 25 April 1808. I'm not sure which county in central Pennsylvania was her birth place. Around 1840 she married Henry TROUP and they had 4 children. Her fathers name was David Reed and her mothers first name was Jane. I have a copy of David Reed's Will which lists his children. There were 8 children but I do not show a John. David is buried in St. James Lutheran Church yard in Greenwood Township, Juniata County. There is no listing for him in 1847, or 1848. He first shows up in Brown Twp, Mifflin County in the triennial assessment of 1849 as a tenant on the property of Abner Thompson. In 1850, the landlord is not listed but William is still listed as a tenant. In 1851 and 1852, he is a tenant, owns one cow, and his occupation is "laborer". I searched all the original tax books for all townships in Mifflin County and he is not listed again anywhere after 1852. Mrs. Briggs is not listed in the tax books either, even though she is in the 1860 census Aquillas Cornelius first shows up in 1867, residing with a Chriswell family, as a tenant. 1868 & 1869 show Aquillas Cornelius in the West Ward of Lewistown, residing with Mrs. Briggs. (*This is the first mention of her in the tax records) In 1870, the West Ward listing is as follows: tenant = Briggs, Aquillas residing with his wife. (*this is how it is in the book) 1871 = tenant, Aquillas Cornelius residing with Mrs. Briggs. 1872 = neither Aquillas, or Mrs. Briggs are in any township in Mifflin County. Interestly, the Cornelius family was found as early as 1837 in Wayne Twp, Mifflin County. I could only find one other Briggs from 1853-1859 and that was a "singleman" named Levy living in Bratton Twp., his residence was simply "mountain". Sorry, I couldn't be of more help. *E*
