    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AcB.2ACE/1596 Message Board Post: Hello Everyone, This query is about William R. Lilley who was born about 1794 in PA. and died about 1880 in PA. He married a woman by the name of Catherine Pownell. Does any one know anything about this couple and their lineage back? Nancy Jane Lilley was their daughter who married our Charles C. Spottswood in about 1848 in PA. Would also like to know about the Teeters (surname). We have a card file that the Mifflin Co. Genealogical Society sent us, but no other information. We can pin-point Charles and Nancy in Mifflin Co. and a few other places, but can't come up with a father for William R. Lilley or Catherine Pownell nor a marriage date or death dates. Also we have a John Lilley who might be the son of a Samuel Lilley who might be the cousin, father, or brother of our William seeing as how he married Nancy and Charles in the Methodist Church in Lilleyville, PA. So if anyone knows anything about this please contact us. We are still trying to come up with the father of our Charles Spottswood too. We have a family Bible that states it is a John, but we can't seem to match any of them up with the criteria that we have on him. We also know that Charles was raised by the Joseph Miller Cogley family. Charles was born on Nov. 11, 1823 in Gettysburg, PA and died in Dec. 1910 in Farmington, Dakota Co. MN. Thanks for the help in advance, Bill

    3. In the 1880 Barree, Huntingdon, Pa census is a Leonard, Rudy, age 45. Living with Rudy are sister Nancy Rudy, 52 niece mary J. Rudy, 9 niece Araminta Rudy, 7 ****niece Grace Yarnel, age 4 mos (shows that she was born in January) and transcribed as Grace Garnel**** nephew Samuel Selfridge, 24 daughter, Effie M. Rudy, 2 In the 1900 Barree census, Grace is living with her widowed grandmother, Elizabeth Shank who says that she was born in January of 1835, her grand-daughter Grace says that she was born in January of 1881. In this census Elizabeth says that she is a widow, but in the 1880 census, she says that she is divorced. I think your Grace must be a niece of this Leonard Rudy. Perhaps if you can find out who his sisters married, you might find the missing Yarnel(l).

Up until then, we all believed that David GARRETT (Brother & son of the GARRETT info you've sent) was dead as his wife, Catherine LONG, was listed as a widow in the 1880 Census. From this obit we realized that he had fought in the Civil War, which gave us the fact that he was from Centre Co. & Catherine's maiden name of LONG. THEN we discovered a will in which he left his sister-in-law, Rebecca Gill, wife of Charles GARRETT, of Mifflin County, $50.00. Mifflin County??? Was I confused! From that I was able to get info from the census ...found the family 1840 in Centre, 1850 just across the line in Clinton Co., 1860 back in Centre, 1870-80 the whole family was in Mifflin Co. *E*, perhaps you can help me with something I just don't understand. David GARRETT, b. 1837 in Centre Co. (Charles & Phoebe parents, John H., brother) for some reason, traveled all the way east to Mauch Chunk, Northampton Co., met & married Catherine LONG there & immediately left to fight in the Civil War. (now Jim Thorpe, Carbon Co.) His brothers remained in Centre/Mifflin and were also in the Civil War. I also noticed the proximity of LONG families in Centre Co. It was wild back then. Why would a young man go that far East? Was there a lot of that? It's puzzled me. Thanks again, Sandy

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AcB.2ACE/1510.3.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Sandy, I'm glad to be of help to you. As much as I wish there were better obituaries from that time period, what I posted from the Lewistown True Democrat newspaper was the extent of an obit. There is no where else to look for a more complete obituary. In the 1800's, unless you were extremely well off, or well-known, or died from an extreme circumstance, what you read from the paper (about 1-2 lines) is all that there would be of your death. Many people I research didn't even get a 1 line mention of their passing, nothing at all...Not much to show for a lifetime... just doesn't seem fair. I did look for other items and found these "bits" from the Lewistown True Democrat newspaper. I copied these as they are, some Garrett's have 1T, some have 2T's... (* are my notes to you) "Garret, John C.of Vinton County,Ohio, married Fanny S. McManigal of Milroy, on Jan.27,1859 by Rev. J. W. White" .newspaper dated Feb.3,1859...(* Milroy is in Armagh Twp, Mifflin County) "Garret, John H., of Derry Twp (*Mifflin County), to Rebecca Gill of Mill Creek, Huntingdon County,on Oct.11, by Rev. M L Smith" .newspaper dated Nov.7, 1866 "Garrett, John S. to Mary E. Peters both of this borough* on Dec.25, by Rev.Monroe" .newspaper dated Jan.1,1868 (*borough not identified, but I interpret this as Lewistown Borough) "Garrett, Samuel Henry, son of John S. and Mary E. Garrett, age 4years,16 days, died in Lewistown on January 16" .newspaper dated Jan.30,1873 I wasn't surprised at the different birth dates, as accuracy seems to fade the further you go back in time. Unless you can find the church records for births (and even they can be wrongly transcribed or translated), it's all dependent on someone's memory. I hope these new "bits" are of some help to you. I know it isn't much , but I have dealt with less to go back my lines. If I see anything else that belongs to Garrett, I'll send it along. *E*

Thank you for this. It's interesting that both of their gravestones are incorrect. For Charles GARRETT, his gravestone has his birthdate as 1808, the census records indicate 1813-1815 and the death notice makes it 1811. Phoebe is just as bad. Her gravestone says she was born 1810, the census records indicate 1817-1820 and the death notice makes it 1817. Luckily, their names aren't too common and they are the only Charles & Phoebe Garrett in Mifflin County other than their son. This could (and does at times) make a person nuts! Do you know if it's possible and how I can check to see if there was an obituary? Again, thanks so much. Sandy Lewis

    3. Forgot to add that in the 1900 West Virginia census, enumerated with Haldane and his wife Rachel, is Haldane's nephew Howard J. Reed, born May, 1892 in Pa.. As what appear to be Howard Reed's 2 sisters (Pearl and Susanna Reed who are enumerated in 1900 in Parker, Armstrong, Pa with their grandmother Susanna Cummins, William's widow), I suspect that Haldane's sister married a Reed and she has died by 1900 - The sister must have been either Laura (Ella) or Blanche.

    3. Your William A. By the 1870 Marion, Butler, Pa census Ellen is a 55-yr-old widow, living next door to her son Joseph and his wife Ella. Living with her are her 3 youngest children plus JOhn and Lysander. The 1860 Venango, Butler census has William A. Cummins now married and with a son Wm. Cummins, born Sep, 1862 in Pa of Pa-born parents Rachel, wife, born August, 1867 in Canada of parents both born in Scotland. Rachel says that she has had 3 children but that just the 2 survive and she says that she and Haldane have been married 13 years (1887?) His roots seem to be in Butler county and his father must be buried in Marion twp, Butler county, Pa which is where he was last enumerated in 1860 and his widow was still there in 1870.
